JJ admits that Rey and Kylo had never met before Ep. VII

I really don't know what to think as JJ made a mess of things in TFA. Why would Rey be anyone important that Kylo had heard of but had never met? This destroys the theory of her being Luke's daughter as Ben would have seen her as he was both Luke's nephew and padawan. We can't say she's Han and Leia's daughter either as once again Ben would have at least met his sister so how can a little girl that was abandoned at the hands of a jerk like Plutt be so relevant that Kylo Ren had heard of her? I really wish that episode 8 would give us these and many more answers but I really don't see this happening. There were just to many unanswered questions in TFA that I know many fans would like to see answered like why leave Rey with Unkar Plutt, how did Maz Kanata end up with Luke's lightsaber, why did Lorn San Tekka have the map to Luke, why did R2 wake up at the very exact moment that the other part of the map was found ect but I think they won't even care about this and move on with the story leaving us in the dark about a great many things.

 

Some people have already pointed out that JJ could be playing with us. Maybe he differentiates between Kylo Ren and Ben Solo.

So, Kylo Ren never met Rey but Ben Solo did.
It is true from a certain point of view.

But if JJ doesn't differentiate between the two, then some Rey theories are destroyed by this statement.

 

If he's messing with us then that's completely unfair. It was cool 39 years ago. It's just not fair now after all that's happened.

 

But

It would be really lame if that were to happen and it wouldn't make sense now that TFA is over. Back in the day when everyone was shocked by the Vader being Luke's father thing, Lucas played it in a cool nicely done way. While Luke didn't know the truth about Vader, Vader did about Luke and he took him completely by surprise and did it on their first encounter. What point would it be now if Kylo Ren tells Rey that he is her brother? Had he told her when they were dueling and she was disoriented and confused, Kylo could have easily gotten the upper hand in the fight but now that we are going to see her when she trains with Luke? Where's the fun in that? Kylo is going to be like ''I'm your brother'', Rey is going to be like ''And?'' and all of us fans are going to be like ''Yawn. Saw it comming.''

 

perhaps, because some persons (Snoke? his parents?) DID NOT want him to meet her and never revealed him where she had been sent?

In the movie, we first see BB8 come to Artoo and blip-blop something (and then 3PO says he's down since Luke has gone).
In the novelization (the book is actually poorly written, it says something like - I translate from memory and from my french: "what occurred between the two droids was too fast and too tiring for a human" - on the moment, I thought: fast, OK, but tiring ?????) they say that BB-8 asks Artoo if he has the missing part of the map. From that moment, Artoo starts searching his database, and wakes up when he finds the missing map.

 

I'm glad of this decision, it made their first meeting memorable.

 

What is not being clarified in this commentary is WHEN Kylo "heard" of the girl. In fact, we saw when he heard of the girl - Snoke and Kylo talk about it. For all we know, THAT is when he first heard of her - after Snoke discusses the "Awakening".

It doesn't necessarily mean she's been on his mind for years...

 

Are we to take JJ's word over the book? JJ does seem to be a bit like Obiwan, giving partial slanted truths. Kylo: "It is you" after the battle between Rey and Ren says he knows to me. UNCONFIRMED: I have not played the Disney Infiniti game but I have heard Ren says "cousin" to Rey. Cant confirm that last bit, but Ben Solo for sure knows her in my mind.

 

You're right, it doesn't mean that. However, even from my first viewing on the day of release when he flips out and says, "What girl?" the way he reacts makes many people think that he knew her but with what JJ says, it still makes it seem that he is aware of a girl.

 

Well why would they bet if they've never met?

 

Kylo Ren said "curses" not "cousin".

This might be a great way to bury the idea they are siblings.

Is there an official age that Ben was sent to train. If he went with Luke before age 11 then Leia might have had her hid her keeping it a secret while Ben was w/Uncle Luke.

 

Abrams has never outright said that Rey won't be revealed in the future to be Han and Leia or Luke's daughter or anyone else's daughter.

He is however deliberately using other language in a concerted effort to leave people with the false impression that he did.
