Mark Hamill follows Rian Johnson on Twitter ... for what it's worth.

Even if Luke dies in VII he can still come back as a force ghost, so there's really no reason for him to not at least show up in VIII and IX

I think if luke dies, he will die in a naturel way just like yoda.
Would be stupid if he dies because of a sith.

In a way, that idea in of itself would cheapen an unnatural death for Luke which is part of why I think Luke lives till the end of 9. There isn't as much to lose in killing off a character like Luke when you know he and Hamill can easily come back as a ghost in the next episode. Betting that Luke lives till the very end of IX.

This is true. No matter what happens to Luke I'm sure he will be in all 3 films of the new trilogy \m/

I like the idea of Luke's story arc mirroring that of Yoda, and him dieing of natural causes at the end of IX.

I like that too but Luke is nowhere near as old as Yoda.

That will depend on what period of time is covered by the ST. I figure that Luke will be about 55 at the start of TFA, if the ST spans only a few years like the OT, than you would be correct, but if it spans 15+ years like the PT, than Luke would be near the end of a normal human lifespan by the end. I dont see any situation where Luke lives to be 800+ years old like Yoda.

I was just thinking the trilogy would be pretty close together as in time like the OT.

I hope he doesn't die until IX but if he does get killed off it better be by just a natural yoda death type deal. If Luke Skywalker...one of the most known characters in sci fi history gets killed off in the first film by some character Abrams /Disney came up with like 10 months ago I'm walking out.

I think the BIG deal will be if Luke LIVES until the end scene of IX, or even DO NOT DIE, BUT ALMOST DIE. (and live to train the new jedi order after his exile??) This will surprise the audience much more than he becoming a force ghost, or just a mirror obi-wan's fate or yoda's fate. Will be like a copy of the Original triology. They want to make something NEW. I think they will put him in a "Role-Gandalf-Wannabe" suporting the new protagonists. It will be simply the most powerful moneymaker Lucasfilm will have. Imagine the surprise about discovers he lives, or maybe die in the end scene of the whole saga. It would be AWESOME

I think based on what disney, lucas film wants. A new trilogy that tastes old and new at the same time. The emotional aspect of the original trilogy plus a new and modern story. Copy the Original Trilogy and makes him a Force ghost will be boring. Maybe tranform him in a Gandalf-Like-Role will be much better. But in a "star wars way", making we feel the young luke in there without take the focus on the new protagonists. I think the great surprises will be luke death ONLY in the final scene of the saga, making the audience cry after the victory of the light. OR maybe surprising everyone , puting him in a ALMOST DEATH situation and showing that he LIVES ON, and will train the new JEDI ORDER (maybe in bad phisical conditions) in the END SCENE AS WELL. Disney will fill their asses with money and make a lot of fans cry if they done this.

I dig the Gandalf route. I personally think Luke is the first to simply become one with the Force, like Anakin Solo, as a nod to the EU, in Episode 8. After all, exile or not, it seems like the "Force has awakened", so if the ST takes its time like the PT, he could just have an awesome practical+CGI death to accent his rise as one of the greatest Jedi of all time after he has successfully created a new Jedi Order or has become freed from exile and has given enough training to the posterity of the Jedi. A Force ghost is a possibility, but he can't just talk and guide like Obi-Wan, Luke roles more in the way of do and do it his way with heart and originality. He freaking convinces himself to fight his father for a second time and to die with the Second Death Star from the Rebellion's attack on it, that takes a lot of daring I haven;t seen from any other Jedi. Well, actually, except Anakin :D

Luke already thought of Jedi as wizards. Even in the interviews back inthe 70's and 80's he talks about Merlin, excalibur and so on. So I think if Luke comes back as an older character he is already predisposed to be coming very Gandalf like. Remember though Obi-Was as already a character like that. They just killed him off in case it was just one movie. Rather than bring him back they kept as a ghost and sent Luke to find Yoda an even more wizardy guy.

Incidentally in the 60's when Tolkien first sold the rights to LOTR they were looking at Alec Guiness to play Gandalf.

Luke was always my favorite character and I always saw the OT as his story. IMO he'll be an integral part of the ST. He is the most powerful Jedi, after all.

Well thats what the novels say he will pass way & appear to Cade Skywalker as a force ghost but Disney could change If it was I would prefer him to go out in a lightsaber duel it's a family tradition

As I stated in the "Han and Episode VIII" thread, I think that the possibility exists that we'll lose Han, but that happening (theoretically) would set a stage that could involve the whole Skywalker/Solo family being "in your face" confronted with the moral light/dark battle within themselves and being able to see the difference despite their feelings. I'd see Luke blaming himself for the tragedy while teaching the kids a valuable lesson as they watch him wrestle with it.....setting up the kids to carry on the saga...learning the jedi lesson that their grandfather failed and was redeemed too late, ultimately. We'll see luke through E7 and at least mostly through E8...I'm certain of it.

I hope Luke plays a part for all three movies, maybe less in EP7 (as that is what some rumors claim) Then more in EP 8, where he spends a lot of time really training his padawan (1 or 2). And then in EP 9 he gets to just transcend into the Force, Yoda style.

I have a good feeling Han's gonna die, no matter how sad it'll be. His time has come. Give him his "Big F***ing Hero" moment, blazes of glory style.
And maybe Leia gets murdered in EP 8? Idk :p
