So I was just watching the making-of doc for TPM and saw the part of Lucas saying, "Jar Jar is the key to all of this." Now I know that all of us always give him sith about it because how how ridiculed Binkses became. But looking into it further, the creator is really saying that, if they can get it to work VISUALLY, then he would be the key to the vfx. That's how I interpreted it; That if Jar Jar works as an animated character, then he is the key to unlocking the visuals for the rest of the film if not the trilogy.

Have any of you ever thought about that quote like this?

The best extras of all times is this, more than 10 hours in that DVD back to 1999. I enjoyed this dvd so much.
I remember that line and I think Lucas was refering to the character itself, on how Jar Jar will probably be the most interesting character of the new movies, they were wrong. I also remember Spielberg giving Lucas some positivibe vibes about how the movie will work fine and be a great sucess, again they were wrong....hahaha

I think it was all in the writing but , in my opinion, if ilm hadnt made jar jar who he was then characters like gollum wouldnt have been realistically capable .

I have always taken that statement by George to refer to how Jar Jar came across visually. I think it's pretty clear, in context. He said something similar about Yoda in ESB as well. As groundbreaking as the VFX were in Phantom Menace, I think he was right. And visually, Jar Jar worked.

Edit - I don't think you need a Humor tag on this.

Except that he goes on to say that, "Because he's (Jar Jar) a funnier character than we've ever had before"...which would imply that he wasn't talking about the technical aspects of making him work, but making him work as a character.

Hmm. It's been a while since I've seen it. If that's what he goes on to say, I wonder why I always took him to mean the visuals?

All this means is that I'll have to watch that great documentary again. :)

I always thought he was referring to both the character and the visual FX. He mentions how they have to get Jar Jar right to help pioneer the effects, but he also mentions that because Jar Jar is very important to the plot, it's essential that he fits into the story correctly.

Surprised it doesn't come with a Lego piece of Bantha Poodoo for him to hysterically step in.

You mean Eopie podoo, and it's got to come with the animal as well. You know? So it can fart in his face ;).

Jar Jar was the key in that scene. Without it, we never would have known he can smell. Seriously, it's the only scene in the trilogy where he fully utilises his nose!

He was probably talking about the potential failure of overdoing the comedy this time, which is what ended up happening.

Jar Jar was key to Sidious's plan to get the emergency powers but if he failed he would just find find another to passed it.

I think George understood that interesting characters like R2D2 and C3PO add to the realism of the environment, they also appeal to the young kid inside of us that would have loved a side kick like them when we were young I guess.
But it ties in to technology and futuristic elements. I think part of the reason jar jar missed is because they went a different way with him, It meant some of that got lost.

Jar Jar (not the character personally) is more a symbol of what went wrong with the PT.

Special Effects don't make a movie great, as they are only used to enhance it. Anakin & Padme and his fall to the darkside were the key to the Prequels. If we cared about those characters and believed his struggle when he turned to the darkside, then I would have loved those movies.

Having the ability to use a full CGI character, or having the ability to create new worlds like Coruscant, Geonosis and Mustafar don't mean squat unless the characters connect with the audience. Rey, Finn, Poe, BB8 connected with me Anakin, Padme and Jar Jar didn't.

I just love watching the crew's faces during the documentary.

I can't tell whether they're in awe of being involved with Lucas making SW or they're legitimately terrified at what they were making.
