    Some stuff I've seen recently:

    Extraction (2019) - It's a modern 80s action movie and I love it.

No escape (2015) - No as tense as I had hope for, but still a decent portrayal of a family, surviving a terrible situation.

Birds of Prey (2020) - watching this after finishind the "Kingdom" was a mistake... Actually watching this period was a mistake.

I dunno...I'm with you, I don't like it either, and although I think anytime something is adapted from another source the makers involved should be given some wiggle room to make it their own, or update it a bit, or whatever...but Lynch's Dune is just a different story. But there's stuff to like in it, and it was all we had. Obviously hoping for the new one to be great.

Saw this on Netflix, can't believe this was out four years ago. Another great true story.

Yes! One of my favorite found footage movies!

I know it's sort of a satire of the genre, but it's also genuinely creepy at times, and mesmerizing at others. A much needed fresh take for the handheld camera horror flicks.

I watched the new Pet Sematary last week, and... yikes. I'd heard bad things, but I figured somehow Lithgow would save the movie. He didn't, and it was awful.

Though I think the story itself just doesn't translate well to film. The existential questions that arise in the book about the nature of consciousness, reality, and the afterlife just have never been well captured in adaptations of this, and it usually just ends up being a slasher with a child and a cat as the villains.

Trollhunter is the best found footage film because it knows exactly what it is at all times and never seems to hide it's subject matter like found footage films like Cloverfield.

    Agreed, for the most part.

I do like Cloverfield, though. The hidden subject is actually pretty effective for the majority of the film, but I thought it was kind of deflating how little we saw of it in the end. Even just roughly ten seconds more of a clearer view would've done wonders, in my opinion.

For instance, I once saw a toy of the Cloverfield Monster, and I honestly didn't even recognize the thing because of how disorienting the few shots we have of it are.

Fun fact, Troll Hunter doesn't work so well in Norway as the troll hunter character is a famous comedian over here, which totally shatters the suspension of disbelief for a found-footage film. It is, however, very cool to see it is so well received out in the world :)

There are times when obscuring the monster is the right call, Godzilla 2014 (IDC what anyone says, it was the right choice) and Jaws do this well.
The issue I have with Cloverfield and it's obscuring the monster is what you said, it becomes disorienting. It screams more lack of confidence in it than building suspense.

    Totally agreed.

I actually loved how slow the Godzilla 2014 buildup was.

There were a few moments that felt a bit too much like a tease, where the scene itself simply changed before a big fight (rather than tricky cinematography doing the job). But otherwise, I appreciated the air of mystery and sheer impossibility around that chunky kanji boi.

It was a risky attempt and allowed them to build to a reveal and try to make it a real movie not a B-movie. Did it work overall? Up for each individual to decide.
But I will also contend that the halo insertion scene is one of the absolute BEST scenes in any Godzilla movies.

and it highlights one of my favorite things about the movie, almost every time you see Godzilla or the MUTO, you're at ground level looking up. It really gives them scale.

Spielberg did this a lot in Jurassic Park. Bigger dinos are almost always shown at ground level so your almost forced to look up at them, never diminishing their size.

@RockyRoadHux and I wanted to watch a horror and/or mystery flick set during summer time, so we watched 'Joy Ride' (written by JJ Abrams).

The premise isn't really original and the movie itself is okayish, but it was still fun to watch.

Ehh. Dredges up a bunch of silly new force powers not in the original. throws a bunch of twists in for "subversion" and has a bunch of convenient plot holes. I mean, bombs in space? Ridiculous. A worm living in an asteroid with small bats inside it? Preposterous.
