I own all of the SW novels and have read about %90 of them. It's a time consuming project, took me several years (in between other lit.) to nearly complete. I haven't met a lot of people as engrossed in the EU books. I'm sure you're out there!

Let's share some of your favorite story arcs and what you would have changed.

I personally thought the "Black Fleet Crisis" and "Jedi Academy" trilogies are to this date the strongest entries. Timothy Zhan's "Thrawn" series was cool, but not as exciting as it was hyped. I absolutely loved the entire "New Jedi Order" and the Yuuzhan Vong war series! All the major characters got their moments to shine and Jasen's evolution was very convincing... if a little too dark for SW at times.

Also, surprisingly some of the Cone Wars novels took me by surprise, particularly the "Medstar" duology. Those were some of the best sci-fi war novels I've ever read.

Go ahead, name some of your favorites.

Does it damage my fan cred if I admit to only reading the Thrawn trilogy?

But I did really like it. I tried a couple others but could never get into it. Looking forward to checking out New Dawn as I try to keep up with the new canon.

I have never read anything in english , but in this agonizing wait for ep.7 i am thinking of filling the time with EU novels, starting with "Heir to the empire" (since it is not Canon anymore it could be fun to read & i will probably not get too attached to the story either, since i know it is not Canon)

Besides the Thrawn trilogy: -what would you recomend after that?

The only novels ever translated into Swedish is the "Young jedi Knights" books, i kind of liked them, but they were very short & kind of simple, i want something more grown up & just borrowed the "red harvest" book from a friend, it is promising :)
I Think the "Darth Plagueis" book is a must too :)

I'm reading "Young Jedi Knights" at the moment and while they are simple, still a very enjoyable read!
If you enjoyed those books I highly reccomend by the same author Kevin J. Anderson the

    "Jedi Academy" trilogy:
    1. Jedi Search
    2. Dark Apprentice
    3. Champions of the Force

These are some of the best books and tie into the YJK very nicely.

Labyrinth of Evil and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader complimented Revenge of the Sith well to form a trilogy, I also liked Revan as a sequel to the Knights of the Old Republic games. Shadows of the Empire and The Truce at Bakura for a before and after to Return of the Jedi were fun
reads too. The Thrawn trilogy had good ideas and the Courtship of Princess Leia was good now that The Clone Wars ties into it.

I always felt "Truce at Bakura" never got the credit it deserves. It had decent action and the alien race was interesting too.

The Jedi Academy trilogy is awesome, Kyp Durron was very interesting. I also have read Truce at Bakura, the tales books I think tales from the cantina was my favorite, I really liked the Heir to the Empire series Grand. When I was growing up my mom read just about every SW novel so I have read through quite a bit lol. I like the Bounty Hunter Wars what I was able to read of it.

On a side note I got to meet Kevin J Anderson at Denver comic con last year, he is very friendly and a cool guy. I got a signed copy of tales of the Bounty Hunters from him (boba fett)

The Jedi Academy was my favorite of the EU novels. By far.

That being said, enjoying A New Dawn very much right now. Excited to see what the new unified canon has in store for us.

    I, Jedi
Michael Stackpole is a unique book written from the first person perspective (not based on any of the big three characters) but gives you an insight to the force unlike anything before.

Definitely one of the best SW stories ever, I also enjoyed Dathomir a lot more than the Clone Wars TV series.

I loved A.C. Crispin's Young Han Solo trilogy. I, Jedi was good. Tales from Jabba's Palace was fun. And, of course, the Thrawn trilogy. Never got into the New Jedi Order so I can't comment on any of those. There just got to be too many.

My favourite EU novels were Labyrinth of Evil, Dark Rendezvous and X-Wing: Wraith Squadron (the very first Star Wars novel I ever bought). However, I only ever read the German translations of EU novels, and I realize therefore that books I considered to be total garbage (like "Jedi Trial" and the execrable "A Storm Approaches") might be ok to read in English and simply suffered in translation or that the novels that I enjoyed the most are badly written nonsense in the original English and were improved by being translated.

@Cole Oh yeah, Crispin pulled Han's mannerism straight out of the movies. I loved his sidekick too!!

    Seriously: Shadows of the Empire
Most Fun: I forget what it is called, but there is a Star Wars Zombie Stormtrooper Horror Novel with Han Solo and Chewbacca. Not Joking.

    Edit: Found it!

Haha, yeah how was it? I haven't got around reading it yet.
I know it supposed to be horror but does it use SW universe well?

50/50. Its really not a very good book, but I give the author props for concept. All cards on the table, I listened to the audio-book on a road trip, so your mileage may vary.

Can't be worse than Red Harvest, the prequel set in the Old Republic.

Yeah, unfortunately more recent entries in EU were very poor. "Kenobi" was a complete downer and I can't even finish "New Dawn"... yeah, it's that bad.

I went back to reading the Young Jedi Knights series by K.J. Anderson and his wife (young adult novels) and they're by far some of the best! They're full of interesting characters, exotic locations and awesome action.
