Rapping? In Star Wars? F**k that.

John Williams didn't want to do the music for that scene?

    DAMN.

Well, I guess that rules out the soundtrack being something I was 100% confident would be 100% awesome with this movie.

    * sigh *

Just bring on the 14th already.....

And they just showed a clip from the trailer on the show....that was incredibly lame....guessing they didn't want to show all of it though so they could show the other parts od the trailer tomorrow night with Adam Driver? lmao

I take it, you are not familiar with Lin Manuel Miranda's work then?

You might want to aquaint yourself, because it's awesome.
And I don't think that classical orchestral score is the right thing for a cantina

It was when John Williams did it in the original Star Wars (not "classical orchestra", but it was distinctly John Williams).

And he obviously doesn't like that. This is the bright side when you are old and famous: you can say no to work.

But seriously, dear, you should be really sure if you want to watch this movie or if you want to get a non-remastered DVD box set of the OT and mainline this.
Because all I have you seen saying whenever something came up that was not 100% taken straight out of the OTs, is that you don't want to watch TFA if...

And I think there comes a point at which you just need to decide to not watch it.

It will not be the OT. Because this are not the 70s anymore.
The cold war is over. Germany's reunited. A Black man is president and ABBA have parted ways.

And none of that will come back.
    Sorry :/

I have no opinion of this. Before this news I had never heard of him. So yeah no idea who he is, never heard any of his work (except the Jimmy Fallon freestyle rap thingy).
I'll have to wait and see/hear until the 16th

I cannot wait to find out what he came up with.

Lin Manuel is really a genius with an incredibly wide range of styles at his disposal.

In Hamilton he brings in everything from classic rap battles, hip hop, very much Fred Astair tunes, Jazz inspired stuff and incredibly sweet 70s musical-pop songs with lines along the lines of:

"You're my favorite subjects and I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love"

You never know what you get with him, only that it's incredibly good.
Might it be rap? Heck yeah, it might, but it also might be classical 70s psycho pop cantina music with a decidedly modern spin.

Ok, because I am a terrible nerd and fangirl, here are to examples from Hamilton, both completely opposite to each other, just to show off his incredible range. I'm not saying he will do either, because I don't think he will.
He will come up with something very Star Wars.

    Hamilton - Alexander Hamilton

    Hamilton - You'll be back

Everyone has the right to be skeptical.. and if any critical fans are just told to "go watch the OT" what does that achieve? It only makes it easier for the quality to drop.

But anyway.. I think the decision to get someone else for the Cantina music is a good one. John Williams probably isn't at a place in his life where he can make short, snappy, poppy and silly songs for Cantina scenes at the drop of a hat.. It would require a different mindset, more time and he already needs to take it easy. The guy takes his craft seriously. I view the music as an external commentary on the galaxy we're seeing, so i'd have also picked someone else for the cantina music if it were up to me.

JJ loves the Beastie Boys and there is a couple of scenes in the Star Trek films that kind of break the fourth wall for me. I know JJ loves the old school rap, there better not be any rap in a Cantina scene damn it.

Grand Admiral Kraum has a couple of sources.. and based on a few things i've learned about the Cantina scene (since May last year) i'm half expecting a little bit of alien rap in there.

I can confirm there will be a DJ (probably alien/masked) in the scene and at least two female human dancers.. thats all I know. Oh and it took about 4 days to film and they were all sweating their balls off. Very long days.

Cool. It sounds like they put a lot of work into it, I'm excited to see what it is; hopefully a nice mix of the cantina and Jabba's palace (Original)

It could be fun if it's alien.. As in not english, not understandable...
If they go with a english singing rap that would take me out of the movie...

Btw, a week? How long is this scene?

Being skeptical is absolutely fine, but when someone does nothing but bring the same comment over and over it becomes a pattern and it's very very noticable to the point where it is the only thing that people connect with a person, especially when they rarely contribute anything else.

But criticism is noticed. Thank you.

And I agree, while the Cantina music was very on point in the original, John Williams was 40 years younger then and more connected to the music of his own time, but his natural playground is orchestra heavy classical music. This is where he excels and where he is very much at home.

But a new Star Wars movie can not jsut be a monument to the old, a constant rehash of what was. Two generations have passed since the original movie and to connect with this generation and ours, it needs to grow and find the right tone. Especially in the scenes where they can deviate from the classical score.
The Cantina tune is as much a classic as the imperial march or the main theme are, but that's because it hit (a pretty jazzy) nerve, but it became a beloved classic to us because we already connect it to this scene, even decades later.

I don't think this same music would have the same effect today in a different film. Instead it would sound dusty and out of touch.
And I think if anyone knows this, it's John Williams. That man is not a music God for nothing. Though I don't think they'll go for rap. Rhythm yes. Lots of bass, yes, but not rap.

Edit: Alien rap... holy... what even? How do you guys come up with ideas like that? That's actually.. that's great

Definitely, with a little bit of EDM/urban music influence thrown in. Its gonna be interesting.

It seems like it was one of the scenes where JJ was really concerned about getting it right.. one more tidbit I remembered is that JJ was changing things around a lot and the extras were getting really tired out. Thats everything I know/remember. Again, boring predictable stuff but 100% on the money. Oh and the scene i'm talking about takes place on Jakku, not at the castle. There may be TWO Cantina scenes!

It needs to walk the fine line between sounding groovy AND being humorous.
I'm happy they didn't (at least from what I gather) go for the hip 'grimdark' approach and are keeping SW 'light'. A scene like this could fit into that.

On the other hand, this news will feed the 'oh no, TFA is nothing but an ep4 copy/rehash' flames even more.
Dear lord it is even fuelling the 'oh no, it's going to be too different from the OT' flames as well.

LMAO. This film will be torn apart by some no matter what and (fingers crossed here) hopefully loved by most.

Ohhhh, this is amazing news. Honestly if someone needs a way to pass the time until this movie comes out I recommend listening to Hamilton, it's fantastic. I spent basically all of October obsessed with it and I listen to one or two songs from it every day now.
