With the cast announcement yesterday, it mentioned that Alan Tudyk was playing a motion captured being. Since it takes time and resources to render/make them AND the movie is a little more than a year away, do you think they will 'reuse' a species that they have for motion capture?

What species would it be as well?

Given Tudyk's other roles, I'm guessing it will be a character responsible for injecting some comedy into the film. Since it's reportedly supposed to be a dark and intense film, I don't mean an all-out comedy relief character, but one who will inject some levity here and there to balance out the tone of the film. What species, though? I have no idea.

Maybe its the I robot connection, but my first instinct was that he is playing some sort of mocaped droid. An Ig-88 type where it would be easier as a mocap performance than a practical effect. Maybe a protocol droid?

Tudyk generally provides levity, but he also usually does it in a slightly sinister ways. Playing cartoonish villains or characters with questionable motives.

*Edited to add: Tudyk would actually make a great 0-0-0, the insane protocol droid from the current Darth Vader comic series.

He's confirmed as a mocap character. While that could be a human it would be unnecessarily expensive to mocap one human creation on top of another.

I think he might be a new species entirely. If Lasat can become Canon from old Chewy designs and obscure EU, then I think Disney can make something fresh. I figure the comedy would have to play a big role in how the character looks though.

It's funny, with TFA I was hoping for some new and different starship designs, but they just updated the classics we know. With Rogue One, I'm the opposite, There are a lot of cool existing species in the Star Wars Universe. I hope they use something we may already be familiar with. I additionally, Lucasfilm is going to be careful with mocap characters and comedy. No one wants a Jar Jar repeat.

It would be great if he could play a certain Duros, Cad Bane anyone? It would be great to see Cad Bane on screen or maybe and this is just wishfull thinking, Hondo from TCW, I know he already has a terrific voice actor, but let's face it, this is Alan Tudyk, Mr. Leaf in the Wind, if anyone is right for it, it's him!

I'm guessing they'll use makeup and prosthetics for the more "humanoid" looking aliens such as Twi'leks so I expect he'll be something a bit more exotic.

My thoughts as well. Look at what we know from TFA.
We have Ello Atsy and the leaked photos make it pretty clear he is an actor in make-up and prosthetics.
Then, assuming it IS Maz handing Leia the saber in the teaser, Maz is small, and the proportions of her limbs and extremities are too different from human for someone to be in makeup and prosthetics. And the rumors of Snoke being reptilian, and wearing a mask or having a face of molten/liquid metal, Disney is definitely using MoCap to do exotic things.
I'd love to see him have a completely non-humanoid body, or multiple limbs.

Whatever he is playing, it will no doubt be something that will require plenty of expression for his facial features. That could be something completely new, or it could be an established alien species from the movies that wouldn't have been able to portray the necessary expressions while using prosthetics. While I highly doubt that he will play Cad Bane, Cad Bane is still an excellent example. We first see the Duros species in ANH in the cantina and while they look quite excellent in that scene, I'm doubtful that they would be easy to get expressive facial expressions out of.

I don't think it would be impossible to get expressive emotions out of an alien like this using practical effects, but I'm willing to bet that it would be very difficult to pull off, especially if the character in the film has a lot of scenes.

When we look at TCW's Cad Bane however, it was much easier for them to get expressive emotions across by way of animation.

Mo-Cap seems to be a much easier and possibly cheaper way to get something like that done in this instance.

Even though the Star Wars films have tons of aliens that were created with practical effects, you have to remember that the vast majority of those aliens were created simply as set dressing to flesh out the Star Wars universe. Most of those background aliens were never intended to be place front and center in a role that would require much expression from them. So even though they may have been created through practical effects originally, it may make more sense to create some of them digitally for roles that require the alien in question to be a main character with lots of screen time.

All of that being said though, I lean more towards the idea that Tudyk will be playing a completely new species to the SW films.

I also think you get a glimpse of him in the back ground of when Jynhas a shawl wrapped round her face (The scenes could take placearound the same time in the film as the Imperial hover tank) it's not a very clear shot but it is a front view of his chest area.

Just re watched the trailer & its at the 0.29 second mark just before the line I REBEL

Rumor is that it is an imperial droid that Jyn has previously captured and reprogrammed to be her companion and help her.
Kind of fills the C3PO/R2D2 role from previous films.
