No. TFA showed us that REY has force abilities. It leaves Finn's status up in the air. And judging how Pablo Hidalgo isn't shooting down the idea like he did for Snoke being Plagueis something tells me it is at least undetermined.

That's why I think he's going to sense it in the force. It's really the only way he can find out about his past without it being unrealistically lucky.

They looked like semi-bored office workers "just doing their jobs," like how people in Nazi roles would say, "we weren't aware of the brutality fully because we were JUST DOING OUR JOBS", OR like how a lot of people who've joined ISIS have done it simply out of necessity to survive where they live and not die and be protected .

I thought that the essential theme of both Finn and Rey is that, to their knowledge, they have no real past. As far as they know, they're nobodies. But what lies in store for them is far more important than what previously happened.

As far as I'm concerned, Finn's parents are the Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru of the Sequel Trilogy.

I find that hard to believe. At least for Rey. They'll want to explain where she comes from so her powers don't look like a**pull. Even if it's just a sentence.

Oh, I'm not saying that Rey's past isn't important, and I am highly certain that they will go there. I'm just saying that we basically learned everything we needed to know about Finn's past in one movie, and that there's no need to dwell on it further than that.

There is actually. He needs his own arc outside of chasing Rey, and the most natural one I can find is where his family is from. I mean what would you do if you were taken from your home and brainwashed to be a soldier and then broke out of it somehow?

The thing about writing story is you always want to follow what's natural with the character, like a river. You can throw in twists and turns, but if you go against the current that character will feel contrived.

We got Finn's past, and even an explanation for his lack of a last name. So there's no need to go back there, just move forward. Give him a different arc. The same is not true for Rey, who's backstory is being played up as deliberately mysterious.

It would be natural if he had actually shown concern for what happened to his old family. The reason why I don't think he's concerned is that they're probably all dead.

I would much rather have his story arc be based around his continuing bromance with Poe and getting into the swing of being a rising Resistance leader as plot threads, as they were things that actually were shown in the movie, and would be more logical stepping-stones for future plot threads than a generic "MUH PARENTS" arc that came out of nowhere.

Especially since Rey's past and her parent's fates is already likely to be a big plot point, and it already kind of is with Kylo as well. So no need to go to that well a third time.

Let's not pretend we had enough time to understand these characters. And the little bit of development we did get from Finn, the first thing he mentioned was his being pulled from a family he'll never know. Sounds like he thinks about it to me.

His "hanging out with Poe and fighting with the Resistance" isn't a story line. It's not an arc, or a plot; and considering Poe was supposed to be dead when Finn's general arc was planned I can't imagine his story having too much to do with Poe in the sense of plot and story progression. Not only that but war has always been a backdrop for character story. Running around "leading" battles isn't character work. That's why Leia always got pulled away for one reason or another. No one wants to see a character "lead" a bunch of people without seeing the action.

    He has to go somewhere.

    Why not?

We are assuming that his story isn't relevant to the plot, which I find hard to believe. Plus why are people so sure his doing errands for the Resistance isn't going to be only a start for his story?

When has anyone in a SWs adventure story spent all their time doing Rebel missions without any character work?

That's like saying "Han and Leia on the MF running from The Empire" wasn't a storyline. It most certainly was, because there was more going on there below the surface. And there's no reason why Finn and Poe being war buddies couldn't have that as well.

You're not getting what I'm saying.

Two characters "being around each other" isn't content. That's a composition.

As far as we know Finn might be alone, or with the new female character. But once again that isn't story.

Story is Plot+Character+Setting. Saying he's going to be around Poe working for the resistance is an empty prediction.

Maybe Finn gets some jedi training from Luke as well. Or maybe even Rey.

    Finn's parents aren't important.
Where Finn comes from isn't important
    Finn's last name isn't important
Finn's past and relationship with the First Order ain't important
Finn being FS is unnecessary (apparently we got enough of those types)
Finn actually having a story arc over three films in not important
Finn having a more than platonic relationship with Rey is not needed
Finn playing a major role in the defeat of the FO is a non-starter
Finn getting major on-screen victories is not needed because he ISN'T THE LEAD, blah, blah, blah.

This has been pretty much the attitude of so many people both before seeing the movie and after. Despite JJ going on record stating time and time again that Rey and Finn were the two leads, the attitude has been by a shocking amount of folks that Finn doesn't matter. Yeah, those folks like to toss out token, uninspired stories that Finn could take part of in the future (join the Resistance and fight the FO.....or join the Resistance and fight the FO alongside Poe!). But that's about it. Heck, he might as well stay in a coma if that's the case. Actually there are people who do wish that or even death on the character.

I'm on the record of being extremely disappointed with what was done with Finn in TFA. It has led me to have less than a stellar confidence in how TPTB will handle the character going forward. But even I still have to concede that I can't say for certain how the character will end up. We're only 1/3 the way through this new trilogy and while it will take some heavy lifting to salvage this character, in my eyes at least, it is humanly possible....just as long as it gets underway in VIII.

But so many of you are putting Finn in a box. Once more it is only about what he can't be to you guys. Your attitude suggests he is pretty much insignificant to the larger storylines. There is no serious contemplation on these boards about any upcoming plot lines other than those involving Rey, Kylo, Luke and Snoke. Coincidence that all are just happened to be confirmed force sensitive beings? Heck, no. Despite protest that Finn doesn't need to be FS or a jedi to be a co-lead and have a great character arc is bullcrap. Being a user of the force is all the vast majority of you SW fans care about. Which is why many fans of Finn want him to be FS and perhaps why many people out there don't want him to be (they would be forced to start paying attention to him if he were).

But I'm not going to dwell on the whole FS thing. Whatever happens or doesn't happen on that end is not as important. What is important to me is JJ's words in a handful of magazine interviews in which he not only touched upon to what amounts to a hero's journey for Finn, but didn't make any distinction of importance between his journey and Rey's. Granted Rey appears to be the most vital of them all but JJ pointed out again and again how much this new trilogy was about THESE TWO primary characters. (two figurative orphans who discover one another and activate each other; a story about a boy and a girl.....). JJ and Kasdan planted the seeds and pretty much mapped out how Rey and Finn will turn out by the end of the trilogy (although leaving more than enough room for the following directors to get them to those places in the ways they see best). So....do I take JJ at his word? That's a tough one. After how Finn was portrayed in TFA I have my doubts. But if indeed Finn and Rey are kinda going their own paths in the next film would it be smart to devote so much time to a Finn character who is that much of a dud unless there were some actual big plans for him?

By the way it only takes an imagination and dedication to give all characters their just due if you want to make their storylines compelling. So why not explore some of Finn's past? If there were no plans of doing so then it wasn't necessary to give him such a background in the first place. In fact you can do something small such as Finn and some others arriving on a planet after some battle and Finn feeling something.....familiar about it. And he comes to the realization that this was the homeworld from which he was born. And we can leave it at that or explore it further if more children were still being taken from that world.

I think it is intentional that Rey, Finn and Kylo were all not going by names given to them at birth (I'm convinced Rey was called something else before Jakku) and that all three were wearing masks when we first see them in TFA. There is something more going on there which means there is more going on with Finn. Or perhaps I'm getting too optimistic once more.
