Also, if they somehow cram some kind of superweapon into this I'm going to laugh out loud. At this point I won't be mad or disappointed, I will simply chuckle all the way through the film.
And this hole will be filled with Poe and maybe also with Finn. I really don't see Lando returning in IX.

A lot of TFA's issues I argue come from LF and Kasdan/ Ardnt. More so, Kasdan as he is well-past his prime. That doesn't excuse Abrams as he is the captain of the ship. But blame I argue for why the plot was paper thin should come from all fronts. CT gives me hope because he is a fantastic screenwriter and he is smart enough not to repeat the same mistakes as Kasdan did. And also, Abrams isn't stupid. Seriously, some people need to rationally think this out? Do you know how bad it would be if SWs copied ROTJ, especially assuming if TLJ will be amazing and not a copy of ESB?

That would look so bad. I mean that would alienate not just the hardcore naysayers, but even the supporters of the ST. So yeah; Abrams and KK aren't dumb. They will have to craft something original. As for whether or not it will be good, much like TLJ, remains to be seen.

I just came home from work to this, and I can't believe it is actually happening...
The writer of BvS and Mr. Reboot are going to rush out a movie in 2 years with no script (or anything in particular) ready yet... Genius idea, what can I say.

JJ migh've been good for ep VII, but I doubt he'd be good for ep IX. He lacks the wit and depth required to finish Luke's story.
Not to mention Terrio... BvS's script was an abomination, an insult to basically every DC source material.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but they should've left Trevorrow do it instead. Even Lucas would've been better...
    No, this is not good.

I don't think he was good for "The Force Awakens". I'm still trying to figure out what the damn title means.

On the other hand, I loved "Batman v. Superman". Perhaps Terrio can inject some originality into "Episode IX".

    Calm down.
The problem with BvS was not the script by Terrio.

Wit and depth?? LUCAS BETTER? Stahhhhp

Okay, you just reminded me.. and now I'm sincerely curious. I recall you telling me you stayed spoiler free for TFA. Knowing now that JJ is coming back for RotJJ.. are you thinking of going spoiled or spoiler free this time.;)

I had no problems with "BvS". I definitely had a problem with "TFA", along with the first two Star Trek reboots.

    Of course you did.
That's not shocking considering you couldn't figure out why a movie is called The Force Awakens when a character literally says "there's been an awakening. Have you felt it?"

When I think about it, it's kind of unsettling to me that having Rian back was genuinely on the table, because I would love that scenario to happen so much. If the rumour of him being LFL's first choice is true, it must have been technically possible.

The only reason for him turning the offer down that I would be comfortable with, is that it was impossible (e.g. schedule-wise) to get the whole writing/directing package. Having Rian working on somebody else's script defeats the purpose. And it is likely they wanted to do it this way. I imagine even co-writing wouldn't be comfortable for Rian.

J.J. could very well be already 100% into writing, whereas Rian is occupied with TLJ up until early 2018 (just think about the whole promotion). It even might have been not enough to push the release date to December 2019 if they wanted Rian to write and direct.

I think Rian is just exhausted. TLJ is not even out yet, there's more to promote, he's getting grief on his Twitter all the time. He deserves a break. I also wanted him, but he's not even done with TLJ yet.

It's also he just doesn't want to do two Star Wars movies back to back. It's a ridiculously massive undertaking to do one. He'd basically be giving up 8 years of film making for Star Wars. With no break.

I think this is good news. I really enjoyed TFA. It had a sense of wonder and adventure that Star Wars is supposed to have. It was fun! Yes, everyone agrees the plot of TFA was thin. Starkiller Base was just too much rehash. But JJ gets Star Wars and I think he'll take the trajectory that Rian Johnson creates in Ep8 and bring it home. There are not many others who would be a better choice really.

My first thoughts on the matter were of the "Ughghg" variety. I do like a lot of what TFA did but I wasn't a fan of JJ's gigantic mystery box premise and all.

I'm sure IX will be at the very least pretty good, and I'll like it, but I was kinda hoping for someone new to have a turn in the chair. (Obviously) I haven't seen TLJ yet, but part of what makes it seem so appealing right now is the new and the different that Rian brings to the project.

    *shrug*

Not a bad pick by any means, but relatively boring and I think they could have done better.

I'm less worried about JJ directing than I would be with a director new to the franchise. JJ knows these characters - and the characters (especially Rey) were the single best thing about TFA. At the very least he won't betray them.

We also know that he understands the feel of a Star Wars movie. He's not going to make a movie that is completely out of place with the rest of the trilogy.

And given that he publicly acknowledged the criticisms about TFA being too similar to ANH, I imagine he's coming back to prove he can do something original inside the Star Wars Universe. If anything, I'd be concerned that he would go too far in the other direction - but I also imagine that the rest of the story group will keep that from happening.

The heart of the story needs to come from the second act anyway- it won't be on JJ to do anything more than find a satisfying resolution for these characters that he obviously cares a great deal for.

Force Awakens was beautifully made, I'm glad J.J is closing this trilogy. It's fitting. (r2-d2 2)
