Ahead of the Disney+ presentation at D23 Expo, GMA sat down with creator and executive producer of The Mandalorian Jon Favreau to talk about the upcoming first ever Star Wars live action series. The show is clearly inspired by the infamous bounty hunter with too little screen time - Boba Fett. Though Favreau made it clear that he will not appear in his series, which will feature mainly new characters. Also, Favreau briefly touched on the amount of Easter Eggs in the series, which has been previously discussed.

    Here's what Favreau told GMA:

You can listen to the brief interview below (from 2:08 min.)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYsjK1m3M5Q&feature=push-u-sub&attr_tag=eoQL4-QHPH7UG0pF%3A6

What's interesting is that the audio when Favreau says Boba Fett is not in the movie has been interrupted and the line that followed was clearly edited in. Not sure if this was intentional and if there is something more here than meets the eye, but I guess we will find out in a couple of months time.

The series, take place about five years after the events of The Return of the Jedi, but that doesn't mean that they can't show a flashback with Boba Fett if they needed it for the story. And let's not forget that it's not fully clear if Fett is dead or alive after his close encounter with the Sarlacc pit. And as J.W. Rinzler once said:

Stay tuned for the Disney+ Showcase panel later today (4pm PST) where we will surely get more info and details about The Mandalorian.

I'm fine with The Mandalorian focusing on a new character (and am pretty pumped for the show regardless), although I still hope they address Boba's fate more fully at some point, whether it happens in this series or somewhere else.

I love how Favreau gives info about The Mandalorian.

Other SW creators be like, "Weelllll we can't tell you the name of this blaster used by this unnamed minor character . . . ;););)"

And he's just like "Oh yeah this is Kara Dune, this is the Razor Crest, Boba Fett isn't in it . . ."

Boba is not a mandalorian anyways, he is just a clone with a mandalorian uniform.

Time to explore new characters. Let the past die.

Well, as much as I'm looking forward to this series (possibly more so than TROS at the moment!), I'm going to be a contrarian and say it's not something TOTALLY new. I've been saying in a number of places that The Mandalorian is basically Boba Fett in everything but name. If you ignore we've been told he isn't Fett, he could very well be.

They've probably just decided to have him NOT be Fett to be free of all the baggage and history he comes with. They don't have to come up with a way of him getting out of the Sarlaac, a story already told in Legends. Plus he doesn't have to be 'Temuera Morrison'. He can be a mysterious man behind a mask again, like Fett originally was. Only now he has the added mystery of a 'man with no name'.

If the prequels had never happened, I'm pretty sure this would have been a Boba Fett series, and still tell the same stories.

I was, at first, confused as to why they were making a show not about Boba Fett himself, but a character who was very clearly inspired by him all the same. However, I can see now the reasoning behind the decision and why this might be a good idea. Essentially going back to the concept of what Boba used to be like and building a new story around that. That's something I can certainly get behind.

That said, I was never satisfied with Boba's story ending by him falling into the Sarlaac. That just seemed too cruel of a fate for him. I hope they can still incorporate his escape into the new canon somehow.

There's now talk of a Solo series, so maybe along the line Boba Fett may pop up some where... hopefully.

I said elsewhere that Fett was more of a cool and awesome action figure than a cool and awesome character in a movie.

Now we're getting a series based on that action figure.

The Mandalorian is the version of that action figure we imagined him to be.

Conceptually it's still the 'same' as making a series about Boba Fett, but for anybody who pays no attention to behind the scenes stuff, they are maybe going to look at him and think 'Boba Fett!' - and I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing in the new series itself to contradict that. But freed of the Jango clone heritage, the writers have more creative freedom. With a new guy in the armour they can have a clean start.

Anyway, I'm repeating myself now I think :)

Until it is definitively shown in the show that the Mandalorian is not Boba Fett, I will believe he is. Although I think they will leave his identity a mystery like The Preacher in Pale Rider.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. Jon Favreau might say in an interview that the Mandalorian is not Fett, but any general/casual fan who wasn't there when he said it will be none the wiser and - unless it's stated in the series otherwise - will be free to believe he is Boba Fett.
