I never watched the 3D animated Clone Wars show before (but loved the Genndy Tartakovsky one) as I had thought it was more of a kids show and never gave it a chance.

I'm now really enjoying getting into Rebels and so thought maybe I should give it a go, especially if it is the only canon SW I haven't seen...

My question is: do I need to bother with the feature film that preceded it?

    Thanks!

The feature film sets up some of the overall plot (particularly Anakin being given a padawan) but if I recall correctly, there wasn't all that much in the feature film that tied into the series as a whole.

Thanks Dekka - will give it a miss then :)

Is Anakin as brattish and annoying in TCW as he is in AOTC and ROTS? :p

I prefer Anakin in TCW to either AOTC or ROTS. I was the same as you, a hold out on it until early this summer, when I watched all six seasons when they came on Netflix. I actually went to TCW movie when it was in theaters and left before it was done. The show is much better, especially if you can make it to like halfway through season 2. Seasons 3-5 are especially good Star Wars.

Like he said above...hold on until you get through season 2. The first seasons can be hit and miss, but by season 3 its mostly hits.

There's an episode in Season One that you need to watch the movie, the sixteen episode, I think. And in season Two, the episode "Cat and Mouse".

I'm not trying to disagree with you outright, but l never finished the movie, and it was six years ago when I only saw part of it, and I don't feel like I missed anything during the run of the show. I may have though, I suppose.

Ops... actually, you don't need to watch the movie to understand the episode "Cat and Mouse". But the season one episode I think it does, because the episode is set a little time before the Battle for Christophisis. The movie was done to introduce the series, but it can't interfere too much in the series later.

Same here I just watched the first three episodes this weekend, I watched the CW movie when it was released but I got through it all. It was not bad but the TV series seems to hit the floor running with lots of Yoda action from the kick off, followed by Anakin pursuing General Grievous. Its not been to shabby..

If your still undecided like I was for a while try watching the episodes in bulk, seems good way to watch so far.

Personally, since it's canon I watched it several times. While it's NOT entirely necessary IMO, it does setup storylines which will figure later as Dekka said. I didn't really like TCW movie at first but it grew on me. Also, the show turned out to be quite excellent.

It's not entirely necessary to watch the movie, and as some people have pointed out, it sets the stage for some of the childish and droll episodes of TCW's first season. It DOES introduce Ashoka, Christophsis, Rex (and the interplay between him, Anakin, and Ashoka), and Ziro the Hutt. I only mention the latter, because I felt wholly unfamiliar with the character (having not watched the movie) when he/she appeared in later episodes. Also you get a taste of how bland and cringe-worthy Padmé is... Trust me, you'll see more of her...

Still on first season about episode 7 and who appears f@+king jar jar! I felt the need to warn other TCW newbies. Mesa not ok going to have nightmares about this. He makes C3PO look like master of the universe. Padame is in there too

Watch the movie and know it only goes up from there except for the few jar jar episodes lucas insisted on being sprinkled throughout the series.

I don't acknowledge the prequel movies as existing in my world but the cartoon ranges from OK to fantastic depending on the story. Hope you get some enjoyment out of it :)

    Anakin
One is a wooden, lifeless marionette. And the other is a cartoon. HA! ;)
Seriously though cartoon Anakin is great. No whining about sand either.

And the three best characters to come out of the prequel era are in that cartoon, not in the movies.

    Ventress
    Ahsoka
    Rex the clone Trooper

You'll even see Hera's (from Rebels) Uncle in a couple of episodes.
You really should start with the movie though so you can see what you get with a lot of lucas' influence and mucking about as opposed to letting the creative team just do their own thing. you'll appreciate the series more if you first see how bad it could of been. Also, the stories told out of order was Lucas idea as well. The creative team had no desire to do it that way but were out ranked.

The movie is basically just a three episode story arc put into one sitting.

There's no reason not to watch it.

One thing I can't figure out about Rebels is if it's actually running off of story arcs like TCW did (there's somehow little planetary travel yet little story carry over from episode to episode).

If you don't like TCW by season 3-4, it's just really not for you.
