Been on a bit of a run the last few days...

Had a sudden urge to rewatch the old Trek movies - watching I, II and III over two days. Sure the effects have aged and like anything viewed in hindsight you notice some ham-fisted acting and storytelling, but like the OT, I'll always love them. In order, Subjective Lazarus Rating: 7/10, 9/10 and 7/10.

Caught 'Underwater' on the recommendation of a friend - i was expecting it to be awful, but while it didn't really bring anything new to the table, it was a watchable enough mix of The Abyss and Aliens, with a dusting of Pacific Rim. SLR: 6.5/10

Guy Ritchie's most recent gangster flick The Gentlemen is again a bit lacking in anything new, but once you're past the somewhat dragged out first 20mins it's watchable enough, even if completely forgettable. SLR 6/10

Oh I haven't seen that in YEARS! What'd you think of it?

Last night for my birthday I had only a few requests: the select food items of choice (all of which were very predictably me) and to watch my favorite movie of all time after dinner.

Long one shots, tension without a single action scene, and characterization that moves the plot forward. Outside of a few opening and closing shots, this movie takes place in one room (and a bathroom) and it's brilliant. I remember my first time watching this movie and it still leaves me with the same feelings as it did back then. And with everything going on in the world, a movie about due process and the responsibility of our fellow men in the jury is something my soul really needed.

    Saw two films today.

1st: The Ice Pirates (1984). This movie had some interesting backdrops and set designs (although by no means all of them were interesting). Acting and execturion was largely garbage, however, and the all of the rape jokes and racisms made it a big "nope!".

2nd: Jojo Rabbit (2019): I love it! I love everything about it and everyone involved with it, and I think I just might have a new favorite movie! What a clever, warm, horrible, and funny movie, and Taika Waititi is a friggin' treasure! :D

The Ice Pirates is what I like to call a "time capsule" movie. A cheap throw together flick to capitalize on the exact instant in pop culture. It's 1983/4 to a tee in terms of pop culture.

I picked up a copy of Val Kilmer's memoir "I'm Your Huckleberry" but before I get around to reading it I decided I should probably revisit some of his movies I haven't seen in a long time. Things like Real Genius and Top Secret! I still watch pretty often but I haven't seen some in decades. One of those was Willow.

I loved it as a kid and I really enjoyed it this time (Val was still hilarious) but as an adult I was able to recognize the plot was a pretty generic/unoriginal fantasy tale. The climax was also kind of a cheesy dud, I didn't understand why the bad lady was suddenly dressed like a mummy and acting like Dr. Frankenstein. The scene where she turned the good guy army into pigs didn't really seem to have a purpose excepting eating up a little time and budget. As I said I enjoyed it, though the characters/performances were better than the story.

    yeah that sounds like Grace

Anyways. Watched the new Elisabeth Shue movie that co-stars Tom Hanks.
Good picture. Only 90 minutes. But 80 of that 90 minutes is naval battle. So if you like naval warfare, it's for you. If not, don't waste your time. There's virtually nothing else here for you.
