I think the scene has a few purposes.

    1. Luke showing Rey that "he's really serious about this". He's not on this island having a good time, he's doing a lot of things... weird things in order to get nutrients to stay alive.

    2. To show Rey that this is what she's gonna have to do if she stays here. Almost like an attempt to scare her off. I like how Rey's reaction is pretty similar to what the audience's is, at least pertaining to my theater. Of course this is my interpretation, the Falcon could be stacked with supplies for all I know but considering Chewie cooked up a porg, I think it's fair to say the Falcon didn't much in the way of food/drink on it.

-The creature was mostly a physical prop, not CGI.
-The scene did have a purpose

And btw, THIS is what a sloth looks like:

So we're on page 3 of a thread about... nothing. Strange nobody got offended by a giant pig's butt in TFA but we're discussing the origin and purpose of milk. Move along.

The first two sentences of point 2 of this post are the winners and answer the OP's concerns succinctly so I would say that this thread can and should be closed.

I thought the scene was fine. Odd...but fine.

Also, I will go see the movie again. Even though the online trolls have directed me to hate it.....I rebel.

I will give American currency to a guy/girl in a theater to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi again. I will!!

Rey clearly couldn't stay for a cuppa. Luke had to adapt to the same hospitality Yoda provided. Root leaf stew not exactly appetising but it made do.

I have no problem with that scene. It's very Star Wars. It shows that Luke has decided to live a farmer life on Ach-To. Milking cows and fishing. It lasts a couple of seconds and Mark Hamill's face when he takes a sip of that disgusting milk is priceless. It's not aimed to make people laugh... its purpose is to show how disconnected Luke is from his Jedi Life. I don't have a problem with it at all. It's not falling in the Jar Jar stepping on poop territory, where the scene's only purpose was to get cheap laughs.

    False equivalency.
Milk is a common food and nutritional source for most humans outside of those with allergies.
Dung is not. That would be a cheap ploy to get giggles out of 12 year olds.

Luke showing that he has all but renounced his former ways by living what he sees as a pure and modest life is a necessary thing to show where he is at this late stage in his life.

Personally I loved it. Luke has the crazy, cynical old wizard thing down to a Tee. It also reminded me of Yoda for some reason and made me smile. It was really funny and endearing.

honestly though, in light of the complete nonstory that took place in the movie, that milking scene didn't even bother me. Its whatever, he lives on some planet with weird creatures that he drinks from.

What is the difference between that scene and Yoda beating the crap out of R2 for a flashlight in ESB? Or him tasting Luke's sausage?

That was not a training scene. It was a survival scene. Showing how he lives

Don’t know about you but I thought that scene was magic, harkens back to Yoda and his own isolated quirkiness. If Luke Skywalker milking an alien is going to ruin a movie for you? I’m sorry?

I actually liked it. It was quirky and silly and interesting to see how salty old Luke gets down

Star Wars is not Silence of the Lambs. There's always been lots of dumb humor, especially concerning the funky creatures we see, and that's ok

Was it really only 3 days? I remember everyone, including myself, practically cringed at that moment. :p.
