JAR JAR BINKS: Bounty Hunter (fanmade JarJar "redemption" comic)

AS long as he has thatd esign, he can never be the character George wanted him to be.

The color, the eyes, the skin, the shape of the face... everything about JAr Jar is unsettling to the eyes of a child. His design is more comparable to sebulba than anyone else, and he was supposed to be a villain.

I would go so far as to say he had literal actual brain damage, and since had a medical treatment to have it resolved...

 

The original design, I actually think the original design better fits the context you are putting Jar Jar in.

Serpentine eyes, spiked parts ofthe eyelid, mottled gross skin, elongated face... just doesnt fit being "goofy sidekick kidfriendly character"

For him they also addedthe facial tendrils. Which seemsto be the go-to move for making gungans less silly, I guess that Captain Tarpals resonated a bit stronger with the audience (perhaps because he was the first character to show real open disdain for Jar Jar?)

 

dont worry too much about getting the design accurate... just do your own thing, and dont worry about all the things I am saying. I just like discussing aliens and design because I am a science fiction writer and artist.

 

If you want the best gungan art and depictions, I would recommend "The Wildlife of Star Wars"

Terryl Whitlatch did the art, and she was absolutely brilliant, I believe she actually did a lot of concept art for The Phantom Menace.... I think she was behind the gungans and Sebulba actually.

I saw some of her concept art for Jar Jar, and I definitly think that something was lost in translation from art to CGI.



Less serpentine eyes, nose a bit more like you draw... he almost feels more innocent, and seems to have a more... Farnsworht-esque (Futurama) feel to him... the blue coloring around his eyes makes him seem tired too, and somehow makes him look a little more sympathetic perhaps? less thick ears, less pointy parts. Here is another piece of art she did.



Gungans are a fascinating and weird species to study for so many reasons, there is so much about the design that didnt work, but could work... so many little things just... slightly off.

 

I dont know if a good or better design would have redeemed the writing, but it couldnt have hurt too much.

I kinda like the idea of your grittier design, but blue coloring around the eyes could help even with a gritty design. As I said they make him look a bit tired, and thus more sympathetic...

and I imagine a JarJar taht has been carryingthe burden of all the things he has done, does not get much sleep.

 

That one is also good, tagain it doesnt have the elongated serpentine pupil that made jar jars eyes unsettling.

The coloring seems almost reminiscent of a south american poison dart frog of some sorts, I dont know if that would have turned out but even that I like more than what we got in the film.

 

Cool drawings and funky story my friend yet I think you're a little late on the ''making Jar Jar cool'' department. If all goes as planned, JJ Abrams said he was going to include Jar Jar's bones in Jakku. I think there will be a great disturbance in the Force as millions of souls cry out in sheer joy on Dec 18 and think that nobody can make Binks any cooler than that!

I love most aquatic races from SW and it really saddens me that Jar Jar was made to be a dork because Gungans are a really cool race and I love their design. I wonder how PM would have worked if instead of an idiot, Jar Jar would have looked exactly the same but would have acted more in the lines of Chewie. Even Boss Nass was made to act goofy when I think he's a very cool looking frog type of alien that barely resembles a Gungan. Gungans could have been great aditions to the SW mythos but saddly just the mention of the name alone instantly brings Jar Jar to mind and make many fans wish they had never existed.
