But him building the domus aurae and needing senatorial proscriptions to do it wasn't. Point is, Lucas never really made a very good movie, he can do effects, but screenwriting, filming and editing, not really.

Plus Nero wasnt letting Rome burn just because he was crazy...there was a good political reason for him to let that fire burn.

The sheer irony of defending Lucas after the PT then trying to lay this quote on JJ....

I guess JJ is the safe bet for the commercial interests of a blockbuster industry notoriously averse to risk. It certainly can't be easy delivering to SW fans who demand originality yet thrive on nostalgia!

JJ's become the Hollywood goto for buiding on/rebooting/homaging other people's work and while I saw his relevance for TFA I don't see his filmaking style as something that really excites me for IX. I'm happy to wait and see of course - and to be proven wrong.

On the upside his filmaking career has garnered increasing critical acclaim within his particular genres...

...so while I'll keep my expectations low, I also hope he answers back with something special and beautiful.
I sometimes feel the same about reading the comments of "loyal" SW fans who seem to take any film criticism as some kind of personal affront!

While I didn't really expect him to come back to the franchise so soon, I'd be lying if I said wasn't pleased to see this news.

George is the best at copying himself which is not exactly a good thing and I love 'ol George. JJ made TFA by design the way it was and it worked no matter the stigma it gets from a minroity of complainers.

I'm absolutely fine with this decision.

Given how Miller and Lourd left Han Solo and Trevorrow left IX within the space of a few months, turning to someone who already knows the ins and outs of what it means to make a Star Wars film at Lucasfilm under Kathleen Kennedy and Disney absolutely makes perfect sense from a certain point of view.

As for those who were certainly in the minority in not finding enjoyment in VII, I think there's a good chance we see a much better JJ than ever before seeing as he should be able to leave his mystery box at the door, what with VIII expected to answer many of our questions, unless of course the go-ahead has been given to X before release, in which case, perhaps he might try to open it one more time. Either way: he's not re-establishing a universe by playing it safe, and, more importantly, he will not be restricted as much by his own film philosophy as a result.

I'm much more concerned by the decision of Chris Terrio as co-writer at any rate: Argo is of course great, and he won an Oscar for it, but BvS had some laughably poor writing throughout, and so Justice League should be a good indicator as to where his writing prowess currently lies (which doesn't exactly instill me with confidence, but alas, I will save my judgement for November).

As the news has sunk in over the day, I've gotten a bit giddier over the idea. I think in this case JJ might not actually be the touted "safe bet", that we are taking a risk in giving JJ act 3. He's never done a sequel this deep into a story, and he's never been asked to tie up the loose ends from someone else's movie.

I dont think he was that involved because he would have respected steven spielberg and with the date being pushed back and all as well, I hope he reels it in with his mysteries but keeps it open ended so they can develop the next trilogy as well

I am thrilled JJ is back. He helped me fall back in love with star wars with TFA.

If the haters want to continually bash JJ for "rehashing" star wars, then I expect the same level of bile to be directed to Kasdan. The notion that JJ "ruined" star wars is a complete farce.

The ultimate would've been if JJ directed a Rian Johnson script, but bringing back JJ is good enough for me.

Lucas re-hashed it with TPM too.
    It's all borrowing from itself.
    It's part of Star Wars.

Scenario #1: JJ cleans up his own mess. Resolves all the open endedness of TFA and makes a good movie. Karma works...happily ever after.

Scenario #2: JJ continues to dwell in the mystery box for "creative" reasons and we're left to wonder and debate...until episode X...and the mouse takes a money bath at our expense.

I'll cross my fingers for #1, but hold unto no expectations

Open ended movies that are there simply to kick start a trilogy, is not a mess. It's the purpose of the movie.

To be fair to JJ and Terrio. JJ admitted one of the biggest mistakes of TFA was how similar it was to ANH and regretted it. So I don't think it'll happen (although it's a possibility)

Now to Terrio, the script for BvS wasn't the problem, it was the execution of it by the director and producer.

Someone mentioned that earlier and I asked if they knew where to find that quote cause I looked and couldn't find it. So do you know where to find it?

also, Terrio has an oscar for Argo. Whatever the problems of BvS, he's a great writer.

I really don't mind at all that J.J. Abrams is directing episode 9. I'm actually relieved that he's been chosen, and I'm just as relieved that episode 9 has been delayed to December 2019. This gives J.J. and the studio plenty of time to create an ORIGINAL () and satisfying story to end the new trilogy.

And many often forget he co-wrote all of TFA with Lawrence Kasdan, and as much of a legend as Larry is, he is equally "to blame" for the perceived unoriginal aspects of TFA, if that is in fact something disliked about the film.

In interviews that came out after Force Awakens released involving JJ and Larry (sometimes Ardnt as well), many detail their creative process behind the film, and not everything is as black and white as JJ decided Force Awakens should be a thematic and visual homage to A New Hope. It was widely a group effort.

Though it was certainly his vision, stuff like the backstory and politics of the New Republic and First Order, as well as the history of the Knights of Ren were axed by Larry's suggestion to JJ (much to Abrams' hesistation, I may add), as he felt it explained too much and was needless exposition, stating the old films and the samurai movies they were inspired by never needed to explain the politics and origin of stuff on screen.
