The camera focuses in on Billie Lourd when Leia flies back to the ship. Very sad :'(

Odd poll. Both could be....and are...true.

During my third watching I paid extra attention to her dress during this particular scene. It waves.

It does, but you have to look for it (like we did), because the scene is dark. I think a little tweaking could have made it better, not seeming so static.

Now I'm thinking how this would look if they had gone full Marilyn Monroe from The Seven Year Itch. :D

no problem with the physics, no problem with the use of the force, it just felt off and took me out of the moment. In fantasy you always toe the the line of awe and cartoon. Personal taste is all. I found it cartoon-y and had no sense of awe to me. I'm glad for others that it worked but it was one of many scenes that took me out of the story. The idea and intention worked, the end product did not for whatever reason. You can't always know why.

I have no problems with the scene. SW is a kind franchise where you just have to accept certain things from time to time. Like some farmboy, riding an X-Wing for the first time can blow up the Death Star. Or that giant worms can live on asteroids. Or that a bunch of primitives with sticks and stones can beat soldiers with laser guns. Or that one can cast lightning from his fingers.

I'm not crazy about these poll options. Because I don't think they overdid it, and in fact I like the moment, but not because it's "plausible."

Firstly, Star Wars isn't sci-fi. It's never been about what's plausible. It's fantasy in space.

Secondly, the moment immediately struck me as very princess-like. To me, it was more about Leia as royalty--about being a moment of beauty--than about showing a "plausible" survival sequence.

Leia dropped her royal title and became a General.
She knew that being Princess or Queen of an asteroid field formerly known as Alderaan was a bad career move.

What humans? You mean the daughter of the Chosen One? Yeah, that happens in fantasy. The only other case I know of is Doctor Aphra. While you are technically correct (there is more than one human), it's still an exception, rather then the norm.

    I've been thinking...

So the reasoning why Leia was able to force pull herself back to the ship was because the ship has more mass. That makes sense to me because based on our laws of physics, that fits perfectly. For some reason though it kept nagging at me and finally I figured out why.

When Yoda lifts Luke's X-wing or the pillar off of Anakin, his body seems unaffected. Now we're talking Yoda so maybe there's a masters skill that protects him from those effects. But still, Luke moves Threepio in the Ewok village and we don't see the tree limb he's tied to bend, but I suppose, he too we could argue, is more trained than Leia. But the more I think, it seems like moving an object with the force never seems to affect the Jedi's body. I'm not saying a Jedi couldn't devise a way to make it work that way (Anakin uses the force to slow the fall of himself and others in CW), but for me, I think that's one element of that moment that bugged me and still does.

It could be explained away, but each additional explanation stretches ones ability to disbelieve just a little bit more.

i thought the scene with Leia pulling herself back to the ship was absolutely beautiful.

During my first viewing at the theater i heard someone chuckle at it, and knew straight away that some people we'rent buying into it.

I didn't think that people would belittle both the scene and Leia by using a derogatory nickname... comparing it to mary poppins is bloody ridiculous and i don't like it.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if they want to call her 'Leia Poppins' or the scene 'the mary poppins scene' then that's fine.. my opinion is that i don't approve of it with a passion.

because of the reaction to it, i would have preferred RJ to have done something else. i hate that the reaction of some fans has made me think that one of Carrie's scenes should have been done differently. there's something so wrong about that.

    :)

i really disliked/hate it since the first time i saw it, even multiple things about it. the execution was weak, the fact that leia uses the force for the first time in that way feels stupid to me as well.
Leia using the force is fine, after all we all know she has it since ESB or RotJ but using it like that when you're using the force for the first time is ridiculous.
also, in my mind, she must have somehow created a bubble around her AND fly with the force at the same time which seems too powerful, no matter who does it.

But how is it anyway different then Luke using the Force to blow up the Death Star? That's his first time, if you will.

You need to build a character up chronologically.
Maybe more than half would not have problems with the so called Leia Poppins if there were a few adult novels showing Leia training with Luke. Maybe even a few scenes with the Canon Saba Sabatyne.
In media res only work in written materials like Steven Erikson's Malazan work. It's a big no no in movies.
Eventually maybe we will have a novel of Leia's training, but then everyone already watched the TLJ movie and already have their own opinion on the subject.

    I think I get it.
Most of Those who like the TLJ/ willing to suspend belief are new fans/casual fans who is just here to enjoy space battles with powerful characters with swords.

Most of those who hates the TLJ are the older fans/hard core fans who grew up on the old EU and hates history being rewritten.
