In a recent interview with KUSC, John Williams has indicated that he thinks that scoring nine Star Wars movies (and composing a theme for the Solo spin-off) will be enough for him. He also personally believes that there's more to the story of Rey's background than to say that she's the child of two impoverished junkers.

Williams explained that, regardless of whether or not Episode X happens, he's satisfied with composing four decades' worth of themes for the Galaxy Far, Far Away and that he's content with ending his work with the last chapter in a trilogy of trilogies:

It's a little sad to hear that Williams will basically part ways with the movie franchise whose score made him an icon for so many people, but at the same time, it's perfectly alright if he's ready to move on - the franchise needs to put a spotlight on other great composers to expand beyond its comfort zone. Besides, he'll still be with Lucasfilm to handle future Indiana Jones movies.

In addition, Williams is of the opinion that there might be more to the story of Rey's parents than what Kylo Ren told the poor girl at the top of the Supremacy:

While Williams is likely blindly speculating here (it wouldn't be the first time, since he totally thought that Luke was Rey's dad), and as much as I'd argue that Rey's parents being super-special defeats the purpose of the sequel trilogy's theme of heroes coming from anywhere (as they established in the closing scene with Temiri 'Broom Boy' Blagg), it certainly wouldn't be unprecedented.

Return of the Jedi had to address the elephant in the room with The Empire Strikes Back's big familial reveal, since it was originally intended for Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker to be two separate people. Episode IX might find a way to do something similar by revealing that in spite of Rey's parents being unremarkable on the surface, there's a hidden legacy that they carried with them. But I personally think it's more likely that Rey's story will involve building her ties to her new family - Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, Finn, Poe Dameron, and (probably) Rose Tico, along with forging a path forward for the Jedi with Luke's assistance from beyond (hopefully, with a few of his friends).

Who do you think should take the reins of the Star Wars franchise after Williams completes the saga? Let us know in the comments section and in The Cantina.

He has More than earned it.

We should all be so fortunate that we get to have him give us more outstanding works for the lil' bit longer we have him for.

John Williams is a true genius and we are so fortunate to have him as part of our saga. Everything has a beginning and an end, so there will be a time when somebody will have to continue on what he started. My immediate choice is Kevin Kiner, who has been giving a really good work both in TCW and Rebels for the saga episodes onwards - for the other trilogies, there could be other choices *cough Ramin Djawadi cough*

BUT please, do not fuel all those contumacious ones who believe that Rey is worthless if she is not related to someone else on the saga. LOL.

    He's definitely earned it.

And as much as I love him, I like the idea of other people stepping in. Giacchino's Rogue One score is one of my favorites in the series.

OK so I had to go to merriam webster....here you go

    Definition of contumacious

    : stubbornly disobedient : rebellious
    • She was warned that her contumacious conduct would not be tolerated.
The door is open for one of John Williams' "padawans" to take the reins......Michael Giacchino.

I love that he's doing IX, and it's expected. He's getting up there, and though composers go until they can't anymore, he's as much a part of those movies as anyone in my book. He's 86. He's allowed.

In my eyes, it is the perfect moment for him to leave - the only condition is, that there will be no Episode X for a long, long while. As long as Williams lives, he is - for me - the only choosable choice for the music of an Episode. However, for the Anthology movies, it was the right way to find new ones and for me, it was unessecary, that Williams got involved into the Solo score - for me, the Anthology movies should have another "music DNA" than the Episodes (except, of course, the using of the well-known themes for the well-known characters).

I think he’s more than earned it.

The way I see it—and according to the Rolling Stone piece on The Last Jedi, Daisy Ridley and JJ Abrams feel the same way—Episode IX marks the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. Unfortunately, I doubt Disney and Lucasfilm are willing to give up capitalizing on these new characters that easily, it makes sense. If Kylo Ren dies in Episode IX, and assuming Leia dies in the film or has died in between The Last Jedi and Episode IX, there won’t be any more Skywalkers. This allows them to close off this story without having to kill off the main protagonist and venture into new, uncharted territory with the Anthology films and standalone projects.

I can’t imagine anyone other than John Williams doing the score for an episode in the Skywalker saga, so Episode IX feels like a fitting end in multiple ways. He’s given a lot to this franchise, and I think we’re all eternally grateful for that. Michael Giacchino proved to be a worthy successor with Rogue One, and going forward, I think it’s possible to create equally brilliant Star Wars music without John Williams, but he should be the only person to touch the Skywalker saga music.

Once Episode IX is over, they need to just move on to new stories. I love the Sequel Trilogy, but I don’t want the Skywalker films to be ruined because Lucasfilm continues to drag out the story just to earn a little extra dough. Episode IX needs to be the conclusion of the story, in my opinion.

@Trev Outstanding post...agreed. Never thought of JW's tie to the Skywalker story, that certainly makes a lot of sense with him departing. Kind of like closing the chapter on the book. Looking forward to new chapters now.

Thank you! :) I just feel like John Williams’ music is such an integral part of the Skywalker saga, and it’s also one of the many reasons why Episode IX should conclude that family’s story.

I’m heartbroken by the fact that Episode IX may officially be the last Skywalker film, because there’s a very good chance that, as much as I will love all the new Star Wars films, I won’t be excited for them the same way I was with these ones. That being said, the Original Trilogy is of the utmost importance to so many people. We got what happened before, we’re getting what happened after, and with the only living Skywalker in Episode IX presumed to be Kylo Ren, the villain (which means there is the chance that he could die), it just makes sense for that story to end so that they can move into new territory and bring a beautiful close to the Skywalker saga.

John Williams was a huge part of these films. It makes sense for his departure to mean these films are finally done. A lot of the people involved (John Williams, Anthony Daniels, etc.) are getting up there in age and it just makes sense to finish this story so that it doesn’t drag on forever and eventually get ruined. There are so many more storytelling opportunities within the Star Wars universe, so to me, John Williams leaving is just another reason for them to finally end the Skywalker saga.

I've often wondered just how much they let JW in on. I recall seeing speculation based on the musical structure of Rey's them that she was...you get the idea. Does he just watch the film and compose or does he get direction from the writer and director?

This is probably out there in black and white in some interview that he has done, I just don't recall seeing it.

If he gets direction then his speculation about Rey somebody may hold some weight. For the record, I am beyond caring which way it goes. If drunk scavengers is the ultimate answer, I'm OK with it.
