Kylo Ren - Masked or un-masked for Ep.8?

Kylo seems very vain on the inside as well as on the outside and with his scar the helmet would NEED to be modified in some ways...I just can't think of how at the moment .

 

just out of curiosity, what makes you think he's vain?
that's a really interesting thing to say about someone who wears a mask all the time and squirms when his own colleagues see him.

 

Because he says something about how he's really not scary when he first takes off his helmet and revels practically in the feelings he senses in Rey...he could also be "vain" in the way he looks with his mask on which would be a reason as to why he'd want to actually wear a mask in VII & IX since he seems to be trying to emulate his grandfather so much .

 

he doesn't say anything when he takes the mask off. he just takes it off and asks her about being a scavenger.
in the book he's described as disdainful.

i find this interesting. someone else i know said he was vain, but i think maybe you're picking up on his arrogance, which is real different from vanity.

and yeah, no doubt he revels in the power of his anonymity when he's got his face covered. without the mask, his confidence is tenuous at best in TFA.

 

Yeah maybe I am...its been a month since I've seen the movie hahaha but I do agree with you, but I also think that vanity is also a part of the dark side of the force since it's about selfishness and inner self and all so maybe I was just piecing things together subconsciously but I bet he'll either embrace his new scar or NEVER take his mask off ever again .

 

hahaha ~ he might like that scar in secret because she gave it to him, but yeah he may likewise never want to show his face again.

as to the Dark side and vanity ~ that's a lot of ugly mugs who were Sith ~ hahaha. but i get your point. Ren definitely postures a lot (with and without the mask), but he seems to fall apart pretty easy when he can't hide behind it. he strikes me as arrogant and overcompensating for his insecurities, but not vain.

one of the things that's interesting about him is how shabby his outfit is in some ways: his hood is ragged, his helmet is banged up to hell, his light saber is a mess (both the way it works and the look of it), and especially on Takodana, he's very dirty (boots, the hem of his surcoat, etc.). he also slouches, clenches his fists, and walks very awkwardly. not really the overall presentation of someone who is particularly confident or vain.

 

So his physicality is an extension of his inner self ?

 

I suspect we are going to see him with the mask both on and off.

 

i'd say look at how he carries himself compared to Vader.
Vader was confident, stood up straight, moved with purpose, conducted himself with poise and dignity.
Ren is twitchy, awkward, and slouchy. the only time he manages to look fully composed is when he's standing before Snoke (and even in that scene when Hux comes barging in, you can see him self-consciously adjust his posture). he carries a lot of tension in his arms and neck and jaw (Driver even exaggerates this to an absurd degree in the SNL skit).

so yeah, i think his physicality totally telegraphs his disordered mindset.

 

i agree same basic mask might be slightly different a little more polished but the same

 

He doesn't say his name, but Lor San Tekka seems to know a fair bit about him, at least he insinuates it anyway

 

It definitely seems as though KOR club membership requires the wearing of a badass mask, so I guess the mask will be back in some form. Perhaps if he's going to get more evil in the next film (it's always darkest before the dawn...), his costume could be changed a bit to reflect that, including the mask?

 

It would be cool for the mask be be permanent ly attached to his fac due to his scar .

 

I think the only visual change we see in Kylo is his jacked up mug. Like I mentioned earlier, the villains in SW pretty much stay consistent throughout their span as the villain. Kylo was the focal point of all the graphics on all of the toy packaging etc. His merch sells well too. His look has become heavily associated with the new era of SW movies as is so I really don't see his look changing much while masked. Just my two cents Jo Jo.

Yeah, I guess he won't change too much. Though you have to think he may at least have to get some new robes without stabby lightsaber holes in them. Though I'm still holding out for shirtless, lol. I mean, even Luke pranced around in his training tank and yobbo overalls with Yoda, is it really too much to ask for some sweaty, shirtless Kylo doing some bad boy training with the KOR?

 

Hahahaha I dunno about shirtless but definitely some fresh robes.

 

it's funny to see you say this. i'm all for keeping his clothes on ~ if only because it seems to make sense for the character to be so weirdly guarded ~ hahaha.
that said, if circumstances changed in a way that he had to let his guard down (or wanted to), it would make sense to ditch some of the heavy layers.

 

Well, maybe he let's his guard down a bit with his KOR mates? Or even a potential love interest...

OK, I confess these hopes don't have a lot to do with the story telling, but meh...


Anyways, for some reason, your comment reminds me a bit of this Dune quote:

I guess masks and uniforms are just another construct to hide behind for those who lack true self confidence and belief.

So, in a way, I guess I'm saying I hope Kylo outgrows the need to hide behind a construct...

Well, it would be interesting to find out if the rumors about Kylo's 8-pack are true.
