Luke Skywalker, son of the Chosen One, and arguably one of the most powerful Jedi to ever exist. We are well aware, upon the defeat and redemption of Darth Vader, he became a Jedi Knight.

Yoda said as much upon his death. However, when we meet Luke Skywalker in Episode 7, he is a Jedi 'Master'. Typically the title of Master was granted to venerable and extraordinary Jedi or a Jedi that had completed the training of their own Padawan. Considering the state of the Jedi Order after Ep. 6, how did Luke Skywalker become a Jedi Master?

His power is great enough, I imagine, to earn him the title alone, but I think there could be a story worth exploring.

Did he self promote himself to Jedi Master, or did the spirits of Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin put him through a 'Master' trial of sorts? What do you think? If they did, what do you think the trial would be like, different from the Jedi trials? Or how do you think he became a Master? (Anakin's probably salty about it, too, haha)

I guess since he was pretty much the only Jedi around, and the founder of his new era Jedi Order, he automatically assumed the title of Grand Master. At this point it would be only a title really, something to define his role in the Order, but obviously as he got more and more experience he would deserve and earn this prestige.

Yeah, I think this is it really. A Master is someone who is, I guess, the best at their chosen craft. Well, Luke being the only Jedi would thus by definition be the best!
Just out of curiosity though and not that I doubt it, but where is it stated that he is a Jedi Master? I guess I'd wonder whether Luke now, after the turmoil he has faced, sees himself as a master, even if others still do.

Seem like the title "Master" was a political one in the prequels?

Luke is no Old Republic style Jedi, he clearly draws his power from both light and dark. I mean the dude walks into Jabbas palace and chokes out those two guards to save his friend, that is clearly a combination of light and dark. Also notice how he brings down Vader, he uses the Dark Side because he wants to save his sister from being found by Vader and Palpatine. An ability does not make you good or evil, thus the old ways of Jedi are over, the ranks of the Order are dead and gone. He is not the last of the old Jedi but the first of the New.

Well if you are the teacher of a jedi, then you become a "master" which is the jedi term for "teacher".
