Rebels is essentially a bridge between 2 very distinct time periods in the Star Wars Universe... a time when the Jedi were a true power in the galaxy and a time when "their fire has gone out in the universe".

Obviously we do not see Kanan and Ezra anywhere throughout the original trilogy and since the arc of rebels will likely lead us close to the beginning of A New Hope before it's conclusion, it begs the question of what will happen to these two lead characters at the end of Rebels?

Will the Inquisitor finally be successful in hunting the two down? Will they vanish without a trace never to be heard from again? Or is there some other situation you see being the fate of the Jedi and his young padiwan?

I have said it elsewhere but I believe Sabine and Ezra will have a child together... Who ends up being involved moving forward... Ezra didn't become a Jedi... Kanan will die...

Technically, I don't think Kanan ever completed his training, it got interrupted by Order 66. This is probably why he wasn't confident in his ability to train Ezra. Maybe training Ezra and helping him face and reject the dark side is his final trial.

It has been speculated that the crew of the Ghost are the ones who get the plans to the Death Star and deliver them to Leia. I believe this is quite possible, and it could be explained that during the OT they were off doing other more covert things.

I could also see something happening to Kanan and Ezra finishing his training with Luke some time after RotJ.

I think they both die... off screen. Maybe after delivering the stolen Death Star plans Vader tracks them down himself. I could see him blaming the Inquisitor for his failure... killing him and then destroying Kanan's ship

EDIT: To conform with the new spin off movie plot leak I will drop the stolen Death Star plans and instead say Vader tracks them down after ANH while searching for Luke and the rebels.

Hera and some of the crew get away with the Death Star plans on board the Ghost as Ezra and Kanan stay behind to cause a distraction. could do a shot of hera looking down from the ship and seeing Kanan and ezra laying there on the ground.
The Ghost is last seen docked with the Tantive IV, handing the plans over to Leia.

Me personally- I'd rather see Ezra depend too much on the dark side and eventually become an inquisitor. While a final fate for Kanan be he dies defeating the current inquisitor. or a different spin on that - The Inquisitor kills Kanan and Ezra goes over to the dark side while defeating the Inquisitor then Vader telling Ezra he will take the Inquisitor's place or become an Emperor's Hand or something.. dun dun dun.. opening for him appearing in Episode 7.

If you want a super happy ending for the cartoon series, you could have something similar to the end of Empire strikes back. The crew handing over the plans to Leia, then their sensors picking up the approaching Imperials. The Tantive IV setting course for Tatoonie and the Ghost leading the bulk of the Imperials away. Hopeful/ happy shot of them all in the cockpit going to hyperspace.
then leave the dark stuff for the movies. Have an elderly Zeb or Sabine, etc in episode 7 as a cameo or something.

who knows though.. they had plenty of child murder in revenge of the sith so maybe they will go with a dark ending. i'd like to see them going out doing something heroic like destroying the prototype of the super star destroyer or something

If was writing the ending for rebels, this is how I would end the show:

At some point, Kanan learns two things :
    1. The Empire is building the Death Star, and that the plans for it are being stored at an imperial base.
    2. Yoda is still alive.

Kanan (without ezra) makes contact with Yoda, and Yoda tells him that he is the only Padawan who survived order 66. Yoda is pleased with how Kanan has grown in the force, and no further training is required of him. It is now time for his trial. Kanan must must make sure that the Rebel Alliance obtains a copy of the plans. Yoda tells Kanan that when the Rebel alliance has the plans, that he will have completed his final trial, and will be a Jedi Knight. Kanan does not tell Yoda about Ezra.

After Kanan and Yoda part ways, Yoda contacts Bail Organa, and tells him that the time they have been waiting for has arrived, and that it is time for the two children to begin their training. Yoda instructs Bail to send Leia to with the Death Star plans to Obi Wan.

The Ghost then joins up with the Rebel Alliance at a hidden base (on dantooine). From this hidden base, a small fleet of rebel ships, led by the ghost, attack the imperial base where the plans are being stored. (for some legends fan service, lets have the Moldy Crow as one of the ships in this attack force). The rebels attack the base and take the plans. As the rebels make their way back to their ships, the Inquisitor makes his appearance. Kanan tells Hera and the rest of the attack force to get the plans to the rebels, and they will cover their escape from the inquisitor. Hera tells Kanan that staying behind is suicide, but Kanan says it the only way, and that getting the plans to the rebellion is worth the sacrifice. Ezra tells Kanan that he will not be able to do this alone, that he he will stay behind with him. A lightsaber battle commences between Kanan, Ezra, and the inquisitor. As the battle ensues, the Ghost jumps to hyperspace with the plans, the inquisitor strikes down Kanan, and Kanan dies a full Jedi Knight. Ezra, upon seeing Kanan die, is overcome with rage, and reaches into the dark side of the force, attacking the inquisitor, after a short and aggressive lightsaber fight, Ezra kills the inquisitor. As Ezra stands over the body of the inquisitor, all of the doors in the room except one suddenly shut. Our of that one door, Darth Vader enters the room. Vaders says that he is most impressed with Ezra, and that he can feel the dark side flowing through him. Vader says that he is now in need of a new inquisitor, and tells Ezra to join him or die. Ezra refuses, and Vader ignites his lightsaber and the camera cuts off (in a scene mirroring the youngling massacre in ROTS. With this being a kids show, I doubt that they will show Ezra, a character that kids identify with, being killed on camera).

In the final scene the Ghost is docked with the Tantive IV. Hera hands of plans off to Bail. Leia is standing next to Bail, and he tells her "Years ago, a Jedi Knight named Obi Wan Kenobi served with me during the clone wars. He is our only hope now. Take these plans to Tatooine and give them to Obi Wan. From there, bring him back to Alderaan."

From here, we all know where the story goes, and this ending would also leave Ezra's fate somewhat unknown, much like Asoka's, leaving him available for future projects if needed.

Info from the latest episode which is now available online if you have access through WatchDisneyXD...

Kanan speaks with Yoda through the Force in this episode, but I do not know if it is obvious to him whether Yoda is alive.

Yoda also speaks to Ezra, so he is aware of Ezra and his training under Kanan.

It wasn't explicitly said but the conversation between Yoda and Kanan I get the impression that at least at this point Yoda is recognizing Kanan's status as a full Jedi Knight based on what he senses in Kanan through the Force and the fact that he has taken on an apprentice.

Aside from all that, I think your theory would make an interesting story.

im really liking the stolen plans theory here. that would make a really good story. I was at a Christmas party with some co-workers the other day and this kid came up to me pointing at my shirt and said YOU LIKE STAR WARS?!?! naturally i said of course! its the best. and his mom was telling me about how he got all this Rebels swag from Santa. i asked the kid if Ezra will be a Jedi and he said no way! hes not strong enough. so what if hes 5 the kid might be right.

Truly wonderful the mind of a child is- Master Yoda

After seeing this episode, I agree with your assessment that Yoda views Kanan as a Jedi Knight at this point.

One will fall or die the other will be doing something unbeknownst to Yoda that is as interpreted as them doing what Obi-Wan instructed them to do "trust the will of the Force."

As cool as it would be to see Ezra in The Force Awakens, I'm not betting on it. Kanan will die either at the introduction of the Rebel Alliance or the end of the series, while Ezra stays alive all the way to see the Death Star plans be delivered, maybe teaming up with the bounty hunters. Instead of helping Luke, I think Ezra will need his help, and that Ezra must learn from the strongest Jedi of his time to become a Jedi Knight. Kanan, especially after talking to Yoda, seems close to being considered a Jedi Knight, even if his skills are not up to par, but Ezra will still be little more than a Padawan when Kanan dies. I think Ezra will go into hiding and meditate on the Force, until he senses some calm in the galaxy post-ROTJ and ventures out to tell his tale and learn from Luke then. The reason why he won't be in The Force Awakens is because it's not his story that matters any longer. He might be seen on a council of sorts, but nothing more.

First you need to remember the Prophecy.

"and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal,
but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...
and either must die at the hand of the other for neither
can live while the other survives...".

It's obvious that Vader kills Ezra. Jokes. I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it. A post from above made me.

I hate the fact that they may not play a pivotal role in the Star Wars universe, in one corner I want them to just continue on their adventures and we learn new cool things about the Jedi that are becoming Canon, but on the other hand I want them to be a major role, but then it leads to questions etc later on down the track.

Q.) Where are Kannan and/or Ezra during the original trilogy?

A.) Lando is protecting/ hiding them on Bespin. Perfect place to lay low from the Empire, right?

    - The Inquisitor kills Kanan (mid season II)
    - Ezra somehow completes training with Yoda
    - The Ghost crew will have a codename "Bothans"
    - Ezra confronts The Inquisitor, defeats him
    - Ezra, Zeb, Hera die, Sabine will escape with the plans

In my opinion the show will last 2 Seasons to connect the gap between III-IV and then, they will make a new show called Star Wars: Alliance .. calling it right now

I completely agree. We now have 2 different OT characters that have known Kanan who have said that the Jedi are extinct. I do think that he will find a way out of his current situation, however, and his death will not be until near the end of the show.

That is a great point and one that I hadn't even considered. So at some point Tarkin either needs to see Kanan die or be convinced that he is dead. I wonder if the creators were aware of this dilemma when they brought Tarkin onto the show...

I hope so, because that is one of the reasons we have the Storygroup. The good news is they are Star Wars fans like us ... so methinks they comb over the final details just like us))

Except the bothans got the plans to the second Death Star in RotJ, not the first one in ANH.

Someone considers a theory about Kanan's fate off topic in a thread about Kanan and Ezra's fate?

I think he is about the right age but there are other possibilities if he is an existing character, so maybe.
