I've been wondering this after watching TFA a few times now and I'm not sure if I can give an answer myself.

Would you like to see Luke kicking ass in Episode VIII, performing stunts, having cool lighsaber battles, doing all sorts of Force staff, like lets say Yoda in the PT, or would you preffer a more Ben Kenobi in ANH type? A background mentor who's physical abilities have diminished and all he can do is pass his knowledge to Rey...

I'd like to see Luke pulling some moves à la Count Dooku actually. I found his fighting style to be quite elegant and in my opinion, would fit with an older Luke as his fighting style. If Ep. 8 goes the way I want (which will propably don't) It'll have Luke as a mentor training Rey, then joining her in a quest to dispatch the Knights of Ren (I'm guessing they are Luke's former pupils and will be the new threat of Ep. 8) with awesome Master/Apprentice team up moves.

I agree both, we saw Luke almost take the darkside path in TROTJ, I'm sure fans would want him to sample it then Leia brings him back to the light or even Rey for that matter.

I would like to see him kick ass, however, the bigger badass he is, the less it makes sense that he is in hiding. The early rumors of he has gone mad were intriguing, perhaps he is mad, and we just don't know that yet. And Rey can convince him to get his act together. Or maybe he'll pull a yoda, and be all crazy until....

Sorry, off topic. Mentor. With all the PC in the world, I don't really wanna see an old man and a woman kick the hell out of the evil white guy and save the Galaxy.

I'm a huge fan of Kill Bill: Volumes I and II, and if you've ever seen the films, you'll recall that there's an ancient and reclusive Kung-Fu master (Pai Mei) who takes on apprentices (from time to time, and only if they meet his standards). He lives in the middle of nowhere, and the individual seeking his council and educational oversight has to climb an incredibly steep set of stairs in order to reach him.

I've included a link to the relevant part of the films below, and you'll see that, though he is a "monk" (read: mentor), Pai Mei is still very much a bad-ass.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not saying I want Luke to be abusive and abrasive (Pai Mei is definitely NOT warm and cuddly, and I think if Luke did half the stuff Pai Mei did, the movie would get an R-rating) but I wouldn't be surprised to see Rey test her light saber skills against his, which would show the audience not just how Rey has honed her skills, but also how advanced (and awesome) Luke's skills have become in 30 years.

    Neither badass or mentor.
Complete and utter 'Ben Gunn' nutjob crazy. Why? 14 years alone on an island and no boat to reach the nearest Irish pub. ;)

I'd like to think that Luke is still capable of grabbing a lightsaber and taking care of buisness and that's what I want to see. His power level should match his experiences, which we no little of since he became a Jedi at the end of ROTJ. For those of us who read Shattered Empire issue 4, we know that he is more skilled at combat than he was in the original trilogy, as he trashes an imperial labratory. He has clearly had the time to practice his hand to hand combat, but how much more skilled is he with the force? Has he been in touch with any force ghosts, and if so, has he undergone the training to become one? I'm guessing we will see him showcase at least one force abality we haven't seen yet.

Powerful, but wise. Just like Obi-Wan in RotS. Jedi who can do mindblowing things with the Force - but nothing truly spectacular yet silly like jumping 50 meters etc. I'd like to see him doing stuff like Kylo (freezing, making unconscious like in RotJ) but more powerful. He also should be skilled in lightsaber combat but not extremely good at it like old Jedi because I bet he wasn't practising much. He should beat Kylo every time.

I would prefer Luke be a calm mentor throughout the majority of the film, but able to pull out some moves when the time comes. Not flashy like Yoda or the other PT stuff, but enough to do what needs to be done.

Heck, what if he doesn't even carry a lightsaber anymore because he no longer needs one? That would be kind of cool.

I think he isn't even going to want to train Rey for a great portion of the film. So I guess neither.

I think we have Luke's arc and role already defined.

His role is to bring back the Jedi.

And this doesn't mean just training one and going off. This means rebuilding the Order again.

    Snoke tells us this much.

Luke has found the First Jedi Temple. I'm guessing this is probably going to be his command post. He trains Jedi here and is keeper of the Temple, if you will. It's survival is as important as the survival of the Jedi itself, most likely. He sends other Jedi out to do missions. His existence as a teacher is vital.

Luke won't throw down until he has to. I'm betting it will be darned impressive if he does. But he has more important things to worry about.
