The ST was always going to be about the new characters so any addition of the OT characters is gravy to me.

As for the reuniting of all of the OT characters, just watch the end of ROTJ and you'll appreciate that scene even more. I have said since the announcement of the ST that nothing in this Trilogy can change how I view the OT.

So far I like where they are taking the ST with the OT characters. Han was great in TFA, Luke looks to be great in TLJ and Leia will probably get a proper sendoff in TLJ.

Star Wars has always been a work in process as Lucas has always changed things movie to movie so i try to not look big picture too much as you have to enjoy the movies individually in that respect.

That's a good point about Lando and the lightsaber. All of a sudden, I'm shocked they didn't do that! As for imitation actors, well...yes and no, that's how I feel about this. ;) See, I used to think that there were lots of good Vader-imitation voices, but after Rebels and Rogue One got James Earl Jones back, I realized that - to me anyway - he truly is one-of-a-kind. Jones' Vader has more personality than the imitation Vaders, which tend to only hone in on one aspect of Jones' style. But yes, some day, Vader's voice will need to be replaced, so I'm not saying you're wrong.

That's a reasonable point: people die. You're right. But to the Billy Dee Williams point, that's the thing. I don't think he would need to be crammed in. The developers of Rogue One talked about the way Tarkin was necessary, because, if he weren't there, you'd be wondering where he was. I feel the same way about the absence of Lando in The Force Awakens. He had made himself an important part of the Rebellion by Episode VI, and in my opinion would have made more sense than Admiral Ackbar, who we saw a couple times.

I agree with you. That would be a reasonable use of Lando and wouldn't feel shoe-horned in. I wouldn't be surprised if BDW cameos in the Han Solo movie. Maybe they're saving him for that.

I agree. It's very possible that he's rubbed Lucasfilm the wrong way. I don't think age is the reason, though, because the late Eric Bauersfield voiced Ackbar in TFA, at the ripe old age of 93. BDW is only 80.

I don't understand this. Is this supposed to be an argument to prevent Billy Dee Williams from appearing in any ST films? Exactly how are Lando and Maz Kanata connected?

And if Max von Sydow can make an appearance, why not Williams?

    I don't think it's needed.

I suspect that Mark was setting up fan expectation for TLJ. They will have a flashback scene with Solo, likely with Han asking Luke to either train is son or not to kill him, that there is still good in him. Flashback!

But you're absolutely right, it should have been made a priority that the old cast get screen time together. I actually think Ep 7-9 should have been about Luke, with Rey and company being the introduction to the world characters. Then 10-12 would be the kids stories with little if any OT. But they wanted to move on, and my guess it will depriv us of the OT characters. It's one of many disappointments I have about Episode 7 story, right up there with almost zero Luke (after saying this was the story of Luke Skywalker, or J.J. getting to decide what happens to Luke, after 30 years I didn't want to wait another 1.5 to see him in action) and the story of yet another super weapon that gets destroyed by a rag tag group of fighters with little to zero training together.

Hopefully Arian Johnson recognizes that fans wants to see the OT stars together.

Sorry, you don't think what's needed? Lando? More concern about this stuff?

The view of the OP is sympathetic, but such concern should never interfere with the production of narrative. They filmmakers and storytellers would be immensely restricted if they would have to take into account that this or that person might possibly die. These people, who play the characters you love, are real people with real lives. Star Wars is just a part of their lives, why press gang them into Star Wars? For our enjoyment?

Well, as I said initially, does this really matter? No, these are ultimately just movies. And I am thankful that we have what we have; and I recognize that the story, as the powers that be want to tell it, is the primary concern for Lucasfilm.

Yes, same question, @MarsPhoenix. I didn't think to ask it earlier. How are you saying Maz fills in for Lando, exactly?

Disney could very well put in a clause that says "get regular blood pressure check ups, preventive care, eat well until filming of Ep. 9 is over." That'd hardly be revolutionary. They seemed to have cared about Carries weight.

I think fans have every right to feel disappointed when movies don't meet their expectations. I'm fine with that. I just don't know why other fans get bent up over hearing them. It's a forum, it's a discussion, it's why they're here.

Fan expectation is normal, they watch the movies.

Many of these people's lives have been made by Starwars and their connection goes beyond the movies. Fans do have a right to want to see them sent off properly and not in some rushed way. If Disney didn't make contingent plans for Carrie, what will her send off be. Likely not what it should be.

But it is not out of the question for Disney to film contingent scenes, ones that could be used in case of a untimely demise of a star character. Probably should do these with all major characters.

The concern, they can't always monitor the cast's lifestyle all the time to say, keep yourself alive incase we need your character on screen.

They can film death scenes and pay for and demand personal chefs and regular medical checkups. I don't believe itsva horrible idea.

I agree with you that filming death scenes might actually be smart, but I imagine Lucasfilm and co. wouldn't want to do that as it could seem quite tactless. "Hey, listen, we all know you're up there in age, so how 'bout we film a scene of you dying before you go?"

I just don't see such a thing going over very well. Unless the actor were to volunteer such an idea.

I don't know, don't TV shows do this with older actors? I'm not entirely sure. It's seems logical to me. If Mark would have died after the filming of Ep. 7, the entire ST is tainted for good. How'd they explain the last scene of Ep. 7. And fan dissatisfaction would be very high. At least with some on screen time archived they could put something together. Disney would be insane to not put Luke in Ep 7 and have zero contingents to make sure Mark can be used in Ep. 8.

It may not be good form, but I don't believe it's a bad idea.

What would you feel and think when a company which employs you as an actor, decides to film contingency scenes..........in case you die prematurely? Fortunately, fans have no claim on Star Wars narrative whatsoever, no rights at all. Individual fans can participate in the creative prosess, that's fine and often instrumental, but as a collective, rather not.

LFL seems more prepared for planning ahead than ever before. The Story Group and KK are already thinking of the story 3-4 years ahead of us.

So I'm sure if they'll know if they need to sign actors up years in advance.

That is a very fair point about Hamill in TFA. If he had died (thank God he didn't!), Episode VIII would have made no sense (or they would have had to recast). Either way, it would have made for a really ugly situation. I definitely think the idea of keeping and archiving footage would be a smart move; maybe not death scenes, but enough that they could work with it if things don't go according to plan.

I think I heard once that George Lucas talked about having James Earl Jones record a "word library." I'm not sure where I heard that, but depending on if he were willing and if it doesn't disturb people on an ethical level, something like that might actually be beneficial for the industry.

This happened on The Sopranos TV Show

****SPOILERS AHEAD For Anyone who hasn't seen The Sopranos *****

The whole show was based on Tony and his relationship with his mother. When the actor who played his mother (Nancy Marchand) died in real life between Seasons 2 and 3 they had to take the show in a whole new direction. Honestly the show was never the same after that as it was good but not as great as the first 2 seasons because it lost that son/mother dynamic.

I guess my point is you just can't prepare for a death in the cast even when the actor is older. I honestly don't know what they would have done if God forbid Hamill died before Episode 8 was shot? But then you see a young actor like Paul Walker die tragically so you can't prepare for every actor possibly dying either?
