Hi guys! There have been many theories involving Luke being manipulated and/or held in captivity. We’ve heard everything from ‘he’s strapped to a planet-destroying weapon’ to ‘the new baddie has him imprisoned via the force’ to even ‘he’s crazy and the new baddie manipulates him via force ghost trickery.’

Let’s use this thread to consider what it would take to somehow force Luke to do what you want. He’s obviously a threat to the new baddie(s)… and it seems unlikely to be handled in a simple duel of force wielders – even if the new baddie turns out to be an uber-powerful Sith.

So if Luke is to be manipulated somehow, what’s the trick involved to weakening his physical/emotional state? Is there a strange substance/crystal that nullifies his powers a la Superman and Kryptonite? Will JJ leverage that alien race from SW LEGENDS that cannot be sensed by the force (sorry, forgot their weird name at the moment)?

Or is this more of a ‘hurt the ones you love’ play with the baddie holding potential danger to his Luke’s friends and family over his head? Hell, let's go there… perhaps sex/love is held over Luke's head? Does the new baddie seduce him or somehow have him wrapped around her pretty little finger, dazed and confused in a strange love trance?

    Let’s boogie!

I'm thinking that an emotional factor will be more plausible and engaging for the audience rather than some sort of in-universe mechanics like a force inhibiting species or machine. Perhaps the opposition captures family or someone he loves. Those are just my thoughts.

In the prequel era we saw use of containment fields like those which held Obi-wan captive on Geonosis. However, these were far from a big plot point, the audience could infer that it was some sort of device that interrupted Obi-wan's force abilities. Would it be possible he's being held in some sort of larger containment field...possibly, but if the method of manipulation is a plot point; I'm going with emotional connection.

I'm with you... I keep thinking of Sheev's psychological torture of Luke in ROTJ...

Emotional and psychological torture have much more long term effects vs. some type of device to disable a force user. Vader is a perfect example. I would much rather it be some sort of emotional/psychological scenario.

Simple explanation- He had become so powerful, that he refused to use his powers at all.

Luke has no choice. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me. He is given no other option. In whatever situation.

Exactly! If Luke were threatened by the baddie with a "You could hurt the ones you love" sort of thing, that would fit in line with his character. Add the factor that if Luke is becoming more and more powerful and trying to stop the enemy and they keep parrying with this psychological warfare, it could end up bringing Luke to a point where he gives up.

Of course the only way for that to really work is if this enemy has an advantage over Luke's friends. Maybe a super weapon that can fire at incredible distances, but only powerful enough to destroy ships, and not quite enough to destroy whole planets. Sort of like the Eclipse star destroyer. "Threaten my life and an automatic signal will be given to fire at your friends." A bit cliche, but if done well it could work.

Feel free to bash or enhance my idea, folks.

I think Luke is wiser than in ESB when he rushed off to help his friends. He is more level headed than in ROTJ when he almost fell to the dark side.

Maybe he once had faith in his friends and that was his weakness as the Emperor taunted him with but now I think it is alot more than the that. The whole galxy is threatened and only he can do something and gather the means to help destroy this threat.

Devices that can control force-sensitive beings or block the force seem ridiculous as force users could simply reach out with the force to shut down those devices, no? That was something that bothered me about the ray shields in ROTS. I think Luke will be emotionally manipulated to do the bidding of the enemy, if that is truly even a real plot point in TFA. Someone will credibly threaten someone he cares for to get him to do what they want.

There's a rumor that two actors were hired to play characters important to Luke: His son and the mother of his son.

Hmmm, that would be interesting. So, possibly, they won't be shown until the climax of the film, as it might be a way to build suspense, wondering if the wife and child are alive or dead?

Yes, the rumor even states that they won't appear until the end of the movie.

He's probably glad to have that beard off his face, so he can eat a burger without having bits of bun and cheese getting stuck in there.;)

Uninhabited planet minus a spacecraft equals prision.

Another option is not tech but mystic he has been lured to a place that using his power manifests wrong or wakes something better left sleeping.

    1. Shock and awe. Have hundreds of evil Sith whispering in his ear, making him think he is going mad.

    2. Let him watch the video of Anakin killing the younglings. Remind him of who he really is.

    3. Block access to him by light-side entities like Obiwan and Yoda.

    4. Isolate him on some Skellig. :)

    5. Make him think he is doing good by doing evil.

    6. "THERE! ARE! FOUR! LIGHTS!" :D
