SPECULATION Lor San Tekka (Max Von Sydow's Character).

Poe: Lor, I'm looking for an old Jedi named Kanan Jarrus.
Lor: Kanan Jarrus...Kanan Jarrus.. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time...A long time...

 

I made this in May of 2014. It was the first thing I thought when I heard Max was in the cast (that and an Obi-Wan recast). I doubt it's true, but it wouldn't have been the most shocking revelation to me. The dramatic shift in accent is a big problem for the theory. I don't think MVS has ever done, or really can do, an American accent. But who knows.

 

i personally hope this is the case and that its why we haven't heard much of his character... It would be a great way to tie in the rebels series

I just want to him in the movies.... it would give them more than just the one Jedi to fall back on.

 

Lor in Thai translates to handsome in English. Lor could also be translated to Lord or variations of several names in numerous languages including the name REN. Also, it could mean the body of knowledge, especially of a traditional, anecdotal, or popular nature , on a particular subject.
San in Spanish translates to saint in English.
Takka in Japanese translates to "red hot iron" in English. People say it also refers to the red color of tuna or salmon in sushi.

 

Based on my belief that TFA is a soft-reboot of ANH/OT, I think MVS's scene(s) will be quite similar to this scene from ANH:

 

"The rumor going around is that Max von Sydow plays a character named Lor San Tekka, a man in possession of information vital to the quest of finding the elusive Luke Skywalker. "

Wasn't there a rumour a long, long time ago that MvS would call someone and say "It's here" when he sees the Sabre?....

 

That would explain Luke's scene of him touching Artoo during his meeting with the vicar, MVS is great in those conversation scenes.

 

He could be contacting Leia, who then sends Poe to retrieve it. Moving Target has a TFA era epilogue (likely set during TFA) where Ematt tells Leia that Poe is absolutely committed to the Resistance and will "get what we need." Leia asks if there is news from Jakku. He says there is and that she is awaited in the command center. I'm guessing the saber is "what they need" (in order to find Luke) and they are hearing back from Poe, possibly after meeting with MVS.
A big question is why do they believe the saber will take them to Luke. If he hasn't had it since Cloud City, why would it lead to his hiding place. I know the rumors, but it still doesn't fit unless he had contact with it after ESB. But that's for another thread.

I don't get the reboot vibe some are getting. I don't see the evidence other than a desert planet and a superweapon. It is Star Wars, so there are going to be similar themes. And what we have heard about MVS's character doesn't fit with that Obi-Wan scene.

 

More the wishful thinking.

 

I now we now have a rumoured name and all, but if that doesn't pan out do you think MvS could be playing a Dooku?....

 

Regarding the OLD NEWS on Sydow's character...

So Screencrush.com and many other website claimed last month that they have known for awhile now that Max von Sydow’s character in the new film was nicknamed “the Vicar” on set. Now, Making Star Wars claims to know the name of his actual character which is named Lor San Tekka, a man in possession of information vital to the quest of finding the elusive Luke Skywalker. As an elder of a village on Jakku, Lor San Tekka is sought out by the heroic pilot Poe Dameron to find the missing Jedi’s whereabouts.
(Questions, yes, some have been beat to death regarding this subject)

So, if this is all true then what's his story?

Does he give the information to Finn and Rey on how to find Maz? (is his character like Dex from Episode II, "beyond the outer rim" dude?)

Is he evil and an officer that once commanded the downed Star Destroyer?

Was he just a Stormtrooper, Tie Pilot, etc... like FINN?

What is his intentions, and does he tell REY the same stuff he may drop to KYLO REN behind the scenes? Could he be be how REN finds the Maz castle?

Do you think he is just a good guy just trying to make his way in the universe?

So many questions. As we are getting closer I am wondering what you all think regarding the amazing actor with a small supporting roles. Will he play a larger role in Episode 8?

i needed something star warsy to accompany my favorite line of his from Strange Brew

 

This just occurred to me that maybe getting Luke's lightsaber to Leia, she can easily feel the Force through it and try to pinpoint Luke similar to how she did during the end of Empire Strikes Back just through something like telepathy. That is canon, you know...

Using the lightsaber like a "cell phone tower" extension of the Force, she can more readily pinpoint him potentially.
