Flåklypa Grand Prix (1975) from Norway - a very interesting artifact from the past. It's stop-motion cartoon with hand-made props and puppets, with a ton of effort put into the small details. The main pacing and dialogue are (scandinavishly?) slow and the race turned out to be very exciting. It also seems like, the inventing bits could have inspired Wallace and Grommit, while the way how the race plays out definately seems like a source of "inspiration" for The Phantom Manace. Still, even if today's kids might not really appreciate it due to pacing, it's still a product of love, that deserves watching.

You're spot on about the pacing, @Jack_Forest :) And glad you liked it! It's very Norwegian in style and culture, self-parodically so, even. I have no idea how they translate the gags and such into English, but in Norwegian there are tons of puns and gags and funny references and such. Also, the film is slightly racist nowadays, but what 70s piece of art isn't? ;) As for The Phantom Menace, it would be funny if George Lucas had borrowed from this film, but it is probably more a case of similar thematic inspiration. Interestingly, Flåklypa/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix holds a significantly higher IMDB score than TPM :p

I watched it with subs, translated to our languare from English (but with the original names), so whatever references there were I've either missed them or didn't know what to look for :). I am also not really sensitive.
They're also making sequels, so it is a lot like a Norwegian Wallace and Grommit. Do Norwegian kids watch this... franchise?

"Loving Vincent" amazing to see a feature film animated entirely through painting, good story too

Yes, it's become a franchise in later years. I haven't seen any of them actually, but they are more kid shows, I think, than the puns- and satire family film approach of the original.

this was just fascinating, both because of the execution and the story, which i had not heard of before as apparently it's more recent research into what really happened. completely spellbinding.

Unsane - This movie drove me insane waiting, waiting, waiting for a possible twist. It's about a woman who is kind of having a hard time about her stalker and goes to a mental institution to talk about her feelings, but gets involuntarily admitted. And that's where the craziness begins. Turns out her stalker followed her there and also now is employed there too. But is she nuts or is this real? I won't say, but it kept me intrigued at times to find out. Most of the time it was boring and slow too.

    The Chaser

A South Korean thriller featuring topics for adults. Great cinematography and feel of pacing. The structure of the story wasn't that satisfiying for me though.

I know they’re not amazing movies, but whenever Time Cop and Money Train come on the telly I watch them. Don’t ask me why I like them because I haven’t got a clue!

It's still a good thing that you have your own distinct stuff for kids and don't have to rely on Hollywood all the time.

Oh, 70% of our kids stuff is from Hollywood, if you count overdubbed teen shows and Norwegian versions of Sesame Street, or whatever. Probably 25% is BBC stuff, the rest being Scandinavian productions. Fun story, but back in the Cold War era we got a huge amount of children's TV from countries beyond the Iron Curtain (Czech Republic and Romania, I think); great puppeteering work over there! :)

Ant-Man and the Wasp. Really liked it. Lots of great laughs. One could think that shrinking/size manipulation is a boring superpower, however this film has arguably the coolest and most inventive action sequences out of all Marvel movies. I also like the dynamic between Scott, Hope and Hank. It's particularly cool to have Douglas as Hank throughout the whole thing, since it's so common that the mentor figure dies or has not much to do.

It was a feast to look at, fantastic to look at and amazing that they pulled it off. The story to me treated him as very human, didn't try to make a myth out of him. A one of a kind movie.

In theory it is boring. Which is why it was so long before we ever got Ant-Man. What makes it not-boring is the nature of it being a unique power never seen on screen yet. So it can be, as you wisely put, innovative and cool with it's action.

I watched three VERY different movies yesterday with my best friend.

    1. Venom - Venom is NOT a good superhero movie. It's nonsensical, not very funny, and all the characters are unsympathetic. That doesn't mean I didn't have a good time. I laughed at the absurdity and stupidity of the movie. I laughed at how bad this movie is. It's so bad it kinda circles back to being good again. I'd recommend watching on DVD when drunk, but don't bother seeing it in theaters. Tom Hardy was great though, and the soundtrack had its moments.

    2. Solo - This was my third time through Solo but my best friend's first time seeing the movie. He really enjoyed it! I appreciated the soundtrack even more, but that was all the extra info I gleaned out of it this time. Still a great movie.

    3. You Might Be the Killer - I HATE horror/thriller movies, but after reading the hilarious Twitter exchange between Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig the day after it came out and then hearing they made that exchange into a movie, I knew I HAD to see it. It was funny, bloody, a little subversive, and a LOT of fun. I loved the cameos too Pencils and Parsecs fans where you at?). This is a movie I highly recommend. Was it perfect? Nope. But it was fun.

Once Upon A Time In The West This is a seriously good western & once again a great score. Also Henry Fonda makes a great bad guy.
Also I really really want one of those Duster Jackets :).

In my opinion the second best western after "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

    Memories of Murder

A South Korean thriller featuring true events. IMO the second best Korean movie after Oldboy (which is one of my most favorite movies of all time). This movie is truly amazing. An intriguing and exciting story, good cinematography and nice acting. The ending of the movie is probably one of the most memorable endings I've ever seen.

    Bedevilled
Again another South Korean movie, but unfortunately not as good as the other Korean movies I've watched quite recently.

The Ninth Gate - I think it's great. The premise for the story is very interesting and I dig the whole occult/mystery vibe of it. It's also nice to watch Depp playing a regular dude, as opposed to some kind of weirdo. :p Wonderful score by Wojciech Kilar is certainly worth mentioning too.
