I really liked L3! I thought it was great that the others kind of tolerated her. That was good stuff. I hope it was supposed to be somewhat tongue in cheek parody, because that's how I thought of her.

She wasn't no K2, but she was fun.

SJW is a dog whistle term. Say what you really mean. Dont hide behind a term.

As for L3 she is just one of many droids throughout Star Wars that are given human like qualities. They arent just robots. The have human personalities. Characters in the movies have treated them as more then just tools. Luke got very upset when R2 was damaged in Star Wars. C3PO was more then just a translator. He expressed fear and doubt and would get frightened. We had droids in ROTJ that literally tortured other droids. BB8 is basically Poe's best friend/dog. K2 was a smart ass and certainly expressed himself as an equal.

As for L3 expressing some awful liberal ideas. Oh my she expresses she wants equal rights (yeah us liberals wanting equal rights for all), but even Lando rolls his eyes when she says that.

I (and most people, I guess) use this term to describe the obnoxious and tactless part of liberals. Those, who, for example, shove their ideology in other people's faces all the time. Very unpleasant type.

But please, let's not go deeper into this.

Nope. Sorry it is used as a dog whistle. If there is some obnoxious and tactless liberal agenda forced into Star Wars then people should say it. They shouldnt hide behind a dog whistle term. If someone doesnt like a female lead then say it. If someone doesnt like a diverse cast that represents the world we live in then they should say it. They shouldnt say Disney has a SJW agenda for Star Wars unless they want to say what it is. I say they dont because they dont way to say they are against women, people of color or other races, etc.

To me L3 comes off as a character written as a satirical parody of all those types of people but played by an actress who thought it was completely serious.

I just told you how I understand the term. Straight up, no dog whistles.

I don't think there is one. Not to the point that I would find annoying, at least. Perhaps there are nuggets of social commentary here and there, which I may or may not agree with. That's normal. But I wasn't even talking about agenda, you're putting words in my mouth. I was talking about people and their behaviour. L3 reminds me of said type of people, that's all. Not a big deal. Nothing wrong about the equal droid rights thing, it's fine on that scale. Blade Runner 2049 is about the same issue, essentially. Artificial entities wanting equal rights. Not for a second have I thought about SJW watching that movie, though.

Now you're starting to get on my nerves, because you're assuming way too much. We're not talking about female leads, there's no need to bring it up or suggest I have a problem with that.

Please, stop... You seem oversensitive about the subject. You're jumping to all those things all of a sudden - "females!" "diverse cast!" - for no reason at all.

If you would like to continue to continue the conversation, please take it a PM. I know there is more to say, either about the character or political and social related subjects, but it's not going to go well if you two are shooting off responses like this.

Dont mean to lump you in with them, but all I am saying is dont use their term. It makes you sound like won of them. Like we shouldnt substitute alt-right for white supremacist. Make them spell out what is really what they are saying.

New info: Lord and Miller came up with L3 and they DID imagine her as SJW warrior as an answer to "We don't serve their kind here."

L3 was for me, the biggest misstep in the movie.

It was never really believable for me. It didn't work.

Really liked Solo though, a great time at the movies.

They always said the Falcon is a character.
Now it truly is, when you have L3 inside the computer for it.

It explains why the Falcon always seems to find it's way to where it needs to be for a fight....

This is a suggestion I've given to my fellow staffers about comments on a blog (sadly not applicable) containing 'SWJ', 'shill' and other similar words heard on the Internet and repeated so often that they've lost any meaning and don't contribute to any meaningful discussion.

Replace those words with 'BANANA' and if you are imaginative enough - in minion voice.

    banana.gif

Examples: 'Shut up, you Disney BANANA!' or 'KK is inserting BANANA agenda in Star Wars!' It makes more sense, it's funnier and makes people actually think with their own minds.

    Try it, it works.

I kinda liked L3-37 as a sort of IG-88 lite. I think if they'd made her nearly as cold-blooded as Iggy (or HK-47), the film's tone would've been waaay off.

Was it perfect? I don't think so.

Lately, I'd agree that Disney seems to try to make droids the comic relief. It works pretty well sometimes with stuff like BB-8 in TFA, K2-SO, and arguably chopper. Stuff like BB-8 in TLJ and L3-37 can be a little more divisive.

I think it's clear that R2-D2 is one of the most marketable characters in film history, and they may be trying to catch lightening in a bottle again. Personally, I don't think they've ever come close (not even with TFA's BB-8) but at the same time I don't mind terribly much. So far, I do like all the droids they've brought to the screen.

I do worry, though- eventually, if every droid we meet has their restraining bolt removed and has some quirky personality, then that quickly becomes the norm instead of the exception. The next time we get an original droid, I hope it's very different than what we have so far. Something like AP-5's "Marvin the Paranoid Android" take could be kinda fun on the big screen, for instance- but even then, it's just a bit too human.

I definitely agree about the concern of every robot being quirky and normalizing R2D2 and the rest.

I mean, K2 and L3 are almost identical, with L3 just being a bit of a one-upper in terms of over the top attitude...

Wait, take a look at those names again. K2... L3...

We're going to see M4 next, aren't we? And it'll be the wackiest and most out of control droid yet!

Okay if they do that, I will absolutely give them a tip of the cap for the consistency gag if it doesn't take over the whole movie.

I don't know that I would call her a parody. She felt to me like she was truly passionate about the treatment of droids, to a fault. Like one of those people who feel passionately about some subject and find a way to throw it into every conversation and you just want to say "Please stop bringing that up everyone knows about how you feel about X but it's really getting old." But her demeanor was a good foil in that she wasn't overly-serious, but lighthearted and her rants were for the most part mixed with the same lighthearted demeanor so it didn't come off as abrasive, but more as throwing continual knowing jabs.

I thought she was a well-realized character, a unique addition to the droid "family" of Star Wars. To me she was funny and in the Star Wars universe, I thought her position on droid rights was practical and I would probably be on her side of the ethical debate. I just wouldn't be so forward and constant about it but in the end I'd probably be like "I'm not sure we should be treating droids this way."

I'm not sure what the writers may have intended with the character, but I usually am more attentive to what these things mean to me, as opposed to what they may or may not mean to the writers. I presume most writers know that once they release their vision to me, I'm going to form my own understanding of it - even if it conflicts with theirs.

I would love to see L3 and K-2SO interact.

    Actually I might ship this.

They could be the next great love/hate couple XD
