Kylo Ren's hood & tattered cape = emperor palpatine's?

Did anyone else notice that Kylo's hood/cape looks similar to Emperor Palpatine's cloak from the original trilogy and Revenge of the Sith? Just pure speculation here of course - nothing too serious. Kylo's textile does look like it has two thick strands per weave instead of one, but it's hard to compare given the shots of the Emperor were predominantly in dark lighting.

I came across this while pondering why Kylo's cape and hood are so dissimilar from the textiles in the rest of his outfit (obviously it's not Vader's, though that would have been cool, too). It just seems odd that he'd have that raggedy thing on his otherwise clean outfit unless it had some special significance to him. On the 6-inch Black Series Kylo figure it's molded as a separate piece. We also know he's a collector of Sith artifacts and such, so there's that. I don't see this being likely but you never know. We'll find out lots of nifty things soon enough.

Anyhow, I'm very interested in your thoughts! This is my first topic post here, but I've been a life-long Star Wars fan. :)

    Welcome to the Cantina, skytree.

I don't personally believe that anything was rescued from the Death Star. I mean, how could it? But even if it's possible, I don't think I see the significance. What would that mean to you? That Kylo is the next Palpatine? That doesn't seem to fit what we know of him.

People are determined to link everything to someone...
    Plagueis' staff.
    Lando's son.
    Palpatine's robes...

    Will it ever end?

    Welcome to the Cantina.

The weaving of the two cowls and cloaks is totally different. Ren's has a ribbon almost checkered weave and the Emperor's has much smaller texture.

Also the Death Star was destroyed shortly after the Emperor was tossed down a big hole I have no idea where his body landed but it caused those waves of blue energy . . . that can't be good for fabric.

    Welcome to the Cantina!

The fabric looks different to me - maybe Kylo's sporting his snow cloak here?

That's a fine looking weave; expensive, durable, warm, thick and looks light. Reminds me of a friend's work - she'd make hoodies out of rich old blankets/bed covers for extra coin. Michael Kaplan continues to deliver.

I actually kinda really like this idea, but I do doubt that it's true. Palps was chucked straight into the reactor of the Death Star, I can't see how his cloak survived.

Thanks for warm welcome and well-reasoned feedback, guys! It was just a musing, really, probably about as legitimate in discussing as his lightsaber being a modified Vader lightsaber. But, if one were possible, the other may be, too - maybe his cloak caught on something on the way down but it sounds highly unlikely. My only other pieces of potential evidence were that it might help explain why his hood/cloak is the only tattered bit of his costume, and that he obviously has a penchant for collecting Sith artifacts. But yes, the material does appear different on closer inspection using my larger monitor! My last reach here is that it's someone else's that we didn't hear about in prior cannon, but I think

As a sidenote, I always thought it was baffling that the Emperor was killed so easily. A bit of Force lightning and a high fall killed him off in the end? If a Jedi or Sith can levitate massive objects, seems they could levitate themselves in a pinch, or at least slow themselves down...especially being the most powerful Force wielder in the Galaxy. The Force obviously allows Jedi to perform incredible feats of aerial acrobatics (heck, even Luke somehow survived the fall on Bespin). Always seemed like a bit of a plot hole.

Anyhow, onto the other threads! Thanks for hearing me out kindly and keeping a bit of faith in humanity going. :)

It is interesting that one of the edges is torn. Like it's the selvage that's come unraveled. Kinda like Kylo himself, I guess.

(And welcome to the Cantina, @skytree ).

So Kylo Ren went rummaging around Palp's closet when he was a little 'un?

He has Vader's mask. It's Vader's tattered cape, the remnants from the funeral pyre on Endor. That's why it's tattered and short. He's literally donning the authority of Vader by wearing it. I've made this comment a number of times before in the past few months here and on Reddit. He's a Vader junkie, not an Emperor junkie. Plus, Kylo likely believes he's a descendant of Vader.

Yes I know that Andy Serkis is portraying Snoke but man it would be cool for them to use Palps clothes. He probably had a closet right?

Well Come!!! I too don't think they are the same. I agree with @Pastor Barndog with the checkered look for Kylo....but you never know. Im sure Palpy had a domicile on Coruscant some where along with Vader which you might find spare robes, helmets, respirators etc. It is one thing that has been on my mind, what is the state of Coruscant, the Jedi Temple and his palace?

The emperor fell down into a chasm of power and there was an explosion of energy then... And then the whole death star exploded... I would say that cloak is long gone.

What don't you like? God is in the details, buddy. So is the devil. My point is this: details matter. Every word of dialogue, every planet name, every star cruiser characteristic and military strategy will be analyzed for years and years after the film is released. This is absolutely the appropriate forum for that. Admonishing Star Wars fans to not read into things is ... unrealistic, among other things. Sure, some go too far and are off base and others are more or less accurate. But that actually doesn't matter. There is fun in speculation so don't tell us to "not read into everything." Thanks for saying "please," though. But no thank you.

Let me be clear and say I felt this had about a 10% chance of relevancy upon posting but thought it would be a fun way to say hey. I tried to make that clear in the post. At the very least it's interesting to remember that there may be more Sith artifacts knocking about in TFA, and it may be fun to try and spot them, so this is more of a though experiment than anything. I do not think the cloak is Vader's (the material of which is relatively smooth, not heavily woven).

If anyone would like to shift the direction of the thread, we can talk about how kinda odd it was that the Emperor died so easily by falling and eating a bit of his own Force lightning. Maybe he lost the will to live, heartbroken that Anakin turned from him, as he turned from Padme...? Maybe that shimmery blue light was just his sadness. Poor Palpy. lol

But the odds of that robe being found in that small amount of time puts a large amount of doubt that it would be his... think about it... 3 people knew he went down the shaft, it looks like be blew up with the Death Star.. and anyone that did see his body land on the ground surely wouldnt of grabbed a blood soaked robe when the the station is about o blow up...
