Doesn’t Fox still hold the distribution rights? I doubt Lucasfilm/Disney would ever invest any capital into something that would so disproportionately profit another studio.

But it's okay, thankfully I have the 3 originals on some ancient and well-worn VHS tapes.

Fox have the physical distribution rights until 2020, however they have both the digital and physical for ANH forever.

True. Lucasfilm sold the ANH distribution rights to 20CF in return for all merchandise rights. Disney only bought rights to make new films and use Lucasfilm trademarks. 20CF essentially owns ANH forever.
I wonder if thats why The Force Awakens was made? A Disney version of A New Hope ?!?!

One of the wisest business decisions ever made.

I think that Disney could certainly work out a good business deal with Fox though regardless, seeing as how it would be mutually beneficial.

It’s basic ‘return on investment’. Funding a VFX refresh would cost millions of dollars. To make the expense worthwhile they’d need the confidence of not only recouping that capital but also turning a profit. That would be very hard to secure when another company holds the keys and would definitely want a cut of their own. Disney wouldn’t spend that money so long as Fox is in a position to dictate terms.

Sony’s ‘visitation’ deal with Marvel has set a pretty substantial precedence in the industry though. So I guess nothing’s truly impossible - just highly improbable :)

well then how come TBS can still show ANH along with the rest of the movies...an the other stipulation was for all of the sequel rights given to Lucas..

Death to all those tampering! Give us the real unaltered original trilogy back, with its flaws but also its consistency and nostalgic feel. What would you say if we modify ET with better CGI, or improve 1938 Robin Hoods battle scenes ??? Even with the limitations of the days, the wires, matte paintings, models and so on, the movies were great. And as you said, the modifications were either now dated (bad CGI), made the movies unbalanced, or even worse destroyed the tone or meanings (Solo shooting in self defence, Luke shouting Nooo before jumping, etc.) So just undo the changes, please Mr Lucas !!!! That hasn't been around since the 2004 DVD release. It's a 1997 exclusive change.

Consider that as time goes by though, what can be done with special effects gets cheaper and cheaper. We may yet reach a time when the changes can be done relatively cheaply, thus allowing for a profitable deal between the companies. Stranger things have happened ;).

Yep Alex you're perfectly right, that's a relief, but I merely mentioned it to illustrate my dislikes of any changes ! (Even if some are much less harmful or noticeable). Still there are horrible stuff left like young Hayden Christensen ghost at the end of ROTJ and that kind of weird ideas...

The Hayden Christensen force ghost is probably the single worst change Lucas made after the initial theater releases of the Special Editions. It's not the worst change in RotJ, that honor still goes to the awful music video sequence that George forced into the Jabba's Palace sequence, but it's probably more insulting due to the replacement of an actual actor.

After seeing Rogue One, I would love if they did a CGi recreation of the Tantive IV when it gets hit by the blast from the SD in ANH.....it still looks pretty dated. :(

I am all for beneficial improvements, but why......did they change Boba's voice so drastically? Temurra Morrison went full on Jango, AS Boba. I understand he turned out to be a clone, but it gave him more of an individual IDENTITY to us. Jason Wingreen was the true voice of Fett. I know that his vocal chords would be identical to Jango's but you couldn't find a voice median between the two to at least make him sound like a little of both???? The disrespect towards Fett never seems to end.

Now that RO is out, I'd love to see another "Special Edition" that uses the unaltered versions as a base.
I'd definitely buy a version with RO level cgi that does not feature Han shooting second, the Jabba scene, Jedi Rocks and the like.

Since I prefer to watch the Special Editions over the original versions, I say that Lucasfilm should leave them alone.

Doesn't change the fact that there's room for improvement.

REALLY, I hope they actually take that up. They would have to consult with George though.

I'm sure that so long as it's minor stuff like removing that Bronto in front of the screen, and cutting away when Han walks around Jabba, he'd approve. He's also always up for graphical upgrades where required.

There's room for imprpovement of all the movies - regardless of whether they are "special edition" or not. And if your idea of "improvements" is to simply restore the old version, then this post doesn't make any sense to me. This whole thread strikes me as nothing more than another attempt to bash Lucas. That's what it seems to be about to me.
