I think The special editions are awesome. I completely disagree with the fan hysteria against them. Except for a two changes (ie Han shot first and that awful dance scene in Return of The Jedi) I've always loved the DVD edition of the OT the graphics look so good. But what do I know I grew up with the prequels LOL.

Why do you always do this? Interpret anyone's legitimate criticism as Lucas bashing, and rush off to give them a neutral or negative rating. This thread is in no way "Lucas bashing".

Secondly, I never once said restore the old version. You're allowing bias to cloud your judgement. I'm clearly stating that the Special Editions can be improved.

Agreed. The 90s/00s effects haven’t aged terrifically well just as Lucas himself recognized the 70s/80s effects hadn’t before. What’s the harm in acknowledging that and wanting them updated?

Luckily I own a set of the 2006 Limited Edition DVD's, that not only include the SE's, but also the theatrical versions, remastered yet unaltered!!
That means: fresh colours and optimized clarity and sharpness, but no CGI enhancements!

Though I personally have no problems with the SE's as they are, I like the idea of starting with a clean slate, use the remastered versions, include the Jabba-scene, but approaching it from a fresh perspective! They could use the later additions as a guide-line, just make it feel more natural and 'dirty'!:p

Oh, and leave the Han - Greedo shooting as originally intended!!:D

I think it showed Lucas wanted this to be a true kids series at that point.
Compassion was him returning to save Luke's bacon

But at that moment in time, Han was just a hardassed, selfish, smuggling, nerfherding scoundrel!

I'm not sure, the OT aren't really 'kidsmovies' are they? I don't know what their rating is in the States, but I'm from Europe and here they are classified as 'suitable for 12 years and older!

I think it is more likely they thought they needed to clarify that Han was a "good guy"! Cause if he shot first, how can he be the good guy, because (according to the archetypal rules about movie/story-characters) he who shoots first is usually a badguy! And since he was also arrogant, greedy and cynical, this would (character-wise) cement him as a badguy!

Besides, the first time they changed it wasn't that bad, but the last time was more of a knee-jerk move, or should I say a 'Head-jerk' move!:p

By a very loose definition, sure they are all kids movies as in there is nothing egregiously inappropriate for little ones.

Han wasn't a good guy, he was a morally grey character who needed to become good in the end. It's called a character arc. Making him shoot first takes away the arc and actually weakens the character.

This is something that if Disney had done with a character would be reviled as them being "too Disney and too kid friendly #notmyStarWars" and all that bogus junk.

    Exactly!

"Watch your mouth kid, or y'r gonna find yourself floating home!" isn't really something a 'goodguy' would say...

    I don't know the 'U'-rating!

Where I come from, we just use the numbers that relate to a certain minimum age: all ages, 6,12,16 and 18+! (though 18+ is usually reserved for 'Adult'-movies!)
They use it in several European countries, including France.
So I suspect the 'U'-rating is stricktly UK!

They are pretty strickt with language!
I remember seeing the UK-version of 'Coming to America' where Eddie Murphy's character wakes up, opens the window and yell's: "Goodmorning America!"
Then you hear someone yell: "F*ck you!" and he says, still smiling broadly: "F*ck you too!"
In the UK-version f*ck is replaced by screw! (I do believe voiced by Murphy himself!)
