Since “The Last Jedi” began around the same time “The Force Awakens” ended, why did Leia Organa’s wardrobe changed so drastically? She went from wearing clothes practical for a military leader:

to wearing an outfit or two, reminiscent of her mother’s wardrobe:

within hours or days. Talk about a head spinner. And when "The Last Jedi" picked up the story, her command was in the middle of a battle.

There is passage of time between TFA and TLJ of couple of days that neccesistates for a change of clothes because they need to be washed. Simple as that. Also, her Episode VIII clothes look simply better when compared to what was given to her in Episode VII, even if they're less practical, just by a slight edge (but proven by her clothes from Episode IV she can still fight very efficiently even in a tight dress.)

That's a minor issue. Leia changed clothes at the end of TFA, and TFA was a very, very rushed movie.

Carrie Fisher famously threw shade at her TFA costume (classy gas station attendant) and hair style (baboon ass). I am sure Rian just wanted to give Leia some additional gravitas and please his actress.

They should've hired Trisha Biggar to make the costumes for the sequel trilogy instead.

I've been wondering if Leia's much-maligned "mary poppins" moment might've been less awkward had she worn something less like a dress in space and more like a military leader.

...of course, only Star Wars could inspire such obsessive speculation over something so profoundly trivial. It almost makes you think there's absolutely no way to please all the fans, huh? ;)

Actually, TLJ began "before" the ending of TFA, when Rey first met Luke.

I did not like Purple Hair's or Leia's TLJ outfits. Are they leading militant forces or going to the Opera?

I'm thinking all the people that say she looked like Mary Poppins...have never actually seen Mary Poppins.

She was in mourning, maybe that's why she took on a more elegant, somber look.

Star Wars is legendary for using wardrobe to reinforce a certain sensibility for the character, which is especially notable in Luke's transformation from farm kid to rebel fighter to a wise Jedi Master in monk's robes. But this evolution happens to all the main characters. Their uniform is intrinsic to the meta-narrative in their story arcs, it's just not about looking cool or fitting the scene at hand.

So, if it didn't seem practical for her action in the movie, what is it meant to convey? I think it shows she is a Jedi herself, or very close to it. Those are her female Jedi Robes. A little more stylish, to be sure, but I'd expect no less from the daughter of Padme. ;)

When she is standing in the bunker on Crait looking out over the plain, with only her eyes above the collar, well, damn- I dropped every bit of concern about her wardrobe. It's perfect. Same for her episode in the vacuum of space. It would not have been as breathtaking with her in ordinary general's garb. Only a Jedi can do what she did, and so she was dressed as one.

In TFA she's arriving at the battle on Takodana.
In TLJ they are fleeing the FO.

She's probably not expecting to be in combat. She's dressed much like Mon Mothma was but with Leia flare.
Remember: the plan was to delay the attack then run from the FO to regroup, likely with allies.
But the FO being able to track through hyperspace changed all that.

Yes, her standing in front of the gate belongs on the list of her most iconic Princess Leia moments.
