Alec was the glue in the original Star Wars, without his acting talents, we wouldn't even be here.

And Ian, a fantastic actor in his own right, although he was burderned with the PT, he still turned in a fabulous performance.

The most memorable PT moments (there were a few) pretty much all came from him.

For TFA, JJ had this rare kind of talent in Max Von Sydow, yet for some bizarre reason, chose to ax him early in the film.

Then there was this void left. No worldclass actor (Ford at this stage of the game doesn't quite fit the bill) in a Star Wars film anymore.

Did this absence of a veteran, pedigreed actor harm the film?

I tend to think that it did. TFA's badly needed a Guinness/Mcdiarmid/Sydow and he just wasn't there.

    Discuss. :)

Absolutely. I think Lor San Tekka was definitely a character we could have seen evolve, and I probably would have enjoyed that much more than 50% of what we got with Han Solo. I think this film was unfortunately a little overwhelmed by trying to do too much, and please too many in a short period of time.
