I haven't seen this movie in decades even though I own it as part of a Blu Ray set that has a couple other classics, Soylent Green and Logan's Run. I last saw it long before I ever read the book so I didn't realize until this time it was an adaptation (although a very loose one) of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend". It's stupid and a weird in 70s horror/action/exploitation movie kind of way but entertaining for those reasons as well.

    Jurassic Park: World Dominion

So I went last night to my discretion. I was basically dragged to it. I loved the first movie, liked the second and every one after was just, meh...and this one was no exception, imo. How it made the money it made over the weekend surprises me, but then again I helped take there I guess. It was good see the old gang Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern, but in the grand scope of the movie it means nothing. It was chock full of call backs and general remember this kind of moments, etc. I found it annoying, really. The whole movie was just a straight dive bomb into terrible.

    Top Gun: Maverick.

It's a "yup". Dumb as a pile of rocks at times and clearly a(nother) Tom Cruise vehicle, but very well done.

...and I got Jennifer Connelly in a scene with Bowie (and then T-Rex) playing in the background, so it's a clear win for me!

As a child of the 80s I grew up on a steady diet of Rambo but these days I'm of the opinion they should have just stopped after the first. I mean I know Rambo II is an 80s action classic and it's enjoyable in a nostalgic/silly way but it's an awful continuation of the story. Probably just should have been a new character/franchise for Stallone than a sequel to First Blood. In the first movie he's a sympathetic and tragic character but frightening and flawed, in the second he's just your musclebound action hero cutout.

I liked the film fine, even though I’m not a huge JP fan and this was the least Jurassic Park-feeling film in the franchise. (JP1 and JW:FK being the only previous ones I really connected with).

I like me some dinosaurs in my James Bond/Jason Bourne/Mission Impossible type movies, and some human character arcs and proper plot in my dinosaur movies, so JW: Dominion (and JW:FK) fit me quite well.

Also, a big plus for the return of all the oldie-time characters and actors.

There were a lot of Indiana Jones visual references, sometimes paired with John William-esque music to drive home the point. And, there was an Indiana Solo character, and she was raaaaaad! (But, of course, fans are gonna hate her… and fling their poop around).

If I have to criticize the film in any way, I found JW: D a bit long and busy, and the writing is frequently very convenient, but all right; these are dino films for kids anyway, so… Not a world-shaking movie experience, but it was fun, warm, and interesting. I liked it.

This is an excellent film, much more of a drama than an action movie. The second and third are just horribles, unfortunately.

Yep. It was a whole bunch of boring 'bad scientists' stuff with a few good dino scenes mixed in.
I agree. It's your typical Tom Cruise movie but ---- with a dynamite screenplay. IMHO, it was so good it brought back memories of some of the classic action-adventure flicks from the 1980s. Definitely a film you want to experience on the Big Screen.

The book is really great, although kind of violent, and from what I understand was sometimes on school reading curriculums before the films came along. They definitely toned down Rambo for the movie, his mental state is much worse in the book and while still sympathetic he is criminally insane and does some indefensible things.

It's funny (or sad) but Stallone's other big franchise, Rocky, was kind of the same way. The first two movies are great are more drama than sports/guy movies but then you get to Rocky III and it's Eye Of The Tiger and Mr. T. time. Rocky III and IV are still fun/cheesy 80s sports movies but much different tone than the first 2.

Old Henry ~ a Western about a farmer who takes in an injured man with a satchel of cash

I love Westerns as long as they are good and at the moment they are a dying breed. But this one is a good even if it isn't face paced, but it doesn't have to be. It also has a little twist I didn't see coming. Definitely worth a watch

I've seen this movie I don't know how many times since childhood but I just noticed something for the first time. I don't think it was necessarily intentional because it's not until the lame sequel that it makes any sense and I don't think they did it purposefully there either. But there's a funny scene in the first game of the season where Willy is the first up to bat and Bob Uecker tells the radio audience that some people believe you can predict a team's whole season from the first at bat... during which Willy tries to check his swing, accidentally bunts and barely makes it on base. Only to get tagged out during his lead off for falling for the old "your shoes are untied". I don't know but I think that was supposed to be the entirety of the joke, the little Ooops when he accidentally hits it then getting tagged out. Basically just shows how bad they are and fans don't have any reason to be optimistic. But then it turns out the season ends with them barely squeaking into the playoffs by beating the Yankees in a one game playoff (which is the climax of the movie) only to blow it in one of the early rounds off-screen as you learn in the sequel. So that at bat did pretty well encapsulate their entire season. I don't think the sequel was necessarily thinking that either, I think they had them lose because you don't want them winning the World Series off screen and it's easier to do a lazy sequel if they're still sort of losers instead of champions.

    Thor: Bleh and Meander

Thor has literally become a joke. This movie is a straight up comedy with no real substance. Ragnarok at least had some balance and real moments while L and T has mainly just comedy even in the oddest moments. I didn't like it and most people I watched it with laughed, but had no real good things to say about it. Imo, it's gone too far in the wrong directions.

    Thor: Love and Thunder ⚡

What a ridiculously awesome flick! I loved it! :D

Not only is it sweet and funny and dramatic, with character presence, too, it is a super hero movie with something to say, with an actual message and a great villain with heart and meaning! So many of these have been just Transformers-reskin, stupid bad guy of the week in need of crushing, CGI spectacles, but T:L&T is an actual movie!

Great stuff. Sorry to all you haters

Song in this scene made the whole movie worth watching.

Movies I've seen since the last update:

    The Karate Kid (1984)
    upload_2022-7-13_18-48-57.jpeg
The Karate Kid is one of those movies that I feel like I saw as a kid, but I don't remember really seeing outside of the main iconic scenes. I remember seeing the remake though. It wasn't good, but I didn't hate it. Still, this movie blows it out of the water. The Karate Kid (1984) is one of those movies that's as close to perfection as a movie can be. It achieves virtually everything it set out to do. 10/10.

    Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Sonic 2 was a wild ride when I saw it in theaters. There are so many locations and things going on that it loses a bit of focus, but some of the best stuff in the movie comes out of these moments. I laughed until I cried, and I had a blast all throughout. It's a pretty simple movie, but it achieves its goals. If you liked the first one and are a fan of the character/franchise, you'll love this one. 9/10.

    Top Gun (1986)
    upload_2022-7-13_18-52-19.jpeg
I saw the first Top Gun in preparation for Maverick and because it had been on my list of classics to see for a while. This movie...was okay. It really isn't that great, but it's a classic and I liked the parts of it that I assume most people like. It reminded me of the time when I was a kid when I wanted to join the Airforce. (Yes, I know they're Navy pilots, but there are still fighter jets, so the feelings are similar.) I did get a massive kick out of the homoerotic subtext though. 7/10.

    Trading Places (1983)
    upload_2022-7-13_18-54-22.jpeg
I have a lot of feelings about this movie. It's not a bad concept, and I like the characters, but I watched this at a bad time (right around the time Kenobi released, to give some context on what was happening in the US), and the racism and rampant homophobia have NOT aged well. I liked the love story though. As is the case with nearly every Eddie Murphy movie I watch with my parents, they didn't remember or never saw the uncut/explicit version, so they were shocked at some of the vulgarity in the movie. I wanted more romance and more business out of the movie, weirdly enough, and I wanted to see Dan's character have one final scene with his "friends" after the climax, if only because I'm petty. 6.5/10

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)

This is the superior multiverse movie. It was bold and audacious, expansive, intimate, fun, funny, heartbreaking, heartwarming, nihilistic, optimistic, and pretty much everything in between. This movie healed my infected wound caused by Multiverse of Madness, because in a way, this is the movie Multiverse of Madness should have been. I understand why MoM wasn't this crazy, but we clearly missed out. My dad didn't like this movie, to say the least, since he doesn't care for teenage/young adult romance stories. (He's a black, mid-sixties man. It makes sense.) Still, I'd rank it among the best movies I've seen this year, if not one of the best. It's a classic in the making. 10/10.

Doctor Strange & the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
    upload_2022-7-13_19-3-47.jpeg
...and that wound that was healing reopened with my third viewing of this movie, this time with my parents. In my reaction review, I talked about how I wanted this movie to grow on me...it didn't. It's just worsened in my head. Still, I was ready to let my revision of the movie stay unfinished, but seeing it a third time and so soon after Everything Everywhere All At Once just made me want to rewrite this movie all over again.* After seeing this with my parents, I understand why the movie is the way it is - you have to make the multiverse plotline simple enough for casual fans and kids to understand what's going on, after all - but it doesn't erase my disappointment. I'm still hopeful this movie will grow on me, but it's not looking very optimistic. If you're going to see one multiverse-themed movie this year, make it Everything Everywhere All At Once. My parents really liked this movie though, so there's that. 7/10.

    Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
I was not expecting this movie to be nearly as good as it was. I wasn't expecting myself to be dying to see it again, but Top Gun Maverick is a phenomenal movie. It's easily one of the best of the year. It's action packed, heartfelt (FAR more than the original), and fun. I was watching this and thinking "I want a Star Wars movie exactly like this! Just give me dogfights and combat training! ...and one lightsaber because you have to have one, but that's it!" I have some minor quibbles, but they're just that, minor. Overall, definitely one of the best movies of the year. 9.5/10.

    Red Notice (2021)
    upload_2022-7-13_19-11-6.jpeg
I went into this movie amused that all three actors have been in DC movies (with two of them currently in DC movie roles while one has switched to Marvel) and all of them having been in the Fast & Furious franchise at some point or another. (Ryan Renolds is a minor but important character in Hobb's & Shaw.) Heck, it got to the point where I was thinking this could have EASILY worked as a Hobbs and Shaw spinoff. The third act ruined that in the best of ways, but it was a fun adventure all the same. Dwayne is a charismatic dude, and Ryan is a charming dude, but for some reason, the two didn't actually have a lot of chemistry with each other or with Gal Gadot. The script was super weak at times too. Funny, but weak. Overall, this is a nice "popcorn and wine" film, but I wouldn't go further. I do want to see a sequel though. 7.5/10.

    Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
    upload_2022-7-13_19-15-12.jpeg
My initial thoughts still ring true. This is a good but not great Thor film, and a nice blend of the heart and drama of the first two movies with the humor of the third. Waititi was able to play around a bit more this time, as is seen in the black-and-white fight scene. Gorr was one of the best MCU villains in a LONG while, probably since Shang-Chi last year and Thanos before that. He was creepy, understandable, and threatened Thor in an interesting way. I do wish there was more done with Valkyrie and that Loki was in this movie though, and I think the theme of fatherhood would not have been out of place here. At the end of the day, I still like it better than Ragnarok, but I do think Ragnarok is the better movie. 8.25/10.

For those who are looking for a list of my current top first-watched movies this year, in no particular order it's:
    Thunderball (1965)
    Karate Kid (1984)
    The Batman (2022)
Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
    Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
    Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
(If you want to pad the list, add Encanto, the first Musashi film, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Death on the Nile)

Right now, I'm trying to get through the ballet performance of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake on YouTube, but ballet isn't my forte, and it's not really holding me at this time. I'll watch it in bits and pieces, most likely.

Upcoming movies I'm looking forward to:
    Bullet Train (2022)
Lady Snowblood (1973) - I really need to finish this one
    The Hidden Fortress (1959)
    The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

*I actually got a good chunk of the way through, about halfway through the second act, but then my computer shut down and I lost my progress.

I love Hitchcock but somehow I've never gotten around to this one.... yet somehow I did find time to watch the not-Hitchock directed, straight-to-Showtime, The Birds 2: Lands End. Anyway it was amazing, 99.9% of the movie is restricted to a single room and people having conversations in it but somehow I was riveted.

    A few I've recently watched.

JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS
    upload_2022-8-5_14-10-33.png

This movie right here is jaw-droppingly brilliant. The shear artistic prowess is astounding. The entire movie is a mental effect of climbing into a regular car and finding out you're actually somehow in an Indy car as you're thrust back into your seat and just holding on to your butt until the ride ends.
This movie altered the way I think about movies.

    JUNGLE CRUISE
    upload_2022-8-5_14-11-7.png

    First Act: Great!
Second Act: $%^&ing kill me, please!
    Third Act: meh.

    LOST CITY
    upload_2022-8-5_14-11-31.png

When you're deciding to retire because you're absolutely burnt out...maybe don't take on "one last movie" as Bullock did.
This whole movie drips with Bullock's drab flatness the whole way through, which is surprising as she's almost always a very vivid actor.
Everything in her body language screamed just phoning it in and didn't want to be there. So much so that I had to go look up what the heck was up with her after finishing it.
The changes to the screenplay that were just shoved into it at her request without rewriting the whole story also hurt it a lot as it no longer made any lick of sense.
There's a great remake of Romancing the Stone buried somewhere in here. Unfortunately, that's exactly where it is - buried.

    HITMAN'S WIFE'S BODYGUARD

Just bloody good fun. Solid, solid movie making and great writing.
It's exactly how it should be and I can't think of one thing that should be different. It was just a pure ride of enjoyment the whole way through.

This summarizes how I felt watching it...

It just didn't work for me at all. Everything felt very flat, directionless, and unmotivated.

    Neat movie, but horribly written.
Its whole backstory tangent is entirely unneeded and just drags the movie down.
Unfortunately, this expository dialogue vomiting backstory format is REALLY popular in movies right now.
Oh well. Great visual sequences, as always with Marvel.

A fantastic spiritual sequel to IDIOCRACY, except the ending just fell apart in the final 15ish minutes.
Just needed to end much earlier than it did and with a different tone. Ending with effectively three separate endings, two of which were comedic (read: corny) completely knee-capped the story's entire spiritual point.

I haven't really watched a lot of the good movies on my to-do list yet, so hoping eventually to get through a lot more that I didn't get to from 2021 yet.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

13 Lives ~ Watched on Amazon about a rescue mission in Thailand where a group of boys and their soccer coach are trapped in a system of underground caves that are flooding.

At first I was shocked at how we learn nothing about the boys once they enter the cave. But then it makes sense because that's basically how it really was. It was a really well acted movie and pretty good
