Kylo Ren and Rey lightsaber fight....Holy cow!!!It was GOOD and i enjoy it a lot.Every time i watch it I can see Rey face trying to avoid Kylo BUT Kylo want to capture her alive and take her to Snoke. The part that i LOVE most is the picture below. When Kylo tell Rey you need a teacher....I can show you ways to the FORCE.Is when Rey close her eyes and the music change OLD SCHOOL and Rey change internally. How GOOD she starts to fight against Kylo.Kylo himself can not believe either and she cut Kylo face. Also she strike Kylo near the heart.WOW....She REALLY want to kill him.If the earth don't open in that moment....UMMM.I think that Kylo was thinking...."This is my end".She close her lightsaber and run to Finn to see how he was.I love this part of this movie. My question for all my friends here in the cantina....Did you like Kylo and Rey LS fight???Thoughts??

Especially considering they had some of the world's best modern day fight scenes choreographers just hanging about.

Don't get me wrong, JJ Abrams showed respect to them by just putting them in the film, but he probably should've asked for some tips while he was at it.

Now I'm posting it in the original post, cause apparently I'm trolling.

visually, best saber fight ever. Both aesthetically and in terms of choreography: finally people who fight realistically with dangerous weapons, not that silly twirling and dancing from the prequels.

What made this probably my favorite LS fight was that it was not refined or as smooth as previous LS fights/duels. Trees were getting chopped down, LS's were melting snow and ice, Rey and Finn were just fighting on instinct, and the participants actually seemed as if they were physically stressed, all of it was great for me.

i love a fight with real stakes and real emotions. if i want to watch ballet, i'll turn on PBS (and i do like ballet, but it's not what i want from a life-or-death duel!)

every time i watch Rey and Ren fight (and even Finn ~ the whole sequence!), i love it more. and i agree with @Ammianus Marcellinus that it's probably the best fight in Star Wars so far. there is so much going on in these two exchanges.

and there are moments of beauty in the style of it. yes, a lot of it is reckless and crazed, but Ren is clearly trained and he does some very nice passes when he wants to. but the storytelling of it (what we learn about the characters especially) is paramount (as it should be), and that's what makes it phenomenal for me.

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually enjoyed the stylized LS battles of the PT... I mean yeah there was one sequence w/Anakin and Obi Wan going at it that was kinda ridiculous when they were going behind the back with the LS for no discernible reason. But other than I enjoyed them because the nature of the blade of a light saber meant that many of the cuts that merely looked stylish could be a killing blow. Wouldn't work for metal swords, but for pure energy? I think it worked.

So did I love the TFA fight sequence? I enjoyed it that they chopped down some trees during the melee and that it was less stylish owing to the fact that neither one of them is fully trained. I wouldn't mind a more stylized battle between the two in the future (with Rey rocking the optional double sided light saber), but I think it will be impossible... the quillons on Kylo's sword just don't seem like they lend themselves to all that twirly whirly action without severing a hand in the process.

Both the Rey vs Kylo and Finn vs Kylo were great imo. Honestly, I only liked the Luke vs Vader better, because so much was going on there emotionally.
But aside from that, it was very emotionally involving (especially after the Han scene), and there was a lot of tension.
It was obviously better than the ballet routine from the prequels, but it also matched the tension from the originals (even surpassed some).

Imo visually it was the best from all epsiodes imo. The new sound is just immensely powerful. I really hope they will keep this new style for the new epsiodes.
What I liked most was the fact that they didnt overuse the lightsaber. In the prequels they used it ever second so it eventually became boring. When Finn pulled it out against Kylo, it was actually a very impactful scene, and it gived back the old glory for the lightsaber.

next time they clash i'm sure it'll be more finessed (but hopefully not more dance-y) since they'll both be better prepared. love the idea of a double-blade for Rey since she's already self-trained on the staff.

but i disagree about the quillons ~ he got pretty twirly whirly a couple of times during both fights. in terms of practicality, sure, it's pure fantasy ~ but they made it work in TFA.

If you can do it with a real medieval sword without the cross guard hitting your arm, then why would Kylo not be capable of such twirly whirly action?

Before I saw the movie I remember seeing an interview with JJ where he stated that there was no way they thought they could out choreograph the prequels. It's a good thing they didn't try because what came out was simply spectacular.

Whoever had the idea to have it in a dimly lit forest with snow had the right idea. I live in a place that's like that during this time of year, and my nephew loves running around outside with his toy lightsaber in the hour or so before dinner.

That said, I didn't like the parts where it seemed like Kylo was just standing holding his sword against Rey's while we get some serious-faced close-ups as though he is thinking "I'll just stand here and push my sword's blade onto hers, okay... just a sec... okay, she's looking at me... hmmm she closed her eyes... okay pressure maintained...now say something evil..."

Other than that it was pretty good.

You think that someone is pulling off the Anakin vs Obi Wan fight scene with a light saber with cross guards? LOL, ok you really are trolling me today.

No I'm not trolling. I though you were referring to Kylo doing these kind of swings with his weapon to taunt Finn in the forest fight. But now I see, when you explain yourself that you cannot imagine Kylo Ren fighting like Anakin and Obi Wan on Mustafar. I agree. My misunderstanding.

I can imagine him doing it, just not with the LS he currently wields. I can't imagine anyone doing it.

I like his style in TFA. It is a mixture between Katana- and medieval broad sword fighting. It's effective and grounded in real life. It is grounded historically.

The color palette at play makes it one of the most visually stunning light saber battles ever put on film. You can argue whether there was emotion or not or whether the choreography was the best it could be all day long, but there is no denying the power of red and blue lightsabers clashing against a snowy backdrop of black trees. Beautiful and disastrous... much like the Force itself.

The kanjiklub knows how to do sword combat, shame they didn't get to...they would've run circles around everyone in this movie.

This is previsuals too. Hell, it's not even a thing...it's just them trying to see if they could make a pg13 fight scene lol.
