No, he's not. Padme Amidala, the Galactic Senate, Chancellor Valorum, the Trade Federation, the Jedi Order, Count Dooku, Darth Maul and Anakin Skywalker also played major roles in Palpatine's rise. Especially the Galactic Senate.

I hope you were making a joke. If not, this accusation against Jar-Jar is becoming old and is still wrong.

As for annoying characters - at different times, I found R2-D2, C3-PO, Han Solo, the Ewoks and Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren also annoying.

you can't say he's in any jokes, did you notice that? they're just being mean, but don't get that, because... they don't like kids?
but he's not, in, any jokes.

I have to admit, that as the small boy i was at the time I enjoyed Jar Jar as well as the Prequels in general.
I understand that people dont like them but they will always have a special place in my heart for being some of hte first movies i saw in cinema.

I love Jar Jar, because when he appears on screen, I look at my son's face.
And the smile I see on my son's face makes me think : Jar Jar reached his role.

    No more, no less.

Honestly--unpopular opinion here--I don't think Jar Jar is inherently that awful. I think the main problem is that he's in a bad movie (I admit this even though I enjoy the film) and he's given a lot of terrible gags. But the character itself, if put in different situations (read: situations with exactly 100% less fart jokes) wouldn't be that bad.

I really try to tune him out and not let it hinder my viewing, but it's hard. They've been showing the first 2 trilogies on tnt this and last weekend, and even though the prequels don't measure up to the originals, they're still better than most garbage on tv at any given time. I've seen the first 15 min of TPM far less than the rest of it, and I was unfortunately reminded yesterday how jar jar had just shown up, and barely into his dialogue we get a cringe worthy "ex squeeze me". I can live with that phrase in Wayne's world, but it has no place in star wars. Gungan basic is unbearable. Meesa, youssa, bombad, mui, the list goes on. He's for kids, I get it, but I didn't turn 1 until about 5 months after ANH, came out, and I think I was 5 for Empire, which I believe was just after I saw ANH being old enough to remember I had. I loved all of it, and didn't need any more kid stuff. R2, 3p0, jawas, all filled that role without repelling adults. I know some people, usually older than me (I'm 41) can't stand ewoks, and maybe I'd be a little annoyed with them had I been older when first introduced to them, and maybe not. But jar jar isn't even in the same league. He's completely absurd, way too over the top for anyone that's over 10. I think the fact that he's one of the first characters we meet in the trilogy doesn't help him. It sets a bad tone, like "uh oh, I don't think this is gonna be what we're used to". The alien voices in the prequels are just awful. They all sound like some horrible caricature. They managed to put voices on greedo, jabba, bib fortuna, etc in the OT without the same problem. I know there's a lot of criticism that the voices sound like racial stereotypes, and I don't buy into that. I don't think they sound like they're mocking any particular races, I think that's just the PC police on a witch hunt, but there's no doubt they sound ridiculous, and jar jar managed to still be the worst, with boss nas a close 2nd. As bad as he is, I won't let it keep me from enjoying the movies anyway, because fortunately there's still plenty of cool stuff to help balance out the bad (much more than just jar jar).

As a kid of the OTs and in my early 20s with the PTs came out, he was just way too young for me. Felt Lucas for forcing him down our throat. Would have appreciated him a lot more if he was a background character, which he became in AotC and RotS.

I couldn't stand Jar Jar, but I am rewatching all the PT with my daughter and we are both enjoying them and him. Don't get me wrong, I still can say I like him, but I don't "hate" him anymore.

I think it depends on the age you were when TPM came out. Definitely those of us who grew up with the OT (I was 28 when TPM came out) found him to be annoying. The voice, the stupid jokes, etc. Having said that, I knew many adults in the 1970s who found 3PO to be annoying.

I just think that, had Lucas used either a different voice, or even had him speak Gungun and simply used subtitles (as he did with Jaba) then he wouldn't be sooo hated. But he seems to be the poster boy for the PT, which is widely criticized as being crap, so he takes the beating.

I understand the hatred of him from people who grew up with the OT era, but honestly as someone who grew up with the Prequels -- I didn't mind Jar Jar as a kid and still don't. I actually like him, and think his Clone Wars episodes are entertaining also.

I think the fate Disney gave him is really a slap in the face to George Lucas. His fate is him on Naboo, street performing for kids while everyone else bullies him because he's only remembered for accidentally helping The Emperor get control.

The point of Jar Jar in the Phantom Menace is comedy relief(failed) but also acceptance. Jar Jar goes from an outcast who's banished by his own people and despised -- to someone loved by his own people because it just so happens the one guy they excluded, Jar Jar, is the guy who bridged the Gungans and the Naboo. Acceptance.

And then Disney ruins it because Jar Jar is once again excluded from his own Gungan people, and even worse now the Naboo humans hate him. And he goes from being viewed as a failed comedic act by the audience, to literally being a failed comedic act in-universe. Like really?

Even JJ Abrams joked about having Jar Jar Binks' bones discovered in TFA. The hatred for Jar Jar is understandable, but I think the whole backlash that continues to this day is more about the disdain for the prequels as a whole -- and Jar Jar is used as the go-to to hate on, even though he's a minor role in Ep2 and a background character in Ep3.

Let me put it this way -

When a hover tank hits you right in the nuts you'd probably surrender - probably in a high pitched voice, too. But not Jar Jar! He juggled boomba grenades into battle while riding his nuts on an enemy tank because real heroes don't go for none of that "safety first when transporting hand grenades" crap.

I'm not sure the enemy hover tank was even worthy to carry Jar Jar's balls into battle. He probably deserved a Star Destroyer - wait! Two Star Destroyers, one for each nut! Cause that's how heroes roll, ya know?

And he body slammed a battle droid while shooting another with his foot! And that foot was still up the ass of the battle droid holding the blaster! You know you're tough when you kick your enemy's ass so hard that he pretends he's dead and starts firing on his own team rather than tempt you to go another round with him.

When Jar Jar said "My give up" the battle droids instantly shut down. Now you might think it was because the droid control ship got fragged, but I suggest that was just clever movie editing. What actually happened is the droids heard Almighty Jar Jar order them to "Give up!" and they promptly surrendered. And why not? He'd already unleashed a wagon full of boombas - big boombas - against their ranks. And the droid army knew if Jar Jar could take a tank to the nuts and turn that tank into his personal chariot they had nothing else to throw at him.

I think you missed the point of Jar Jar in the book (I think it was the final Aftermath book?). I despised him but I actually came to feel sorry for the guy. In a way they made me kind of like him. I watched the PM on Friday and, for the first time ever, didn't really mind him. I think part of the reason is because I know how he ends up as a clown who is despised by everyone, even though he just tried to do what he thought was right.

I Personally Thought He Was Hilarious And One Of The Few Good Things About Episode 1, (Other Than The Lightsaber Duels) I Really Don’t Get Why People Hate Him, And When Did He Make A Fart Joke, I Remember Him Stepping In Poop, But That’s It
