I did not get the impression that he was banging the 'bot. He over-emotes when the droid gets blown up but apart from her delusions I didn't sense anything real. Not sure when this pansex thing came from? Is it canon?

It's from some interview of Jonathan Kasdan. It's up to you whether it's canon.

I know it's not spelt out, but I really did get the vibe that L3 and Lando have some term of, let's say physical rather than sexual relationship, in addition to Lando having feelings for her.

-L3 complaining her joints are sore and Lando "needs to do that thing again"--she's basically asking for a massage, so they have that kind of relationship.
-Quira asks if droid-human relationships are possible, physically, and L3 says yes--"it works." She seems to be speaking from experience. The subtext is the unspoken "trust me."
-L3 suspects Lando is in love with her, with the implication she is correct. She says she sees the same signs Lando exhibits towards herself in Han towards Quira, which she ends up basically being correct about. So she is socially ept enough to know when a guy is in love with someone. She's a droid, but she is as emotionally intelligent as any person, I mean she is a person.

But she says that she doesn't feel the same way about Lando. Which she feels a bit awkward about. So, they essentially have a "friends with benefits" type of relationship, but as often is the case in those types of arrangements one of them is becoming a bit more attached than the other, and this is bringing a soft amount of tension. I thought this was a great and mature handling of any relationship in the film, it was just treated with the same complexity and maturity as the human relationships. It's not spelt out and beat over the head. But yeah, L3 and Lando are physical, and Lando has feelings towards her. Read the film, guys!

I wish they would have kept Lando out of the movie except until the end for the cameo. They wrote his character only to be a stepping stone/vessel for Han. Outside of that, he was just a set piece for the crowd to say, "hey, it's Lando".

Instead of adding more depth to Calrissian, they only cared about his sexuality. Just leave him out of the movie and maybe he'll get his own with a director that gives a damn.

    I could see that.

The people who disliked it seemed to be more mad about retconning than him banging robots. That's already possible in our current world, so it wouldn't be surprising if he did. He also might not have been all that interested in banging droids either.

People and their preferences change overtime. Young Lando was probably just hornier.

Most SW fans, or at least the ones that play the games and read the books, are already aware about sex with alien species. So, those who were angry with this tidbit would've flipped out eventually. Fans who were aware were annoyed at reconning, which is a common nitpick in fandoms and is a different criticism.

Can attraction to a droid be considered pansexuality? Or would it be a paraphilia?

Can a droid be considered to have a gender? Is it defined purely by their voice synthesis?

I suppose if they are thinking, sentient beings, then I suppose it's possible for them to develop a gender identity.

Makes me think back to that silver service droid that welcomes Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan at the start of Phantom Menace. It had a female voice, but has the appearance of a 'male' protocol droid.

I'm not so sure about that. Can a machine truly consent? Looks like abuse to me. Lando is setting a bad example for little boys everywhere.

Not sure why Jon Kasdan Jr even took the bait on the original question and then doubling down on Twitter. If I never read his comments, I would have interpreted Lando/L3 relationship as something like Lando and a pet. I know the way my friends are attached to their dog or cat is special bond.

Whilst I don't agree the whole 'pansexual' idea is even in the movie beyond a daft joke, I don't see why it even matters? David Bowie was a caped-spaceman sexual-calavier product of the 70s who had sex with anyone and everyone irrespective of gender and the world loved him. Why is it a bad thing to put Lando Calrissian at Bowie's level of carefree indulgence? People scream 'SJW' like no one in the world considered themselves sexually liberated before, what, 2015, but Bowie was just an interplanetary rockstar of love, over *40 years* before "SJW" was even a term that existed, why is that not cool to put Lando at the same level?

I'd buy Lando's albums for sure!
