I get what you're saying, but this is different than gushing. If he came out and said, "I saw 15 minutes of TROS and it looks great!" That is gushing and you take with a grain of salt and sort of expect it since he's friends with JJ.

This is deliberating saying the ending shot is going to be something huge, and even I wasn't expecting that. I don't think he's lying, as I really believe him in that respect. The big question is what does 'mindblowing' mean? Now you setting everyone up for speculation.....

Would you judge me very harshly if I told you Logan’s Run is one of my old favourite films? ;)

I saw it in the cinema as a kid:

“Capricorns 15. Enter the carousel. This is the time of renewal. Identify. Rise.” :D

I showed it to my son recently and he honestly couldn’t stop laughing during the whole film. It hasn’t aged well I suppose.

#2 feels like the type of dark/ominous ending movies seem to shoot for these days. The first couple movies where the hero was a complex/conflicted character or there was no happy ending were cool because they subverted the audiences expectations.

Now subverting expectations is as played out as the term “subverting expectations”!

SW, to me, is a classic feel good adventure. I hope they don’t go with the depressing ending.

I also hope it is not a depressing ending. I really could not see them ending the saga on a depressing note. I also really do not like ambiguous movie endings. That is just lazy and crappy. Unfortunately, I could see the possibility of an ambiguous ending to the saga. I really, really, REALLY hope they don't do that!

    This. Exactly this.

Smith was told to not enter a set location (if I understood it correctly, this was a sound stage location that JJ invited Smith to come to after recovering from hospital, so not Jordan). It was, according to JJ according to the article, the set that would spoil the ending for Smith, not a scene/actors/whatever. For a set to spoil the ending of RoS it would have to be something really significant, something immediately recognizable and potent with meaning. That means, it must either be a return to somewhere we know (or, as someone suggested, a location that exhibits a thing of great importance and meaning, like a Vader suit or a marble statue of Leia, or whatever), or it must be something new that changes our entire perspective on the franchise in an immediately recognizable way (something like the the ending to the 1968 Planets of the Apes; the latter option is very hard to imagine as anything other than Star Wars coming to Earth somehow, and that would be crazy).

So, my money is returning to a well-loved set imbued with meaning, and that really narrows the options down... Probably something from the OT, although Naboo or Coruscant could be valid PT options... My top-3 bets are:

    1) The Lars homestead on Tatooine = Skywalker story coming full circle
    2) The Millennium Falcon in ruins (the MF in and off itself would not spoil the ending as the ship featuring in RoS is a given) = bitter sweet ending
    3) ... I... I can't think of one (which doesn't mean there aren't lots of good choices for a 3rd option)

Had we not already seen a Death Star in the teaser, that might have been a good guess as well. But now, a DS location (control room/hangar/throne room/whatever) would not spoil the ending.

Any grave -- like a funeral pyre built on a Kashyyyk three-hut platform -- might also work.

Blargh! RoS can't come soon enough! :D

What if... the Falcon landing on the Lars homestead? Instead of riding off into the twin suns [sunset] they're landing onto into the twin suns. What I do think is genuine though, is that it sounds in line to JJ's "f*** it" when it came to production of TROS. Whereas TFA was understanably safe with not a whole lot of risk.

I don't doubt that the movie will be spectacular but Kevin Smith cries to his own farts.

Yeah, I could see the ending being a Pyrrhic victory, but not something entirely dark.

Disney is well aware that kids watch these films.

Whoever said that Kevin Smith would gush over nearly everything is right. This is why I have no trust in his opinion, let alone the opinions of other critics.

To be fair, if I got invited to a Star Wars set I would do the same. What Star Wars fan wouldn't gush if they got invited?

    Exactly.

    I don't think he's a schill or it's some guerrilla marketing tactic.

He's just a fan that got to do something awesome, and he was giddy about it for a while.

The amount of attention that this simple statement from him is getting, from both sides, is absurd.

I think it's going to be the original Lucas ending....R2D2 as the narrator of all 9 films.....

    https://screenrant.com/star-wars-9-ending-r2d2-whills-george-lucas-twist/

".... Lucas expanded upon this, revealing that he believed the story of the Skywalker Saga was being relayed to a Keeper of the Whills by none other than R2-D2, taking place 100 years in the future.... "

It would certainly be somewhat mind blowing. Not sure what the set could be, probably Fred Savages bedroom from the Princess Bride :)

It’s a set that has to be recognizable:

    Mos Eisley Cantina

    Has to melt our minds:

Captain Kirk and Spock walk in...

I agree the final scene could indeed involve a location immediately recognizable but lended a new context.

Some addition suggestions to those already offered:
    • Dagobah
    • Young Anakin's room
    • Darth Vader's castle (or simply Mustafar)
    • Endor
    • Naboo
    • the Senate
    • the Jedi library
    • Luke's new Jedi Academy

On the other hand, I could easily imagine there being something unfamiliar and/or shocking introduced at the very last moment to make it thought-provoking or hint at future stories to be told.

    Some random fan-fic-ish ideas...
    • Someone removes a helmet of one of the Sith troopers. Rey's face appears. Rey: "That's not true! That's impossible!"
    • Celebrating their victory over the First Order, someone asks Finn for something. He reaches for it and it comes to him: he's Force-sensitive, and everyone is stunned.
    • Rushing in from a sandstorm, a young boy enters, greets his mother (Rey), and introduces her to Qui-Gon Jinn.
    • A pre-TPM era Palpatine is following Shmi Skywalker. Just as he is about to use the Dark Side to spark the conception of Anakin, Shmi turns around, ignites her lightsaber, and Palpatine is no more. From the shadows, Darth Plagueis steps forth: "You have done well, my apprentice."
    • R2-D2 finishes relating his tale to the master "Whill," who thanks the droid, gets up and goes to a window after the droid leaves, removes his hood, revealing the smirking face of Palpatine.
    • A pre-TFA young Ben Solo wakes up, catching a glimpse of Luke. Luke apologizes. Ben reaches out, but this time he reaches for Luke's hand and says, earnestly, "Help me overcome this darkness, master Skywalker. Show me again the power of the Light." Together they take down Snoke, and the Jedi Academy goes on.
    • Obi-Wan enters the "World Between Worlds" and goes back to confront a newly minted Vader and Sidious. He is unarmed but carries something. Vader ignites his lightsaber. Sidious laughs. Obi-Wan reveals Anakin's children. Vader drops his saber, removes his helmet, cries, wanting to hold his children. Sidious tries to take them both on, but they work together to repel and overcome him. Anakin renounces the Sith and vows to love his children even though Padme is gone. And then, out from behind Obi-Wan steps Padme. Anakin and Padme reunite, and Anakin asks Obi-Wan to help restore balance and order to the galaxy.
    • In the Unknown Regions, a Palpatine clone-droid approaches a great throne. "We have failed, master Plagueis." Plagueis turns around. "Failure? Failure you say, Sidious? Not failure. Yes, the Light has risen. But: powerful Light, powerful Darkness. Remember the Netherworld. These Skywalker Wars have only begun. It is the Will of the Force." Possible bonus: Plagueis is revealed to be an older Qui-Gon Jinn or Mace Windu.
    • A ROTS era Anakin, intent on preventing all the pain and suffering he would cause in the future, enters the World Between Worlds, then runs into the Chancellor's room. Mace Windu is holding Sidious at bay. Anakin steps in to assist Windu, and together they eliminate the Sith threat. Before the Jedi Council, Anakin is granted the rank of master. Later, him and Padme are shown on Naboo playing with their children: Luke and Leia running in the grass. Yoda looks on in the distance with Mace Windu. Windu objects to Anakin being a Jedi and being married. "Saving what we love, fighting not what we hate. Our way now this must be." "Love?" Mindu wonders. "Yes, master Windu. Yes. For the Jedi it is time to love as well," Yoda says, laughing. Windu cracks a smile. The laughter of the Skywalker family fades as the camera pans to the sky and further up to the stars.
    • A long-pre-TPM era Darth Bane awakens in his meditation chamber, stares into the raging fire. He waves a hand, and the fire extinguishes. Several Sith attendants regard him nervously. "What have you seen, Darth Bane? What does the future bring ?" "The utterly inevitable. Fear. Courage. Hatred. Hope. No. The Dark Side will not be strong enough. Not nearly. We must seek another path." (the idea here is that it sets up the possible next KOTOR-era trilogy. Bonus: two Sith attendants wander off, unconvinced. "He knows nothing of the power of the Dark Side," says a young Palpatine. "We shall see, master Sidious. We shall see," says a younger Snoke.
    • A TROS era Leia vows to put an end to the suffering in the galaxy. Luke guides her to the World Between Worlds. Moments later, on the Tantive IV, in storms Vader. Young ANH era Leia is brought before him. "Darth Vader, only you could be - " she stops herself, regards him with sudden awe. Vader pauses, steps back, visibly shaken. "But - how? How can this be?" he says. Leia is frozen in curiosity. "Search your feelings.... Father?"
    • As the last scene fades slowly, it is shown to have been emanating from an ancient Jedi Holocron. The holder of the Holocron is none other than a young George Lucas. He is shown to be standing near a crashed escape pod. Beside him is R2-D2. George looks up at the stars, reaches his notebook, and quickly writes down a title (The Star Wars) and the first few words of the opening ANH crawl.

Fun to think about possibilities :)

This question was brought up on SWNN podcast by John, James and Lacey. Will the ‘mindblowing ending’ be more nostalgic or a big twist?

My impression is that it was the set that they said was mind blowing and that JJ told him he should wait to see it on film. It does not seem like they were actually shooting the final scene when he was there. He already stated that when he was there he saw a scene being filmed. That was when he commented about the massive size of the set and the character he saw give their best performance. So based on the two interviews it sounds like Kevin went to the set to watch part of the movie being shot. He saw the memorable performance and the massive set that was built. While he was there people told him he needed to see one of the other sets and that it would blow his mind. At that point JJ told Kevin it was the set for the final scene and he should really wait to see it in screen which Kevin decided to do.
