SPECULATION Luke’s darkness in TLJ

    So we know we aren’t going to get a complete “good” Luke as they’ve been heavily advertising some darkness too. How dark of a Luke are we going to see? Could that be part of the surprises to come? I never bought into the Luke=Snoke theories but at this point I think some sort of connection is definitely possible. And with the trailer telling us this is not going to go the way we think, I think we’re in for darker turns than we expect.

    He won't be dark. He is scared and desperated. It's a difference.

    I think Luke's line here could show us a flashback of Ren and the KOR. It fits the setting.

    Deceptions, hopeless, and probably fear. We can see in his face now. But I dont think we will see Luke turning to the dark side.

    I agree there’s absolutely no shot for Luke to ever be a full out villain but maybe he could be more of a antihero. I don’t think him just being scared and hopeless would be why they’re building him up so mysteriously. I don’t think we’ll ever see him as evil, but something’s up imo

    I think training Rey will rebuild his sense of hope. But I think grey Luke is a possibility. Would love to see him use force lightening.

    I'm definitely with the majority on this, but will paraphrase for the sake of refining my own perspective regarding this potential "darkness" in Luke:

    He's not going "dark", nor is he going to be dark, but he'll clearly be "darker" than he was in the original trilogy. I'm sure most would agree that his blatantly dark experiences will certainly have darkened him somewhat. ...Having said that- it'll be interesting to see where he goes from there!

    As others have mentioned, (dark or not), -I'd LOVE to see a flash of Luke emerge (briefly) displaying an "unleashed flurry of Jedi hellfire" upon a multitude of baddies. ...However for the most part, I prefer him to be wary, calm and collected.

    Luke being a villain would be one of the things that would make me get up and leave the theater, but I also don't see that happening. I think he's just having a crisis of faith and understandably so....I'd be pretty upset too if I watched my entire life's work go up in flames thanks to my nephew. We'll see a depressed and hopeless Luke but we won't be seeing an evil Luke.

    Yoda, Vader, Ben and Palpatine predicted Lukes fall to the Darkside throughout the OT.

    Go watch the movies and listen. He may well Rule the galaxy.

    Guys keep in mind that darkness doesn't necessarily mean turning to the dark side. Obviously Luke's purpose in the story isn't for him to be a villain so he won't be going around claiming the galaxy for himself or calling himself a sith. The only way darkness could apply to him (plot wise) is if he does or has previously done something that we wouldn't consider moral. Something OT Luke wouldn't/didn't do. I have no clue how the darkness could apply: it could be related to burning of the jedi temple, have something to do with Rey/her parents, or something so out of left field that we'd have no way of knowing until actually seeing the movie. My money is on the last one.

    Quite a few in this thread have said it far more eloquently than I am able to. "Dark" will only be as far as he's got a new understanding of the Force and it doesn't toe the line of everything that the Jedi Order said was best for Jedi.

    My sentiments in a nutshell. Luke clearly lost everything from Ben and went to Ach-too for answers. Which begs the question: assuming he's been there for quite a while why was Luke so hesitant? I mean yeah, he feels guilty and perhaps cynical, but knowing Rian Johnson, there has to be a reason beyond. And I suspect the reason might have to due with what Luke discovered in the First Jedi Temple?

    This is hypothetical, but what if Luke discovers in the journals something that made him question the Jedi? Perhaps, a misinterpretation of how the Jedi should have operated. That would make sense, considering the PT and how dogmatic/cultist the Jedi were. But also, it could tie into the current trilogy as in yeah, even if Luke would be willing to re-enter the battle and defeat Snoke/ Kylo, what would be the point?

    Especially, if any new Jedi he trained would be doomed to repeat the same mistakes. Hence, the whole "The Jedi must end comment".

    I wouldn't mind seeing Luke turning "dark"... I know that most of the fans won't really like this, but I will. Why not? It's in his bloodline after all and Yoda had warned him... Judging by the trailer (and also by the official posters) that might as well be the case... Again, all these thoughts are coming from the promotional material... there's definitely something else going in there, remember the TFA trailer with all these Jedi references when they were showing us Fin? As for the posters, Luke has the "Vader spot" on those... interesting... Many thoughts... I won't say more, in case I'm correct!

    May the force etc...

    Actually it is plausible. Harrison got his wish for Han to die. Mark always wanted Luke to be a baddy. I'm not sure how I would take it but if it happens it happens. Would be a different twist to his story. Will it happen? not sure.
