SPECULATION Kylo Ren's New Mask and Saber in VIII?

Like the eyes part of his mask mixed with the triangular nose/mouthpiece of Vader?

 

If there is no concrete proof then there is no reason to assume it was cut in half. There isn't anything that directly suggests it was cut in half. Nothing in the novel either so we will have to wait and see.

I think they wait until he see's Rey again and then he takes it off. Would be a nice moment to reveal his jacked up face.

 

That's as much a part of Star Wars as the opening crawls and having a bad feeling about something! Shame they cut Chewie ripping off UP's arm, your wait would have been over before it started... but at least it would have been light saber free.lol

 

I wonder if he'll try to make her pay for his reconstructive surgery. "You better pony up for my microdermabrasion, scavenger scum!"

 

i suppose the cutting of the Unkar arm thing spared us one too many cantina similarities. i should be grateful for that! : D

 

No but he got a neat scar just like his grandpa Analin Skywalker .

 

I imagine he goes Javier Bardem in Skyfall on her...."Look upon your work".

 

I believe that Ren's helmet and costume will morph to something that has a slight Vader look to it in Ep 8 and even more Vader like in Ep 9. I think it's Disney's way of bringing back the most iconic villain of all time.

 

Not if Hux arrived early with some cvs scar gel.

i dunno ~ they've gone out of their way so far to keep him pretty far from being too much like Vader.

i had a knee-jerk reaction when i first saw the toys: that they were just making a Vader character (fie! no one can replace Vader ~ not ever!). i guess i still have that knee-jerk reaction.

Ren can love Vader all he wants, but i hope he never gets any closer to looking or acting like him.

 

Really...I think he'd be even MORE inclined to hide "Ben Solo" from the Galaxy .

 

I think Ren is afraid that he will never be as strong as Darth Vader

 

by the time this all wraps up, he might be ~ just not in the way he expects. ha!

 

They made a point of him dropping and leaving his helmet and him getting the facial scar. Vader is his idol and he wants to be like him. I think he'll look more like Vader!

 

Re-using/imitating DV's mask is just a silly idea. Kylo is not some ridiculous Vader wannabe imitator. He is admiring Vader because he is his grandfather and while he aspires to emulate him, he doesn't want to superficially imitate him. There is an important difference. Kylo has his own style.

As to his possible future look - here is a concept art from "The Art of Star Wars" book, literally the last page in the book, so it might be something… I personally rather like this concept art a lot…



Reasons to think this might be a later stage concept art that may possibly be foreshadowing ideas thrown around for Kylo's evolved look:

1) this doesn't look like the other (obviously) much earlier production concept designs found the book 2) this looks like Adam Driver 3) there is a sort of a face plate covering one half of the face which directly connects with the events that happened at the end of ep. 7. (although the face plate is on the different side of his face, but for concept art that is common, they could have been playing with different sides to see how it looks) 4) the clothes design seems similar but more cleanly defined and not rough like the ones in ep. 7. I like this better. 5) the new sabre looks to be with a new crystal and it by the way also very cool design (according to the novel the old saber was cut into, destroyed by Rey) 6) Adam Driver hated wearing the mask. They will try to think about something to avoid it.

I don't think they will give Kylo a new mask. (Since the helmet should have been destroyed as he left it on the catwalk on Starkiller base).

Also he doesn't need it anymore. I think the mask represented his duality and being unstable. He was wearing the mask because his face is very opposite of what he wants to project. Now with the scar there will be no need.

Importantly, Adam Driver hated wearing a mask and moreover it will be a huge waste of his acting talent to have him wear a mask any further. What they wanted to accomplish with the helmet/mask they already did in TFA...They will move on from that I think and have us see Kylo's emotions as they would be rather important going forward...

I don't think he lost a hand in the duel (he seemed to have both hand intact at the end) so this concept art could be based on an earlier idea of him losing a limb. It is a tradition after all with all Skywalkers to have a hand chopped off...and this may happen in ep. 8 as is the tradition (each Skywalker loses arm/hand in the second film). But again, this is a concept art.

The sword has to be different as firstly, it was broken by Rey, second, the crossguard hilt was explained to be due to the crystal being cracked ("the lateral extensions on Ren's lightsaber are not cross guards, but in fact exhaust ports for the excess heat of the unstable weapon. "), etc. and was supposed to also reflect his unstable character...Also, the unsophisticated self-made design will have to change as now that Snoke will finally complete his training, at least the plasma will be stable...
It seems logical that he will have a new lightsaber...I like his current lightsaber a lot, but because of the explanation for the exhaust ports, which are also explained to be due to the unstable design and also as it appeared to be destroyed by Rey (confirmed by novelization as well) it seems unlikely he will keep the same design.. If he keeps the design it has to be with a new stable crystal,.In the very least, even if the design is the same (very likely) the plasma will be stable and the crystal replaced (i.e. not cracked).

Maybe he will somehow get hold of Vader's saber and re-use the crystal...?I read somewhere that in Aftermath there is a passage that seems to allude to finding Vader's sabre:

"A Kubaz merchant sells what he claims to be Darth Vader’s weapon to three mysterious figures – two in black robes, and one a pale, young woman who speaks in strained whispers. He activates the crimson blade to demonstrate its authenticity.
The merchant asks who they are, and the woman responds “We are adherents. Acolytes of the Beyond.” He asks for assurance that they won’t kill him with the weapon once they buy it, and she says “We are not violent. Not yet.” She adds that they want to destroy the lightsaber “so that it can be returned to its master in death.”
After the exchange, the seller admits to his assistant that he doesn’t know whether the laser sword truly belonged to Vader."​

As I haven't read the novel, I don't know, but this was pointed out by someone on discussion boards, and I thought it's worthwhile to copy it...


In any case, I like this concept art a lot. It is more "clean", more refined...It will fit him.

 

i don't think his face was cut up so bad as to warrant plating ~ that would be an odd choice: the metal draws more attention than a scar would and doesn't serve a medical purpose.

but i do agree that he should come back with less of a need for a full-time mask. he might still wear one in battle (because it's scary and it is protective headgear, after all).

however much Driver hated the mask, he'd wear it for the job regardless, but i do agree it's a waste of his talents to keep him under it all the time.

i'll be sad if he loses the cranky crossguard saber. it's so "him". but i suppose he will have to evolve.

I also think the scar is probably a superficial one and will just mirror Anakin's slight scar in PT #2 and not really warranting a face plate...This is just a concept art idea apparently and something they have been playing with obviously, but it is also interesting that it does connect to what happened in the film (saber broken, face scarred on one side...) But I'm pretty sure that going on he will be wearing a mask much less...BTW some recently released visual effects revealed that in the scene where Snoke tells Kylo about the droid being on Han's ship Kylo was actually filmed without the mask. They made an effort to then add the mask digitally (which must have cost a lot).


I suspect they wanted to limit on purpose Kylo's taking off his mask only twice in the movie deliberately for greater impact - once for Rey and then for Han...That's why I suspect they also deleted that scene with Kylo on the Falcon where he is supposedly also maskless...



Notably, the newest toys released for Kylo are also maskless...
