Present for a panel at the Academy of Scoring Arts in Los Angeles, Don Williams, John's brother and timpanist, revealed that work has already begun on a very lengthy score for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

For Star Wars fans, more is always better when it comes to John Williams' scores. And it appears as if our ears will be treated to a lot of new and familiar themes from the Skywalker Saga come December. According to Don, John has '135 minutes worth of music to write - that kinda tells you how long the film is'. While this doesn't confirm the movie's running time (as a musical score is usually shorter than the film itself), this should serve as an indication as to a general idea for approximately where a current cut of the film may exist. Don does confirm that scoring has already begun and that 'it is top to bottom music, we've done four days and we've just scratched the surface. We've got something like 34 minutes in the can.' In addition to creating new sounds, Don promises that we'll be hearing plenty of familiar notes as well.

As with the scores for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, Don hints that the themes may not be overtly played but hidden within certain scenes and pieces of music.

Regardless of how long the film ends up being, promises of new and old John Williams music should make any fan and cinephile excited to hear what's in store for us come December.

Special thanks to @JWilliams_Fan for the find.

That’s the perfect time for a SW movie as I was worried at the long run time of TLJ. Pacing is a huge part of a SW movie (any movie), and I’m happy JJ didn’t go Lord of the Rings on us and make it 3 hours.

Well not necessarily true, there could be scenes with no music i.e. heavy dialogue like scenes.

This does nothing to indicate how long the film is tbh. No one should use this as an indicator. There will be scenes with no background music just as some of the score will not be in the movie. I expect TROS personally to be close to TLJ in length.

But otherwise, it seems John Williams is going all out and bringing back as many themes as he can as well as tweaking new ones and adding new takes onto them.

The Last Jedi had 78 minutes of music and the film itself was like 150 minutes. Based off of that and the other films having a similar discrepancy between soundtrack and runtime, I wouldn’t be surprised if TROS is at least longer than TLJ. I’m not sure it’ll be three hours worth, as much as some of us might want it to be, because JJ Abrams likes to keep his movies on the shorter side.

I feel like with what we know of the film it can't be 2:15 because it'll feel too rushed and condensed, especially since we knew the script was kind of long

2hr 15min of score, probably at least 30 min without. Im guessing around a 2hr 45-50min movie.

I agree, which is why I think the film itself will be longer than the score like all of the other films. At least two and a half hours is my guess, ideally three.

edit: I expect Episode 9 to be longer than TLJ. 170-180min is more than possible

Great little nugget. Thanks all the way around for a bit of pleasant news (JW is the definition of universally beloved) in such a quiet time.

I the film gets close to TLJ’s 152. 2 1/2 hours of JJ showing how creative he can be while having the stated goal of wrapping up the 8 previous movies, including a score JW is truly focused on, it sounds like a great way to finish things off.

We have to consider that 135 minutes of score doesn't mean that they will use 135 minutes of score. Like in movie editing- we have much more footage than we need for the actual movie. In scoring we have more music than we actually need too.

Keep in mind that John Williams writes full tracks which will only be used partially for the movie. Furthermore alot of tracks won't be used at all and end up on the cutting floor.

I still think the movie itself will and should be around 130 - 140 minutes long. The score should cover 70 - 80 minutes then.

And a lot of that doesn't even end up as a deleted scene on a blu-ray release. It's how they are able to use live action Leia. While no doubt they'll be some CGI trickery to make the scene work with the dialogue. NOW that's BTS stuff that I actually wanna see. What was Rey looking at when she was "hugging" Leia?
