Rogue One: A Star Wars Story & Suicide Squad thereafter.

My goodness what a film this is. I found myself watching over and over since it premiered and I just love the film and characters. I also enjoyed Solo a star wars story. Rogue one being that it connects 3 and 4 just fantastic and whenever it's on I enjoy the most out of it.

Suicide squad; my favorite actor will smith as deadshot--need I say more? Hehehehe.

One of the greatest performances on screen IMO, Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs....introduced my 17 yr old son to this movie and he was enthralled...so great to see....

Nic Cage fighting deranged animatronic kids entertainers.
    Unfortunately it's dog poop.
Not even enjoyable in a so good it's bad way. It's 90 minutes but probably could have been done in under an hour.
The rest of the cast seems to struggle with words. Sad because Cage is mute in this so there's literally nothing to really write home about here.
The set is fun. The idea is cool. But everything about this is just bad.

    Capricorn One
    Capture.PNG

    This was a fantastic movie!
It's also a terrible narrative story!

It's not fantastic because it's horrible - this isn't a "so bad it's good" sort of thing.

The visual storytelling of this film is amazing.
Just amazing. It's right up there with Star Wars on visual storytelling.

Unfortunately the narrative story it's given to tell is just terribly written, and all of the devices that would serve the visual storytelling better are just not there.

I think a great example of this is the two helicopters that are in the movie.
    They're faceless "sharks".

Here's what I mean by devices...
To keep them faceless, it goes to ridiculous lengths to avoid giving any possible humanization of them.
For instance, there's a scene where the helicopters need to indicate that they're communicating with each other about their surveying/hunting. Normally you would cut into the cockpit and have some radio chatter, or voice over that radio chatter.
However, to preserve their faceless archetype "shark" token, the helicopters stop. Hover. Then rotate to look at each other cockpit to cockpit with their blades merely feet apart from slinging into each other!

Next up, the pilots land at one point and get out to search a building. But...they keep their helmets on. Not only do they keep their helmets on, they keep their blacked out sun visors down while walking around!

    It's bizarre as all hell!
However, if you toss out the reality of the situation and just look at it from a visual storytelling perspective, it's just genius.
But from a narrative storytelling perspective...it's painfully ridiculous!

And EVERYTHING is like that through this film!

By watching this, it really drove home how good A New Hope was because Capricorn One's visual storytelling is pretty much on the level with that of A New Hope, but A New Hope gives its visual storytelling tool a MUCH better fit narrative story and storytelling devices so that when token devices do their visual craft, it's not cognitively or narratively awkward.

Peter Hyams can speak with images and motion like the best, but holy dear lord he can't write a narrative worth a bean!

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Amazing movie, easily one of the best in the saga despite its flaws.

I Care A Lot (Netflix/Prime depending on where you live)

    Meh city.
Great performances in a movie that thinks it's a lot smarter than it really is. It's not particularly new or original story wise, bad people do bad things and get away with it over good people type dark comedy. Which isn't inherently a problem but you need *something* to be the hook then. The performances got me through the movie (Rosamund Pike, Diane Weist, Peter Dinklage) but just kind of left me feeling "Well that was a movie I watched" at the end.

I personally think its a lot better than TPM and nowhere near as bad as most people seem to think. Its far from great but There's plenty to like, including some genuinely great moments.
