    Both are true. The whole wookiee idea to go with instead of ewoks was along the lines of what @eeprom was talking about, but what you're mentioning is, like so much of Star Wars, the result of the ideal hitting reality.

    One of the really interesting things about Star Wars that I love is just how large the volume is of ideals hitting reality and rather than ditching it, it gets spun into another variation based on what can be done as close as possible to that original ideal. The OT is just packed with such things, and for me, when Star Wars is hitting obstacles at every turn and has to do this a lot, and everyone is stressed out and racing the clock, that's when Star Wars is at its best and makes the best films.
