I was watching the Special Edition of ANH the other night and I was shocked by how bad the CG effects have aged. Granted, I've known they were bad for quite some time, but I always seem to blissfully forget that a while after watching. In particular, the CG Storm Troopers that were added into the Tattooine sequences stick out like a sore thumb(they seriously take me right out of the movie).

Here's the thing, I, like a great many other SW fans, would ultimately prefer having the option to watch the original theatrical cuts of the films. The realist in me knows that getting an official release of the original cuts is probably a long way off at this point(although hope springs eternal). Another issue is the fact that the Special Editions of the films are considered the "canon" versions by the LucasFilm Story Group, so that's another barrier to getting the original cuts as well.

Seeing as how getting what we really want(the original theatrical cuts of the films) is seemingly so far off at this point, I suggest a compromise. I would love to see LucasFilm spruce up the terrible looking CG in the Special Editions. We already know that George had been doing this somewhat himself with his incremental updates. Take the CG Jabba scene in ANH for instance. The original addition had dated graphics, although they weren't horrible for the time, but they aged incredibly poorly. Thankfully George saw fit to update Jabba's look for later releases of the Special Editions. See the image for proof.

    JabbaComparison.jpg

Now, as I've said before, I would prefer to have this sequence removed altogether, but if it has to stay in the film, then I'll take the updated Jabba every time. Even though he still doesn't look like the Jabba in RotJ, he still looks loads better than the first version.

If LucasFilm can do that for Jabba, I see no reason why they can't spruce up the CG in other areas of the Special Editions. It would certainly make them more tolerable to watch if we weren't constantly reminded that the effects were done in the 90s.

What do you guys think? Barring the most favorable outcome, that being an official release of the original theatrical cuts, would you at least like to see the CG effects updated in the Special Editions?

Absolutely, and some stuff could be fixed. It would look better if Lucasfilm just pretended Jabba had no tail when Han walks behind him, and considering that Han doesn't shoot first, could a motion-capture reference Han edit work so it doesn't look like he has a Giraffe neck? Any changes would have to approved by Lucas though, as modifications to his films would be stipulated in the contract somewhere :).

The only CGI I have a problem with the SE OT is Jabba but because it's the one scene I highly doubt it will be fixed any time soon unless a 40th anniversary edition is surprisingly released next year

Absolutely. Take CGI Jabba the Hutt from The Phantom Menace for example, even he looks better then the 2004/11/Digital Release Version.

    image.jpg

There's also a couple shots during the Darth Vader and Luke The Empire Strikes Back Fight where Vader's lightsaber is orange.

These shots, among others need fixing.

It would be nice if they went back and fixed it. It looked bad then and worse now. Han's finger penetrating Jabba and the stormtrooper jumping down from the Dewback, etc. They did fix a couple of things with the SE but the one shot that has irked me the most, and it is petty, is when Luke is exiting the Wampa cave. You can hear his lightsaber extinguish but you can see that it is still lit. I just don't know how they missed that.

I never understood the lightsaber problem; the blade FX were redone like three times. Surely, they would have been fixed by now.

I never got the Lightsaber issue either. We also see the blade of Luke's Lightsaber change color multiple times in ANH, and it's very noticeable. The only thing I can think is that it must be more complicated/costly to fix than we realize, that, or maybe George likes color changing Lightsabers ;).

What about LFL, Disney and us fans forget about the SE and get the focus in the Original Not Modified Films that we grew up watching? I'm still waiting for a decent release of the OT in blu ray.

I'd be all for updating the SE, as long as they release the historical original releases as well. There's a lot to be said for seeing the movies as they were originally made, so there's real value there. But there's also something to be said about George's vision of modernizing the originals... so why not make it an ongoing project?

Oh, that's what I want most, but if we are stuck with the Special Editions in the meantime, we might as well improve them and remove as much of the cringe worthy dated effects as we can.

Um, I don't know if I want to go back and look at this scene again or not...

They should have just cut to one of Jabba's thugs or something when Han turned to walk around Jabba.

Yeah, I always thought about doing that in my own edit. Lucasfilm could do the same :).

I think they should take a look at what Adywan did with his version of the SEs, and I think they should take notes.

On a similar note, I wouldn't mind seeing some updated matting on Padmés ships, and the Clone troopers in AotC.
Keep Jar Jar ugly, so we'll never forget..

While I generally agree, I highly doubt that Lucasfilm/Disney would touch anything George did even if it poorly aged. And, waiting for cleaned up original release is not likely, especially if George made that a stipulation in the contract (I don't know that he did, I'm just speculating). But, as I always like to say, the best available option is despecialized editions. They are really good, done by fans with love and free (never buy them! It goes against amazing fans and LFL.)

It was mainly the color correction that was fixed .
