I was about to post a link to this news found on the CNN website:

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/10/entertainment/feat-star-wars-gay-character/index.html

I think it's cool to have an openly gay character in the Star Wars universe.
And I was about to ask if we are ready to have a gay, lesbian, transgendered, Bi character in TFA...

    But... on second thought...

Beside Padme & Anakin... and Leia & Han (Wicket and Leia)... no character truly expressed openly their sexual preference in the Star Wars Saga.

I mean... Maybe Tarkin is gay, even Luke or Obi Wan.
Maybe Lando is bisexual... we don't know that.

So that is why I turn this discussion on the following subject:

Loving relationship is not something we see THAT often in these movies.
It's more about friendship and family relationships.

Will it be more apparent in the ST?
More people expressing their feelings for each other or expressing their sexual preferences?

    That being said :)
I would love to see more of that, and applaud if there is a openly gay, lesbian, transgendered or Bi character on the new Star Wars Trilogy... as long as they don't go for the cheap stereotypes, but channeled into a true love story between two characters.

    What do you think?

I agree that a love relationship is something we hardly ever see in the saga. So on that note I'd have to say that I really don't care so much about a character's orientation (straight, gay, whatever) if that orientation has nothing of pertinence to the story.

I mean, I certainly don't want to know what Jabba was into, no matter who or what it involved, for instance.

That said, it'd work if it actually meant something to the story. It's even been kind of mentioned on that thread about love interest speculation, the one with the poll, though I think that was more in jest. It's a tricky slope, like it or not, and they'd risk pissing off many fans - who for their credit probably aren't really homophobic - and I'm not sure Disney wants that to be the focus of the ST... which it would inevitably become.

They had a hard enough time with the black stormtrooper, for reasons I don't understand. The whole world apparently was blowing up over it while I was just sitting thinking "awesome, a real stormtrooper without his helmet, never seen that in the movies!"...

Personally, I'm getting a little tired of gay characters being inserted into popular fiction just for the sake of having a gay character. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm completely fine with there being gay characters in movies and television - but too often it's done for attention (re: headlines) rather than because it's proper or serves the story.

Obviously I haven't read this novel yet, but in a story about Vader and the Emperor I have a hard time imagining why the sexuality of an Imperial Officer would even come up. It's not like there's ever been a need to establish that other Imperial officers were heterosexual. Unless this character's personal life is somehow relevant to the rest of the story (which based on what they've revealed about the plot seems unlikely), it appears that they've thrown it in just so they can say they have a gay character - which is actually rather patronizing.

Rey does kind of look bi / gay. She does have that tom boyish look about her and is also mechanic (yes I know stereotypical!) But Disney would not go near that story line in a million years........

Well, the point I wanted to bring with the thread is more, will we go beyond a timid single love story in the ST, starting with TFA, or we could see characters show a little more sexual desire to one another, whatever their sexual preference is.

The only thing we had for now is:

Padme and Anakin's love story in the PT.
A love triangle resolved with a kiss in the OT.

    :)

Will this time be again a love triangle? Multiple relationships? No love story at all?

Love triangles and multiple relationships could be fine. I'm kind of tending towards a preference of no love story, but at the same time I suppose it is somewhat natural for the trilogies to have at least one love interest.

I'd pull more for a well done version as was in the OT. Let's face it -- most of us Star Wars fans are fine with the love story, we even feel those little tingly thingies watching Han and Leia in ESB... but at the same time we're not into all the hot and heavy stuff like in the PT. AotC in particular.

Back when it was rumored that Zack Efron was up for the lead in Episode VII (that seems like a lifetime ago now), I was concerned it was a sign that Disney wanted to throw in a cheesy love story to appeal more to teenage girls. For me it's not about if there is romance, but how it's done. The way Star Wars is structured, romance isn't likely to ever dominate the storyline, but ESB proved that it can be used effectively to add emotional weight to the action. On the other hand, AotC showed how damaging it can be to the movie if done poorly.

Since Lucas isn't involved with TFA I'd probably more open to that sort of storyline, but my personal preference would be for them to wait until Episode VIII to get into it. Between re-establishing the state of the Star Wars Universe, introducing the new characters, mixing in the legacy characters, and setting up the story going forward - it seems to me they have enough to do without trying to work in a romantic subplot.

That said, if they can figure out a way to weave it into the story naturally, more power to them.

I wouldn't mind LGBT characters in the new films. But the again, this is due to my own sexuality. And why can't we have more LGBT characters in the mainstream? We exist in the real world!

As for romance, I'm betting there won't be anything until at least VIII. My money in on Rey/Finn (Though if either of them are revealed to not by straight, I will cackle madly on the theater).

While I'm not pro-LGBT I honestly wouldn't care if there were a LGBT character in Star Wars. All of my favorite TV shows have gay all over my TV screen so it doesn't really bother me anymore. But I don't see it happening on any cartoons or movies just in the novels and comics. I mean DC just made CatWoman (Batman villain) a bi-sexual, so it wouldn't surprise me if Marvel went and made Lando bi-sexual in a comic but not seen on screen.

Well in the upcoming EU they will have LGBT characters, and maybe they do it , but more in an ambigous manner like the Jack Sparrow Character in Curse of the carribean. But: I wouldnt expect Disney to have the balls on doing that with the newBig3, when you see how they handle Finn in the International trailer.

But in the overall, Star wars made it big without having a huge focus on love and sexuality.

If they have LGBT type characters then I want it to be normalized. Making a point of someone being LGBT in the film does more harm then good, it needs to be treated like a normal relationship. Like "Hi I'm one of your main characters and before I save the world let me give significant other a quick peck"

Right! It shouldn't be like this, "Hi I'm Bryon Skywalker and I'm GAY!" while he whips out his rainbow lightsaber.

Well, as long as they don't make it a major focus I wouldn't mind it. I personally like it when characters are more sexually ambiguous, but that's just because I'm really a "romance" guy.

That being said, I completely expect some relationship/love drama between the characters. While I'm fairly certain that won't be a gay or lesbian relationship, I wouldn't oppose one being included. As long as the romance plot points are subtle and not "hey look society! We care about equality! Aren't we so cool?" then I'll be good. They need to make it flow naturally with the plot, so the more subtle and out of the way the romance plot points are (this goes for both gay and straight relationships), the more pleased I will be.

Disney has a $4 billion investment in Star Wars to recoup. It's highly unlikely they would risk the controversy that would surround making one of the main characters in their new trilogy outwardly gay. At most they might have a Dumbledore type situation, where a character is gay but it's never brought up. Down the line, maybe. But not right off the bat.

They're opting for some gender and race diversity in TFA - I'd be shocked if they tried to do more than that at this stage.

I think Disney is going to just be happy with the idea of a black hero for Star Wars, they're too scared for an LGBT character

But I mean hey Legend of Korra gave us the romance we wanted, it's a dawning of a new age
