that throughline with Tom Hardy was such a crazy knuckle-biter!
it's weird to hope something will top it (TLJ), but for now it's definitely holding as my favorite film of 2017.

The performances throughout were great & it's definitely my favourite serious film of the year so far.

The Beguiled - a boring and unnecessary remake. It's not bad, but it is boring and Kidman and Farrell are way too good for it.

It - It takes place in the 80s. There's a clown. It's supposed to be scary but it really isn't. Well made though.

War For The Planet of the Apes - I am not a fan of the Apes movies going back to the Heston ones, but I enjoyed this one. The performance capture by Serkis is astounding and award worthy

what a disappointment. but you're right. it didn't need to be remade in the first place ~ the original was sufficiently unsettling and well-produced.

It's really not bad. But it just feels so out of place and if you've seen the original you have a good feel for it and Eastwood fit that role better than Colin, who I really like, but just not in that role.

Some remakes are needed. But it really didn't do anything to make it worthy of it.
Remaking Scarface from prohibition in the 20s to cocaine in the 80s was brilliant.
Potentially updating it to modern drugs now is another smart idea.

Just flat out remaking it? Nah. That's a no-no.

sounds exactly right, i agree: if it's not a new adaptation or interpretation, what's the point?
and i'm sad for Farrell because i really like him as an actor, but he's had a string of bad films, unfortunately.

it would be interesting to take that story and set it in a different time and place: why not a different war in a different country with different customs, etc.
    bummer.

Farrell might be the best actor with some of the most mind boggling decisions.
He's not Cage/Cusack bad, but they had their runs on top.
Farrell still should be on top. The Lobster proves that.
Incredibly excited for Killing of a Sacred Deer.
But he does Fantastic Beasts, and while not a bad film, his role is beneath him and then The Beguiled.

oh the Lobster was so weird and wonderful ~ that did him good, i agree.
i'm excited for the Sacred Deer too (fingers crossed).
didn't know he was even in Fantastic Beasts.
i really want him to get good juicy parts worthy of his chops! : D

Blade Runner 2049 - I liked it. Not quite as the original meaning in tone. Not a lot of action or emotion. The visuals were well done though. I will watch it again when it comes out on DVD.

    Speaking of underutilized, amazing actors...

One of my all-time favorite actors Cuba Gooding Jr sorta fell off the map for a bunch of years doing direct to DVD/On Demand type of stuff but recently has been picking up steam in better roles. I don't know what happened to him, but I hope that he fired his agent. I think that he deserves better roles.

To stay on-topic, the last movie that I watched was The Force Awakens the other night. The last movie that I watched that was a first time viewing for me was Jason Bourne. It was mediocre, but enjoyable if you like that sort of film.
