I tried to be as clear as I could, so here I go again.

Leia assumed Tarkin to mean it when he gave her the choice to have either (a) her home planet Alderaan with its millions of citizens or (b) the hidden Rebel base on Yavin IV destroyed.

Instead she lied and presented "Dantooine" as the Rebels hidden base. She knew that Tarkin would verify and be infuriated that she lied to him, she probably knew that pleading ignorance "I don't know where they are now" would not have worked and Tarkin would have destroyed Alderaan in retaliation.

At best her lie could have enabled some people on Alderaan (including her father) to escape, but essentially she consciously sacrificed her home planet on behalf of the Alliance.

Possible that she should have cried about her decision to tell a lie, but then Tarkin made it clear he would have destroyed Alderaan anyway. So she ended up in the uncomfortable situation that she was accepting the destruction of Alderaan and Tarkin saw to it.

I don't care about why Leia had lied to Tarkin about the Rebel Alliance's location. What I find questionable is that Lucas never allowed her to show any grief over Alderaan's location on screen. What I find even more questionable is the idea that Leia had to seem strong by not expressing her grief. Which is ridiculous and a little unrealistic to me.

    because it was 1977.

the depiction of strength for women was very different then.
it's a cultural thing, not meant to reflect negatively on Leia at all. in fact, the opposite.

what seems "ridiculous and unrealistic" to us now only seems so because we're viewing it through a different lens.

for girls and women who grew up with the OT, we never once questioned Leia's grief nor her strength. no one thought it was ridiculous or unrealistic.
in fact, it was mighty empowering in a time when there just weren't that many great female characters in pop films.

A lot of us have been over this many times and I think a pretty general thinking is that there was time whether on the inside or in her jail cell waiting for the torture droid or something like that or .

    OMG, sad but true.

Wish there was something like this on Episode VIII (wishful thinking lol):

Agree. Blame the budget or Lucas but the new canon is making a good job trying to cover all those open spots left by the OT. Because there are a bunch of them, but that does not make the movies less endearing to us.

I still dislike the fact that Leia was not able to openly mourn the destruction of Alderaan, since Luke was allowed to openly express grief over Obi-Wan's death.
