I've tried to stay away from spoilers but I've noticed something in the trailer and need to post! The crashed X-Wing....

    Hello Wedge! Hello MVS!

Rey is Luke's daughter. Luke handed her over to wedge to take her away and to protect her - echoing his own upbringing. Wedge and infant Rey crash on Jakku in X-Wing. Wedge watches over her. Kylo Ren tracks them down years later. Kills Wedge. Rey escapes.

Her search for Daddy Luke begins....

    Speculation frenzy!

Cool theory but I'm not sure if we know how old Wedge is in the OT. It seems to me MVS might be too old to play Wedge

That X-Wing is about as old as the Star Destroyer based on what it looks like when it crashed (a year after the Battle Of Endor).

They asked the actor who played Wedge to cameo and he said no. Let's nip this one before it speeds away.

    Maybe they recast??

I don't think he's wedge but there are crazier ideas out there.

What about the actor who played the admiral from ESB? The guy who was also in last crusade, right?

    He still around?

Thanks. Guess I could have googled my bad. Sunday night beers.

Well, the fact that he passed may support MVS playing his character from ESB.

I read something along the lines of him not liking SW. Looked at his Wikipedia page, and wasn't impressed. What Scum.

The quote I read from him concerning him reprising his role as Wedge that the role "Bored him". It's a shame because Wedge became such a popular character with fans.

The man's allowed to have a say in what he enjoys, and what he wants to do in his career. Doesn't make him "scum." His role as Wedge was great in the three movies we got him in, and we're going to have to be content with that. It's not that big of a deal.

Somehow "Scum" was the cantina auto correct for a far different word. I let it slide.

"He had to work a lot of late nights, too, and he was a complete trooper."

That scene with all the villagers rounded up for execution in the teaser is at night ;)

There's a lot going on here and, while I love to speculate, I'm coming to realise that most of the spoilers we've heard so far have turned out to have some basis in truth--but I don't like the idea of MvS playing an aggrieved Imperial stranded and left on a planet where his resentment grows and grows. Because I hear that and I just think "Khan", and that makes me think fan-fiction. But, as I said, there has so far been a basis of truth behind the rumours.

I'm also confounded by the idea that there was a battle over a planet with no population. What was being fought over? Why were the Imperials there, were they just massing after the loss of their leader(s)?

Has anyone considered the idea that Jakku was a shipyard? Maybe the Imperials were building those SDs and SSDs in orbit and the rebels swept in and took out the next batch of ships before they were complete. That would make sense: instead of concentrating on taking out existing fleets after Endor, ensure the fleets don't grow. Take down the means of production, then mop up the existing hardware knowing it cannot be replaced (at least not too quickly).

But I do like this, and this is ENTIRELY speculation: TFA opening with an homage to ANH and a SD coming into shot from above camera over a desert world. And as more of it becomes visible we realise its in flames, falling apart and already tumbling toward the planet. If JJ wanted to quickly establish that the Empire (First Order) is in decline what better way than to subvert the image that established it as a formidable power in EpIV by showing that emblem crashing and burning.

And now I go way too far: Cut to the surface and there's Luke, literally pulling craft out of the skies in mesmeric, "Force Unleashed" abandon. This is why he goes into exile. This is what people run from a cantina to see exploding in the sky. This is the flashback, perhaps?

    Or maybe not....

One of the great cardinal sins of TFA speculation, using the flashback for one of your favored theories.

The idea of a burning Star Destroyer crashing is a brilliant image but no way is that the flashback and the opening won't be a flashback and there will be no jump forwards.

What I could see is the Star Destroyer crashing setting up the events at the start of the film. We see Rey ride out to scavenge from it, Poe goes to observe it, etc

Yeah I agree. A flashback opening wouldn't be a flashback at all and a jump forward is just not SW imo. I like the idea of echoing the ANH opening with a crashing SD though, that's just something that would impress me personally. I guess the SD in the dunes serves the same purpose to a point. I think it's a given that the flashback will be a "Force Vision" invoked by Rose, and that sounds reasonable.

But SW movies start with craft approaching a planet or base and the obvious assumption at the moment is that the craft opening TFA will be that bearing Kylo and his troops to Jakku to sack the village. For me, that seems a little bit meh, but I can't really explain why....

"A lot of late nights" sounds a lot like he's in more scenes than just the stuff at the beginning.

My guess is that his role is mostly (if not completely) confined to Jakku, but that it's more extensive than getting a lightsaber, losing it, and then getting killed in less than ten minutes worth of screentime. Especially with the rumor that he's a former Imperial who set up an entire civilization on the planet.

Could Finn and Poe cause the Star Destroyer to crash that Rey sees?
