Jumanji: Next Level. It's pretty much the same, as the last one. But Karen Gillan is in it, so I'm good.

Taking advantage of the down time and watched everything Kurosawa on Criterion.
Man never missed. Mifune is right up there with greatest actors. Just raw energy and draws you in

I See You - Starring Helen Hunt about a strange things going on in the town when two boys becoming missing. Helen Hunt is having marriage trouble with her Detective husband and doesn't get along with her teen son. Then suddenly weird things begin happening in the house. Things missing, strange noises and so on.

This movie was bizarre and puzzling at first. Then at 45 minutes they begin to show what the strange things are going on in the house. Then I thought ok...what now? What does this have to do with two boys missing? Without giving things away and in case you haven't seen it yet. The strange things that were going on in the house leads to the real crazy thing that's happened in town.

There are a couple of things that don't make sense and Helen Hunt at one point completely disappears for awhile. It was engaging, sloppy at times, left without some explanations. But wasn't too bad.

Rambo:Last Blood - This movie felt like the movie Taken(but it isn't) except with Rocky who moved to Arizona adopted a daughter lived with a maid, adopted daughter runs away looking for real father in Mexico, He rejects her, she gets kidnapped, Rocky looks for her, gets his arse kicked, she dies he turns into a psycho and kills everybody. This movie doesn't breathe and it's only like an 1hr 1/2 long.

    Rocky goes Insane:Last Blood

The Descent - I'm not much of a horror movie buff but decided to watch this and it came out in 2005. After one woman's husband and kid dies in a horrible car accident her and her friends come to North Carolina to go spelunking in an unknown cave. The woman who had the accident seems to be able to sort of sense things after he accident. Not like she's some psychic but she just has a problem psychologically.

Turns out two of the women lied as they thought they were going to one cave but go to a completely different one in which they get lost and cannot find their way out as they go deeper into it. One of the women thinks she sees daylight, but instead falls into a hole where she breaks her leg so bad her bone is sticking out.

They decide to take her up little ways to a spot that when they get there is full of bones. And that's when things get crazy. The woman who had the accident at the beginning starts seeing those weird creatures first laughing and other weird stuff, but no one believes her. These creatures are albino creepy old school vampire crawly freaky looking things. Scary...

So for the first about an hour it is slow and drags really. I found it boring until they meet the creatures and actually cheered for the creatures to bring some kind of fun to this boring movie. And they didn't disappoint.

So I just watched Prospect, a shoestring-budget indie sci-fi film starring Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher.

    OK, well, I loved it.

But I'll say it's not going to be for everyone. It's a sparse, character-driven movie that is a lot like a short story or a play. No laser fights or anything flashy. It's not full of action, but what action there is is brutal and scary. The story is driven by a very wild west conflict—man versus man on the “Fringe” of civilization, man versus unforgiving nature (the moon's atmosphere contains toxic dust so everyone must wear space suits and breathe with filters. Probably not the best movie to watch during the pandemic, but oh well). The tension is constant since there is also a ticking clock.

I have to mention the world-building for this thing--meticulous detailed thought was put into creating this dirty, analog world that feels very lived in. (Check out this brochure made up for the mining expeditions.) It brings to mind the starkness of ANH. Everything feels old, used, and like it's patched up with gum, duct tape, and a couple of paperclips. The score is amazing too--so haunting.

It does what good sci-fi does: makes us think about what it means to be human, what it means to live among other humans, and what codes we agree to live by in our civilizations.

I’ve read a lot of reviews that call this a found family story. It is, but it isn’t. I don’t think Ezra is a replacement dad for Cee.

Cee’s arc in the story is a coming-of-age arc, in which she comes into her own after being under her father’s thumb. By the end, she proves to be the most capable character in the story. She might not be a physical badass, but her resourcefulness, clear-mindedness, and her well of inner calm save the day, as well as her and Ezra’s lives a number of times over.

Pedro Pacal is amazing in this movie—I can’t think of another actor with the charisma to play off the morally complex but charming miner, Ezra.

Cee is actually a harder character to understand if you don’t remember being a resentful teenager. Cee keeps her anger well tamped down though, and most of what you see as a viewer is the reserve she wraps herself in. That’s a hard role to play for Sophie Thatcher since Cee often comes across as emotionless, and you have to work to see the nonverbals and nuances of what the actress is doing.

The most moving scenes in this movie to me highlight these aspects of Cee’s character. These two scenes are juxtaposed to great effectiveness.

When Ezra’s arm becomes infected from the poisonous atmosphere, it starts to rot and must be amputated before it spreads and kills him. Cee cuts it off for him with a coolness that contrasts greatly with Ezra’s endurance (what an amazing performance here by Pedro Pascal). When he asks in wonder how she’s so calm, she goes on to quietly tell of the experience she had a few years ago crawling inside the body cavity of a felled alien of some kind to clip out its organs and eggs. “It took me an hour to wash the blood out of my hair every night,” she says. “This was pretty clean compared to that.”

In the very next scene (how is Ezra still on his feet?), they are walking to meet the mercs and Ezra asks about the book she has been carrying with her and writing in. Her face lights up in the first smile we’ve ever seen and she waxes poetic about what sounds like a space Harry Potter book she’s re-creating (and augmenting) from memory. These kids in the book go to school and talk with the friends and have a romance. She wishes she could be part of that world.

She sounds like…a young teenage girl. Who just wants a home, school, friends. To talk to other kids. It’s suddenly heartbreaking to realize that Cee has never really been a child with a “normal” life.

Ezra, a middle-aged man who is no relation to her, a renegade who likely never read a YA novel in his life, listens to her. He affirms her work. He recognizes that this is important to her, and he honors it.

    It made me cry.

With all the contempt I see for teenage girls that I see in our world, and especially in our nerd culture of late, this respect meant so much to me.

It is soon after this that when the mercs refer to Cee as “your girl,” Ezra—even though he must maintain the charade that he is Cee’s father—nevertheless repeats his offer to them in these words: “13, plus a ride for me and my partner on your handsome craft…or no deal.”

“A good partnership is only made so by candid discourse,” Ezra had told Cee earlier, as he disapproved of Cee’s father’s efforts to control her by withholding information about their expedition. And Ezra doesn’t lie to her (unless you count when she asks if the amputation is hurting him), even going so far as to admit he killed her father.

Cee doesn’t lie to Ezra, either, and even gifts him with her name, and later, his life and a ride off the moon.

So no, Cee doesn’t get another father. By the end of the movie in which she and Ezra are literally tethered together to sustain each other’s life breath, she, though she lacks Ezra’s experience, is on equal footing with him, and he knows and acknowledges it.

Currently watching Trainspotting... Fantastic film, of course, but I had forgotten how utterly disgusting it is, lol.

Also, how Ewan managed to land a major role in Star Wars after this one, and playing Obi-Wan nonetheless, really boggles the mind :D Thank you, George (or whomever it was who took the risk)! :)
