Kylo Ren - Masked or un-masked for Ep.8?

Agreed he can be intimidating, seeing his face give me goosebumps, originally I thought his swordsaber would do that, yes his Snoke scene of more excitement IMO of his encounter with Rey's abilities than a rage of jealousy.

 

this one scene is his low point for me (the character); it's the one moment i think you can justify calling him out for "whining."
but i love how it's played because even he knows it--he's just out of control and can't help it.

of all the usurpation plot theories rolling around, it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be Hux trying to take out Ren as the weak link.
and if he does try, he's probably going to get killed for his trouble.

 

I would like it if he was masked throughout almost the entire film, until whatever lightsaber fight unfolds in the climax. Whether he's fighting Luke or Rey (or both), if he took off his mask revealing a scarred face and damaged face. I can't remember where I read it, and who knows if it's canon at this point, but I thought using the Dark Side was supposed to be physically taxing. Imagine Kylo Ren pale, scarred, and almost ghost like underneath his armor. I think Driver would pull it off marvelously.

I'm starting to think he might make a new mask out of Vader's old crusty one.

 

Well if he killed the Jedi at Luke's academy, people might have noticed. It's totally possible that they wouldn't but I feel like people know Kylo is Ben. People just don't talk about it.

 

I would like something like these designs.

 

I think they'll keep the same mask since they spent so much time figuring out what he should look like. I feel like he'd have back up masks, or Hux found it on the way out of Starkiller base and gave it back to him on the ship. He'll probably keep it on the majority of the time to hide his scar so others won't think he's weak, but he'll take it off, especially in a scene with Rey. I think they might change his costume though to something more polished or "formal", since he will be completing his training.

 

I hope the mask changes. Am I the only one that thought the mask was kinda lame and barely resembled Vader's? The chrome around it was what I mainly disliked about it.

though lately i can't shake the idea that he kinda looks like a puffin, particularly in the natural lighting on Takodana.

OK, I have to admit, this thought crossed my mind! A bare-chested Kylo Ren makes sense in the right context. Not in a sexualized way, like Hayden Christiansen's shirtless scene was (*EYE ROLL*), but more narratively relevant, like Luke in the bacta tank.

In fact, you could make a better case for showing Kylo Ren's body because the way his wounds/scars were acquired is important to him. It wasn't: "woops, got mauled by a Yetti" - he was wounded and beaten in battle, maybe for the first time (?), and by the scavenger girl no less. If they played that up (and especially with the facial scar, I think they should), I'd enjoy seeing that.

I mean, I had this utmost despise for Kylo Ren right after watching TFA for the first time, but the guy has grown on me, gotta admit it.

No matter what Mr. Hidalgo says about his absolute contempt towards conflicted villains like Kylo.

That is one of my two big questions regarding the identity of Vader and Kylo Ren:

1) After ROTJ, who else knows Leia is daughter of Darth Vader? We know by TFA and Poe Dameron's comic that she talks about her brother Luke, but I'm not 100% sure everyone in the galaxy knows Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are the same person.

2) After the Jedi-Academy massacre, who else knows Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son?

On both situations, a spread public awareness about it would mean conflicts for Leia. Being the leader of the Resistance but at the same time mother of the Commander of the First Order and daughter of the powerful Sith of the Empire would make people think she has conflict of interests.

poor Adam Driver. no wonder he hides from the public ~ that man will never have any peace again.

oh absolutely! don't ever doubt my feelings on that note ~ hahaha

i think we have a sense that part of what ousts Leia from the Senate is the knowledge/revelation of her ancestry?
i almost wonder if this knowledge is already known and creating tension, it's the scandal involving Ben (known or unknown) that finally pushes her completely out.
i've tempered my expectations about what we might learn from Bloodline, but i still can't wait to see if it offers any interesting clues at least with regard to the timeline!

also, just a stray thought about masked vs. unmasked:

it's really going to depend on whether Kylo Ren comes back in vii in control of his emotions. he wears the mask to intimidate and hide his sensitivity.
if he's still emotionally messy, he's going to continue to hide even when he doesn't need to (regardless of his scar or anything else).

 

Either way, he still has his Grandpa's looks.

These are the big questions of the ST for me. The GFFA tends to fluctuate on whether or not the events in the OT are widely known parts of History, legends and myths, or just an intimate little family feud that while involving the highest levels of government, were just little spats that happened behind everyone's backs.

Leia seemed poised to join Mon Mothma in founding the new government post-Galactic Empire, but what about all her baggage, her parentage being the perfect ingredients for a political scandal?

"Which is it, Senator? Your father was killed at Alderaan, was a Jedi hero, or was the menacing enforcer of an evil tyrant?"

Of course if all that came out she'd eventually want to go underground, retreat back to being a Rebel/Resistance leader. Then we have this young kid watching it all unfold while his dad comes in and out of his life, the guy was destined to be confused.

I am in the "no redemption" camp myself. I want to see a character get to that point where they have a second chance, and blow it. I've already seen some guy do the other option and die with a relieved smile as a metaphorical butterfly lands on his nose.

 

I'd prefer he not wear a mask. Now that he's killed his own father, he no longer needs to "prove his Vader-ness" and therefore has no need for a mask.

because if he's just going to look like this all the time:

he's not going to have an easy time maintaining his authority.

 

Ha! Wouldn't it be awesome if, by the time we see him again, he's such a sour-faced badass that he just walks around like IDGAF. No mask at all, just a big scar, and he doesn't care who sees.
