Get out of here, you know that nobody went after her before they saw the movie. There's absolutely zero evidence of that. Meanwhile, the Internet is littered with attacks on her after people started seeing the movie. Even if the comments have since been deleted, we all know that people harassed and threatened her after the movie's release. Such comments did not exist prior to that.

What people said to and about her was absolutely wrong, but this narrative that she was attacked because she's a woman or a minority in this retroactive history of everyone pretending to love her performance is disingenuous and wrong.

I'm not sure which comments you are referring to. Who did I get personal with?

It's simple really. Don't be a jerk. Before you say something ask, "Is this something an a-hole would say?" If the answer if yes, don't say that thing.

In a more serious sense: I really think the situation isn't that complicated.

We know that personal attacks happened. The why or when doesn't really matter all that much. Obviously opinions based on racism or sexism are outright wrong and evil. But even okay opinions--like thinking Rose was a weak character--can be wrong if couched in personal attacks and directed against the actor. In a sense, "don't be a jerk" is really what it comes down to.

Assume that the person you're writing about will read what you're writing, even if it seems unlikely. Have your opinions, but express them in kindness, even if it doesn't seem like kindness is necessary. It is.

I mean, I don't know enough about the situation to say definitively either way. Do you? If so, maybe it's an issue you need to take up with Collider. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not everyone is pretending. Many people here said they didn't like the way her character was portrayed. And many were okay with it. Guess what, I liked the character of Rose, and there is nothing "retroactive" about it or has anything to do with the way KMT was treated online.

Is it so hard to believe that there are people out there who have a different opinion than yours? I don't understand why you keep insinuating that everyone who says they like Rose is only doing so out of pity for how the actor was treated.

I know that there's no proof what you're claiming. Nobody knew who she was when she was cast in the movie. There was nothing to be outraged about, because we hadn't seen her performance yet. The article in question is making the claim that there are people who disliked the character before they even got the chance to know her – and you are saying that maybe that is true. He did not prove his claim and neither did you.

I'm using hyperbole.I thought that was obvious.
Nobody came out of that movie (again, I am exaggerating to make a point) saying that Rose was their favorite character, it was such a strong performance, etc. The praise came later, after the attacks. Then there were the campaigns for Rose, the fanart, the cosplay, etc. it came as a result of the attacks, because people feel bad for her. Some ass holes went way overboard, so some misguided but well-meaning folks had to try to make her feel good. It's the world we live in now. That's not to say that nobody truly, but let's not be naïve.

And then she has to come back with this copout of an argument, which is reinforced by a bunch of politically correct, apologetic, social justice warrior type journalists. That it's all racism and sexism? Ugh. How cliché and frankly untrue. I want to feel bad for the girl, because what happened to her was truly uncalled for and terrible, but she's making it very hard at this point.

I know I didn't, because I wasn't trying. If there is no smoking gun, who is to say that you are right and they aren't? That's merely the point I am trying to make.

Huh. Lots of buzz words in there.

I think maybe it's time to drop the argument that she and others are doing this merely to garner sympathy and rally people to a cause.

This is a very cleaned up version of advice my dad gave me as a kid. And the world would be a lot better off if we as a species adhered to it more.

Not true at all. I saw comments from people saying they were unhappy about her casting because it was all for social justice issues or some such nonsense. Those comments were few and far between, and definitely not here on the Cantina at the time. But there were comments.
You haven't given proof either, if we're being fair.
It wasn't obvious, actually. There were elements, but it wasn't obvious because you keep going back and forth when what you're saying is hyperbole and when it isn't. There were a lot of people excited for her casting because they could dress like a hero who looks like them. Yes, there was an influx of that in response to the backlash, and I agree that some of it may be too much, but at the end of the day, there was a good reaction and reception of her character before the backlash. I had a friend tell me despite how much they were disappointed in TLJ, they liked Rose.

So, since our argumentative points of been addressed, let's leave this here and move on from the conversation. There is nothing more to be said. If you want to continue the conversation, please take it to a PM.

That's not at all what we said, but if that's the way you want to take it, then so be it.

I also liked Rose. I liked her theme (it's catchy and sweet), I liked her "sincereness". Yeah, the line she said to Finn was a bit awkward but there was a lot of good there for me to go on.

THAT SAID... I can see why people would not like her (the character) but all this hyperbole makes it seem like she's worse than freaking Jar Jar!

Honestly I really see no way someone reasonable would take Kelly's words here the wrong way. She seems like a thoughtful, humble, down to earth person who clearly thought a long time about this and what she wanted to say and I'm glad she's finally turning over a new page. Maybe the time is for all of us to do the same?
