Now that we've seen the new trailer I'm more convinced than ever that it was Luke that left Rey on Jakku.

Luke obviously has found the flaws of the Jedi Order and after his failure in the new academy and his nephew, Ben, he has tried to stop the cycle by hiding Rey and hiding until the Jedi are no more. If you think about it, there is always a chance for a Jedi to become a Sith, but not the other way around (Anakin being the exception as the chosen one). The lust for power will always be there, so without anyone to train the force users there is far less likely the chance that there will be frequent threats such as Anakin or Ben.

I also believe this is ALL about the prophecy and Rey being another 'Chosen One'. Luke knows this cycle will never break until the 'One' is not found or dead...

This will bring jealousy and conflict with Ben wanting so badly to be the all powerful, but he knows deep down Rey is that person. This will also bring conflict between Rey and Luke at the end of Episode 8 and Rey will probably ditch everyone to seek her own destiny thus leaving us with a cliff hanger for 9. :)

    What do y'all think?

Luke was still training Ben until 6 years before TFA, which would make Rey 13 at the time and she was left on Jakku around age 5 so the timing isn't right for this.

I have a strong feeling that Rey being on Jakku is going to be linked in some way to Lor San Tekka. He's obviously an important character(despite TFA absolutely wasting him. Seriously, it is Max Von Sydow. That is almost as bad as wasting Christopher Lee-Oh :) ) given his affiliation with the church of the Force and having been with Luke.

If anything, I could see Tekka having been there to keep an eye on Rey or at the very least to give her the coordinates of the map to locate Luke(because, seriously if the map isn't explained in TLJ I'll be so irritated). As for why Rey is on Jakku, maybe it was Tekka's decision as opposed to Luke?

Rey was on Jakku for at least 10 years before Ben betrayed Luke Skywalker.
It's not wise to draw conclusions from a single line in a teaser trailer. It's also a line (if it makes it in the film) that occurs in the first act.

Maybe this is what turned Ben against Luke? Luke's unorthodox way of training and keeping secrets from his apprentices such as 'The Chosen One', 'Prophecy' and that Luke hid Rey away knowing that she could be a threat if she fell into Snoke's hands. He took Rey to hiding and wiped her memory when he started sensing and having visions that Ben would indeed turn to the dark side.

Luke may change a lot in this trilogy, in the sense that he becomes disillusioned, bitter or even dark. But I doubt LucasFilm will make him out to be the sort of dude who leaves a child alone on a hostile planet, with Unkar Plutt, to a lifetime of glorified slavery.

The audience would never swallow that pill.

Lor San Tekka has been travelling the world and only retired to Jakku after Luke went into exile. So the argument that Luke left her in his care wouldn't work.

Not necessarily. As a story writer Rey needs a reason to have conflict on which side to choose. This would be the perfect reason being Luke IS sacrificing the 'Right thing to do' for the sake of the universe and to END the Jedi. This doesn't mean he's evil. It just proves more that he has lost faith in the Jedi religion and is trying to course correct his and Kenobi's/ Anakin's mistakes.

We accepted that Obi-Wan did not tell Luke the truth for similar reasons. Strong force users are no doubt threats to the universe and Luke has both fallen victim to this and been responsible as well. 'The Jedi must end' he says. Are those not words from someone that means it?

Also, we've heard Mark Hamill literally say he 'fundamentally disagrees' with the way the writers have portrayed Luke in the sequels..Maybe because of the reasons you have brought up?

There are things an audience will forgive and there are things an audience won't forgive. Children are VERY touchy topics and the endangerment of a child by an adult is almost never forgivable. LucasFilm won't gamble with their star like that. Making Luke Skywalker a person who abandoned a child for the dead is something I don't see happening anytime soon.

The difference is that Luke was placed with a loving family- his aunt and uncle. He was fed, clothed and cared for. Luke wasn't going to die anytime soon. So Obi-Wan's lie is easily forgiven. His agenda is accepted and no one thinks twice about it.

Rey, on the other hand, should have almost certainly died. From Rey's survival guide you can tell just how hard she struggled to eke out an existence on Jakku. Besides, Unkar Plutt is heavily hinted to be abusive.

Not a good look for LucasFilm or Luke if they decide to go that route.

you actually mean to tell me Luke (and Leia) didn't for see Ben turning before he even came close? I think Luke already had visions of all of this which is why Leia and he did everything they could to keep it from happening, but Luke found that there was nothing he could do. This is why he was responsible for hiding Rey. I've read all of the books and It's not impossible even with the timeline working against my theory.

love this post. and just want to add that the theme of abandonment is very heavy in the ST (including in the EU), and the neglect/abuse of children is being demonstrated to us time and again as the cause of all this discomfiture in the galaxy.

almost all of our characters have abandonment/neglect/abuse as part of their psychological make up.
almost all of them were taken from their families in some way and we're seeing the end result of those tragically fractured families.

we've already got our OT heroes embroiled in the emotional basketcase of one of those children.
it's doubtful they will double-down on this as it may not serve the narrative throughline.

I'm telling you Rey was on Jakku long before Ben betrayed Luke.

To be fair it's ludicrous that Luke/Leia would drop a 5 year old child off on a desert planet because they were afraid of a 15 year old boy.

If it were unintentional to leave her there though.. To make sure she didn't fall into Snoke's hands would be #1 priority

I think some scavengers took Rey from San Tekka and traded her to Platt for the ship you see leaving. I think Luke left her with Tekka to protect her from Snoke while he was doing his research in the force.

Perhaps Rey's Mom even hid Rey from Luke...

In the movie they keep talking about Jakku is an absolute dump. I mean repeatedly. For a movie that is otherwise pretty economical with the dialogue, that repetition is... off.

Then we find out about the Battle of Jakku.
And how Palpatine was interested in this dump of a planet in the far western reaches.

I believe that Jakku is the key to Rey's history- where it is, what's on it and more importantly, what happened on it.

This is more what I meant. That Luke was somehow responsible for Rey being on Jakku, but not the soul source to why she was abandoned.

But how could Luke fail as the Jedi Order did if what he was doing was something new and totally different? The Luke we saw back in the original trilogy did things very differently from the way the Jedi of the prequels did so I have to think that when he failed, he did so trying to do his own thing and not because he failed as the Jedi Order did.

I meant in his humble eyes he failed. It's obvious nobody else blames him

After reading the final part of Aftermath and thinking about it more, I think:
    1. Is it possible Luke took her too Jakku? - absolutely yes. The question is "Why Jaskku". I think the same reason Palpatine had Rax setup the observatory on Jakku. The mysterious power at the planets core is - I believe - the answer. I think it blocks force users ability to see anyone/anything on that planet. Essentially Jakku is a blind-spot to force users - making Rey invisible. The obvious question I can't answer is how would Rey's parents and/or Luke know that?

    2. On Luke being Rey's father. It's possible. But - an this will be somewhat taboo - I don't think he would have had a relationship with her mother. Luke truly is the embodiment of the Jedi code. He is selfless and does not get attached. After the battle of Yavin, his one goal was to restore the Jedi Order. Having a kid may have seemed a logical step being how strong with the force his offspring would be.

    3. She is not Han and Leia's kid. The look Han gave her in the MF when she said "I never knew there was this much green in the whole ?universe?"(I think it is "universe"), Is one of recognition, but not one of a father to a daughter IMO. He knew who she is, but he's not her father ... Luke might be.
